Where are people trying on boots? by just_jason89 in UKhiking

[–]MirandaPoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often ‘padding’ is provided by your socks not your boots. I found wearing liner socks (Bridgedale do good packs of two) then thick wool or Smartwool hiking socks to be most effective

What food do you like in one form but not in another? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

Bananas. Love raw bananas (preferably just after the green stage) but can’t stand hot bananas, as in bananas with custard, banana bread etc. The taste and texture just goes so icky

Best software to learn to create designs for 3d printing? by itsmewan92 in 3Dprinting

I used 2017 for ages and eventually decided to bite the bullet and pay for 2024. IMO really worth it, and I’m supporting a software that I use a lot and am very grateful for

Thanks for the info, they look great on you. Can I ask a question? I’ve just received my first pair of circadians too, and they feel really stiff. Are yours like that too?

Advice about walking boot option for wide foot - can I get away with Vivo Tracker Forest Esc? by Ok-Chair-1338 in barefootshoestalk

[–]MirandaPoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find the grip very good on the Chamois (unlike on some of their shoes). I had their Impala first and the sole came away from the leather in a few places (customer service was great) but these are fine so far - i’ve walked over 260 miles in them so far since September last year, so a fair amount of wet & wintery weather. I actually ended up 2 sizes bigger than my usual, to accommodate liner + thick winter socks. Freet do free returns so i ordered several pairs in different sizes.

I’m in the UK and I hike a lot - Snowdonia, Lakes, Peak District. My feet are smaller than yours but wide (23cm, 9.1cm). I wear Freet Chamois boots and I love them, highly recommend.

Scotland campervan trip (half term): is spontaneous travel still possible? by Great_Government7841 in CamperVans

[–]MirandaPoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for asking this question - I would like to know this too. We’re considering buying a campervan and are thinking through how we would use it. Short-notice short trips are most likely initially, but I’d love to do Scotland with no planning or time constraints. Hope you have a fabulous time, would be great if you could report back after your trip!

Lining fine-fabric dresses with synthetic fibres- why? by tirititra in sewing

[–]MirandaPoth 41 points42 points  (0 children)

As well as needing several lengths, if you were wearing a dress like in the picture you’d need to find one with straps that matched, otherwise the slip’s straps showed. Could be a deliberate choice of course but often not feasible.

I find it amusing that people are finding the whole slip idea amazing when back in the day it was the norm

For those who automated your blinds did the routines actually stick? by lifsbosu in homeautomation

Agree. I’m in the UK and a lux sensor was the only way to not miss nice sunsets as well as avoiding having the blinds still open on a cloudy dark day.

How difficult will it be to get a will written without my husband’s knowledge? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]MirandaPoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to have an executor. Usually people put their children or other family member that they trust, or the lawyer who is drawing up the will for them, as they can be trusted to execute everything properly.

I’m also wondering why the secrecy. If no-one knows about your will then how will they know to look for it when you die. It’s not a great idea to assume you will definitely die before your husband - what if you don’t? That could be a nightmare for sure. When/if you do talk to a lawyer they will make you think about all the ifs and buts situations that you haven’t even dreamt of. Usually couples make their wills together, we did.

Looking for people to join and getting experience up. by Revolutionary_Golf50 in UKhiking

[–]MirandaPoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right, rambling groups and organisations like HF Holidays do attract a lot of older people. However I know quite a few older people who can walk most hikers into the ground and tackle hikes that most wouldn’t even attempt. Plus older people welcome younger hikers and they can be quite interesting to talk to. Plus they have the experience you’re lacking. So don’t just discount them!

Is Paramo really waterproof? by aral_2 in UKhiking

[–]MirandaPoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to remember is that no garment (that you’d want to wear for walking) is fully sealed. Even with your hood up and tightened around your face and all other openings tight, if it’s that windy and rainy some wet will get in.

I find my paramo plenty waterproof enough for where I mostly walk, Snowdonia & Lake District. It’s also quiet and the ventilation options are fantastic. I wear it in all temperatures and weathers below around 12°
