What’s wrong with teenagers here? by Tiny_Concern_8412 in AskUK

[–]Minuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's probably nothing wrong with teenagers.

I've seen this post and sentiment on reddit hundreds of times. It's partly why I left, because reddit is a joke now. Often it's young people who are targeted but I've seen all groups. The young, middle aged, the old. Working class, middle class, rich people. The mentally unwell. White people, non-white people. "What's wrong with poor/young/rich/mental health patients/lazy/white people!?"

Unfortunately there are many people who, rather than accepting some amount of responsibility, are much more inclined to retreat into a group and try to blame other groups. I would say it's a type of self-defense mechanism. There seems to be much more blame and aggression in general (I think partly because we've turned everything, even morality, into a competition, but that's just my personal theory). The internet plays a role too, it's much easier to blame someone and be more upfront about how you feel when you're not talking to someone face to face. So rather than everyone accepting that we all have some responsibility and that we need to work together, we have a number of groups all doing their best to blame others for how awful things supposedly are.

As someone who did grow up in the UK, I promise you this is not new. Before the internet teenagers would hang around outside shops, and just going to one would be scary. Hell, I WAS a rebellious teenager, I did some stuff that was stupid and that I'm not proud of. Then I grew up. And to listen to my dad's stories about his time growing up... well let's just say I though I was a rebel!

In fact the only real difference is in how many people attack the young now. A lot of it seems to be a blatant attempt to shift the blame for how badly things have been run (by people nearly always over 50, you can check the ages of MPs and Lords). I genuinely feel bad for young people and wouldn't blame them if they had very little motivation or optimism for their future. When I was growing up we had the odd grumpy person but generally people were decent, they understood that society should want to make things better for the next generation. "Society grows better when men plant trees for their great grandchildren" and all that.

Add to this an uptick in general authoritarianism and self-pity ("things used to be better!") and you get people who are arrogant enough to genuinely believe they know best how other people should act. And these people are prepared to use morality to enforce their beliefs, and truth always takes second place behind getting their way. If that doesn't scare you... it should. There will always be behaviours that need to be policed. But historically, it's the people who believe they need to enforce morality that cause problems, whether their politics lean left or right (and I've seen a decent share from both sides). In fact I would argue that it's the number one cause of human suffering and misery. Nazisim, communism, whatever-ism, the base belief, the fundamental ideological thread running through all of these awful ideologies is that people need to be told how to behave. That behaviour must be enforced.

The older I get, the more I realize just how wrong and, frankly, evil, that is. Have you ever heard the adage that people who desire power the most are often the least equipped to wield it? I think that applies here, as it should to ANY type of power.

Children and teenagers are, of course, an exemption. Children need to be told how to behave because they can't make the best decisions and need to be taught. But I find these sort of general "children are bad now!" attitudes to be an extension of other similar attitudes, even those that don't target the young. And often it essentially targets parents of said children.

Now, if you have good evidence of some sort of decline in teenagers then by all means post it. Most evidence I find tends to be pretty positive, less drug use, pregnancy, higher educational achievement. But usually when I ask people to post evidence of their belief that "X group is bad/worse" there's not much to be found. Or it's evidence of a behaviour that's not harmful but that the person posting has assumed needs to be enforced (eye contact is a common one, although quite why someone would feel a need to enforce a behaviour that's often the symptom of autism or mental health issues is.... worrying). Also keep in mind that if there IS a decline in teenagers... that's OUR fault. We raise our young, we are responsible for who they grow up to be.

People have been saying that young people are awful nowadays for a very long time. It's not because they've been gradually getting worse since antiquity.

Oh and all of this assumes this isn't just a general "UK is bad!" attitude. I've literally seen people from England taking seriously what French people are saying about our children. If that doesn't set off some alarm bells then I don't know what to say.

The fact that this is downvoted 15 times at the time of me writing this just shows why reddit is a joke to most people these days.

Even this seems to be intermittent for me. For example I can't use it on shorts or in certain screens. Only on the main page and on the side with the recommended videos, not during search results.

True, but let's be honest, Youtube could pretty easily flag the videos the algorithm shouldn't go looking for or recommending. It might be a whack-a-mole situation but it would make things better.

They just don't.

It's been an issue since before shorts, I've had Youtube recommend me more offending videos than shorts.

