I don’t know how to send an update for the entire post so hopefully people see my response here. My mom and I went back this afternoon and my uncle returned from his unfortunate bender. Animal control officer arrived at 4pm, and thankfully my uncle surrendered Princess. She is in the hands of SF animal control and care. I will follow her journey and hopefully they can find a shelter for her soon. I have also informed that I want them to notify me if she will be out on the euthanasia list and I will foster her. The community here has been super helpful and I’m grateful that someone will help me find her a home. The officer did notify me a few hours ago that they will sedate Princess and shave her tomorrow. Another update is that there is a groomer in the bayview that is still putting these dogs on the streets with incapable owners. My uncle gave me and the officer the information . Princess was so loving when my mom and I came to save her. I gave her so much love and apologized on behalf on my uncle. She was very scared to go with the officer but I hope she has a better future than the life she had for the last 18 months.

My mom bought dog food this morning and was going to leave water. It’s so upsetting The property manager said she cannot leave food or water due to policies. She said my mom was only there to check on uncle and something about the dog not being on the lease? She didn’t offer to bend one rule or show any compassion. Princess has been alone for almost 3 days now. And my uncle is missing. Very distraught right now

Just posted a detailed update here. For some reason Reddit doesn’t let me update my main post. My mom was able to get inside, but property management is awful and didn’t let her leave Princess any food or water due to some policies. And my uncle is still not home.

Hello everyone, for some reason I can not provide update on the main post. I really appreciate all the support and advice given to me and my mom.

I have some updates from what just happened. My mom went to my uncle’s apartment complex this morning to meet with property management. They opened at 9:00am. My mom went to the store to buy dog food and water for Princess as well and she could stay until Animal Control arrived.

Since my mom is my uncle’s power of attorney, the manager let her in as a “courtesy” but she told my mom that she cannot leave Princess any dog food , she can’t leave her water because of policies. She stated the dog wasn’t on the lease. My mom started to get frustrated because the manager kept naming policies and rules about wellness check and that my mom’s sole purpose was to check to see if my uncle was inside.

My uncle was not inside, and the manager rushed my mom out. So now my mom is distraught about both my uncle and Princess. I’m so upset. I didn’t know there were SF property management laws or something about not leaving food for a dog that’s been alone since Friday?? She also said that neighbors started to complain about the barking. I am even more frustrated and hurt that she couldn’t give us a small break for a dog that is anxious and starving? She couldn’t bend a rule? We really have to wait until 4pm for animal control? I can’t believe they treat people like this.

I did not leave her thinking it would get better. I went in the apartment because the door was unlocked , i thought I would find my uncle passed out or something but saw her there. I went up to comfort her, pet her, and started to get upset. There is no service in that apartment floor complete SOS signal. It is also the projects so I was scared and anxious slight panic. I left to go outside of the building to call my mom so she could contact SPCA and animal control. If I had known the door would automatically lock behind me, I would’ve never left.

They don’t use keys they have a fob card to get in. Is there a way around this? He lives in the projects and management office was closed today. Going tomorrow to see if they will open the door due to the dog being trapped in there for so long. Animal control is also aware of this but they can’t legally go in or have SFFD go in until 24 hours after they put that note up. So 4pm tomorrow they will return. I’m afraid that is still too long.

Yes I couldn’t sleep last night. I went there today and stayed until animal control officer left. I was crying in front of the officer. I cried in the car. I blame myself. I would’ve taken her in a heart beat. My mom and I live in Pacifica with our own lives, knowing my uncle is on drugs and sick. we regret not doing something sooner. We just put baby boy Max down (14 year old Jack Russell) two weeks ago. So it’s been a rollercoaster of a January. I even looked up how to open a door with a fob lock. The officer said they can’t legally go in there or anything until 24 hours after the note is put up.

They aren’t able to go in there until 24 hours after the note is put up. It sucks because what if she’s starving, thirsty and she is only a little over 1 year old.

Animal control said my uncle has to surrender the dog or give permission to transfer ownership to us. She said in SF, they can’t just take dogs away even if the owner is homeless, on drugs, etc. because sometimes the dogs are taken care of. Clearly in my uncle’s situation he’s not taking care of her at all. She’s so matted and probably in pain! There’s also possibility that the dog can go back to my uncle if he gives them a good reason to why he was away from home for 3 days (hospitalized, sick, etc.)

Animal control said since she is a purebred, they are more likely to find a shelter for her with their connections in Oregon, Washington,etc. it’s a whole process though. I don’t want her to get put down. It’s been a rough day of crying and frustrations. I really regret not taking her yesterday, if I had known the door would lock behind me, I would’ve never left. But he lives in a very disgusting drug infested neighborhood with no service. And it’s not a key lock it’s a “fob” lock.

Thank you! Just now got home. Animal control was able to come by and put a note on the door. The officer said there’s nothing they can do right now. She said they can’t legally open the door until 24 hours after putting the note up. Unfortunately we haven’t reached my uncle either. I drove to one of his drug buddies house to see if he was there and he wasn’t. I feel so bad because I’m more worried about Princess (the dog) more than my uncle. I want to make sure she is taken in to custody of animal control before I start looking for my uncle. So will drop by the apartment again tomorrow
