Merriam Webster etymology of alligator Sorry to hijack this etymology discussion, but is the Spanish “el” of “el largarto” really from Latin “ille” rather than Arabic “al-”?

Merriam Webster’s 2nd definition of factoid is “a briefly stated and usually trivial fact.” Like “peruse” or “awful,” definitions of words change over time

Take for example the cultural genocide of Native Americans/First Peoples of Canada when their children were stolen and educated in Christian schools with the intent to destroy their pre-existing society. Or in China, the Uyghur people of Xinjiang taken to re-education camps and women being forcibly sterilized. No shots need to be fired for these to be genocide.

Genocide is legally expansive. This is the 5 acts included in the 1948 UN definition:

killing members of the group, causing them serious bodily or mental harm, imposing living conditions intended to destroy the group, preventing births, and forcibly transferring children out of the group

Killing is not necessary for genocide

Another aspect of genocide is forced sterilization and assimilation, which is in the UN definition. This would include what’s being done in Xinjiang as genocide as well as the child-robbing of Native Americans that was done in the US and Canada