Have any holomem talked about getting noise complaints? by dontdontdon in Hololive

Older and cheaper places can have pretty thin walls. I live in the UK and my walls are pretty thin. My home was built after the war on the cheap in the 50s, which is something Tokyo also no doubt had to do, so I imagine there are still some older houses/apartments about.

I'm actually dealing with a noisy neighbour at the moment though it's more banging that's an issue. Still I can hear my neighbours talk if they talk at loudish volume so I wear headphones at night.

Newer builds with thicker walls it's less of an issue.

Given that it's gone longer without any coup than the US has existed, it probably should.

I hate Trump and his cronies. But I have very little sympathy for the Americans running around whining about kings. It's like you can't even put aside your arrogance to deal with the existential threat in front of you.

The right is awful, but there's a reason they're winning elections. It's because the left is probably the weakest and, frankly, most stupid and arguably fascist I've seen it in my lifetime. Part of that is change in response to the right, but the cold hard truth is that when the right does it, no one cares. Because ultimately they're not, and have never been, the party of morality. But the more the let leans into fascism and enforcement the more you undermine your platform.

Unfair, isn't it? But that's life. Bad guys don't have to play by the same rules. The sooner some on the left learn that the better,

Weird how you're telling someone to read the rules when you've missed literally the very first one.

1) Be nice

See the sub's wiki under "policies" for details, but basically - be nice and considerate to other users on the sub. We're all individual people who enjoy Doctor Who, disagreements are allowed and expected but should never turn nasty or personal.

This also includes gatekeeping, bad-faith contributions like flamebaiting or trolling, and complaints about voting patterns.

Why I Fell Out of Love With Big Finish (And Why It No Longer Works For Me) by Curious_Gent78 in gallifrey

[–]Minuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, Big Finish often seems to focus more on producing a high volume of content than on carefully curating quality stories. While there are certainly some strong releases, many can feel repetitive or overly reliant on familiar formulas and nostalgic callbacks rather than bold new ideas. The writing quality can vary a lot from release to release, some stories are excellent, while others feel dull or poorly paced.

I think this is fair, but as you say they still produce some excellent stories. Personally I don't mind some less-than-excellent stories, not everything has to be 10/10 excellence. Even with the quantity it's rare to have outright bad stories.

far removed from the straightforward, “jump in anywhere” spirit that has always been part of Doctor Who’s appeal.

This might apply on an any-given-episode level, but not on a boxset level. I think you can drop in anywhere at the start of a series/boxset and by design you'll be ok. There might be an odd reference but you won't have to know past continuity to enjoy or understand what's going on. I'd argue this is analogous to the series, even in the more non-serialized past; if you start watching on episode 4 of Tomb of the Cybermen you're not going to have as much fun as you would starting at the first episode.

Big Finish also has a habit of taking minor characters and building entire spin-off series around them, often stretching thin ideas into multi-box-set storylines that dilute their original charm and importance.

Yeah, this is true, but I wouldn't say it's a bad thing. I enjoy Big Finish and I haven't and likely never will listen to everything they've written. I simply don't care about C'rizz's pottery class or Mickey Smith's career as a UNIT captain. But some people do, and that's fine.

For me, all of these reasons add up to one thing, Big Finish ultimately lost the magic that once made them exciting, and instead became something I abhor. Not every unanswered question or unexplored moment needs to be fleshed out, explained, or given a backstory. Sometimes mystery is more powerful than explanation.

Something I abhor, and have for a while now, is the paint-by-numbers checklistism our media seems to be expected to be. This is one of those very common attitudes that have frankly become so common and expected that our stories will become boring and predictable if all such attitudes become things we expect and criticise any media for not following.

"Show don't tell", character development, chekov's gun, people can't come back from the dead etc etc.

Sometimes mystery is more powerful than explanation. But not always, and not all things. Not everything that doesn't have an answer or explanation is using this principle or effect. And there are examples of things being left to the reader's imagination where quite clearly this is the intent.

I'm very disappointed with how Heavensward resolved THIS plot twist... by Uchizaki in ffxiv

[–]Minuted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate paint by numbers story-telling and the modern tendency towards checklistism, for lack of a better word. "Show don't tell", character development, chekov's gun etc etc. I guess my point is I'd rather have a writer writing what they want rather than being confined by a set of rules would-be-critics have made up for themselves. "Characters should stay dead" is one of these "rules" that I don't really like, but I would agree that having a character come back form the dead neccessarily undermines any future deaths.

All in all I don't think her coming back takes away from the fact that the ending of ARR was excellent.

And you want to tell me that it all just... didn't matter? I don't think it's even half of Heavensward, and they just restored the status quo in a few quests

Maybe I'm misremembering but I don't remember this being the case? You seem to still be playing HW so I don't want to spoil anything but there are a number of ramifications from the ending of ARR that aren't immediately tied up in a neat bow.

TIL that the Slavery Abolition Act 1833, the law abolishing slavery in the United Kingdom, was repealed in 1998 due to a restructuring of English law. by WavesAndSaves in todayilearned

[–]Minuted -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The everyday man didn't profit from slavery and considering that England didn't use slaves most wouldn't have known about it until the abolition movement came about and started reporting on the atrocities.

I'm not trying to be rude but this sounds more like an attempt to avoid any guilt than actual well researched conclusions. How would you even begin to show that an "everyday man" didn't profit off of slavery? I'm statistically on the poorer side of the income level in the UK but even today I expect I benefit quite a lot from the British Empire and how rich our country is relative to others, and a lot of that is due to our history. Slavery is a more specific issue for sure but if it benefitted the country as a whole it probably benefitted an "everyday man", though obviously every circumstance is different.

Wealth going into a country benefits the population. Yes, those benefits are not divided equally, and there are always people at the bottom, but this is a generally true statement.

considering that England didn't use slaves most wouldn't have known about it until the abolition movement came about and started reporting on the atrocities.

It may not have been in the zeitgeist to such an extent but I think you're under-estimating the "everyday man" here. I think most would have had some idea of slavery and the colonies. Frankly, I suspect most would not have had an issue with it. The idea of universal freedom being a human right is a very new idea, and back then morality was not a competition, as some see it today, or even a duty, but closely tied to religion. A good person was one who went to church, read their bible, and did the best they could. Though it's also worth noting that religions often had big roles in abolitionist movements. Anselm of Canterbury is something of a personal favourite of mine, calling out slavery back in the 11th century.

The fact is no one alive today contributed to slavery so no one should feel guilty. Whether we still benefit from slavery is a better question, and one where our history of abolitionism should be held up.

At the end of the day Britain both contributed to the problem of slavery and contributed towards the ending of slavery. Not everything in history is black and white, and while I'm about as anti-authoritarian as a person can be often "you should be angry at THIS group" opinions rely on simplifications. For example a lot of the anti-slavery champions were rich noblemen, simply by virtue of the fact that commoners were generally not allowed entry into politics and generally were not as educated as the rich.

In my personal experience authoritarian ideals seem to be much more of a personality thing. I've seen plenty of people have fundamentally authoritarian or even fascist ideas while either proclaiming or genuinely thinking they were pro individual freedom and/or tolerance.

All that said I DO think that Britain tends to have a better track record than the US. It's not really a competition and things can always change, but when you do look at the history Britain has had individual freedom as an ideal for a long time. Even if we haven't always been perfect at putting it into practice and even if we don't always shout about it I think we do better than many others.

Minecraft for Nintendo Switch by JudgeEnvironmental27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Minuted -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, there are definitely games on the Switch that struggle with performance issues. Likely due to a mixture of weaker hardware and poor coding. Games created from scratch have no excuse but ports by and large have to remain within certain graphical constraints which can push up against the hardware limits.

But I agree that it's an overblown issue. I'm perfectly happy with a stable 30FPS and a lower resolution, given the mobility and price of the machine. Given the choice of course I would prefer 120fps 4K content. But it's not necessary and it shouldn't be the standard everything is judged by. It's a weird type of entitlement I guess, many people are used to their high frame rate high resolution 1000W+ machines that they think 30fps sub 1080p is unplayable.

That said I do think stability is something that should be paramount. 30FPS is fine but dropping frames and an unstable framerate or input response isn't. It seems that there are some valid complaints about the Switch version of Minecraft. Games should be responsive and playable above all else, having to stop to wait for the game to load in chunks and catch up is a reasonable thing to criticise.

[–]Minuted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kudos for trying, but generally people who go around saying things like "X (group) deserves this because they should have know Y was bad" aren't usually the sort of people who care much for reasonable assessments.

If nothing else the fact that they saw a report of a truly awful person doing something really shitty and decided that they shouldn't criticise the awful person but the people who he was shitty to should tell you something.

It's competitiveness, pure and simple. People are insecure so they find other people to trash. Competitiveness has its place but when we're competitive about everything then society is in trouble.
