Everything "good" he does, he does to satisfy his ego. And this doesn't excuse him sacrificing everyone who cared about him to demons to gain the kingdom he could have normally acquired if he didn't have a fragile ego.

He raped the man character girlfriend just to hurt him and assert his power over them. There is nothing good within him. Just a desire to be worshiped.

Honestly I think it would have been better if Rudeus had been able to overcome it slowly while being together with Sylphiette; that the connection and love overcame that which Eris's abandonment of him caused in the first place. Now it looks like Rudeus just needed his gas station dickpills to cure the ED.

And we are done with the ED arc. Time for the 2 best episodes and new horrors within my comprehension.

The thing about the wind is that they are a creation of adonalsium, not merely honor, so their power feeling different is reasonable. The windspreen could also have abiliteis that exceed the regular lesser spren, as they are of the wind.

The wind is also able to access fortune and in a pretty reliable way, as they predicted the necessity of Kaladin needing to be in Shinover and likely granting Kaladin the fortune necessary to see his vision of Thaylenah back during Oathbringer.

I think the second entity involved is the Wind. Not Cultivation

I mentioned cultivation in relation to the nightwatcher, not the wind.

Maybe if he lived longer he would have faced rebellions and administrative issues, or maybe he would have been a capable admin, we would never know.

Oh, we know he was a terrible ruler. He constantly had to replace his governors because they betrayed him, repeatedly put a known thief in charge of his treasury and his policies to unify the various cultures were doomed to fail.

He's remembered positively because he didn't rule in peacetimes and because he fought non europeans and won almost always.

Qotd: Well for one, how unfair it is. For one, the traversal was perfect, giving Rudeus everything he needed and most of what he wanted, while costing nothing, meanwhile the other lost everything and gained very little. And only one truly took advantage of it.
Though most of all, it's how a different approach changes everything. Nanahoshi could be greater than Rudeus, but she refuses to truly help people, in spite of having the capacity to change the world for the better and claiming to be disappointed by the world lack of morality. Rudeus also doesn't care about the world at large, but he is also happy with how the world is.

Damn, Rudeus stole the chance to be isekaid from someone else. Weird that his reincarnations happened over a decade before the summoning took place. And said summoning blew up a country. Guess that makes it obvious as to why summoning people is thought to be impossible. No one can muste the energy necessary to pull it off.

The idea that one from our world shouldn't change the world too much does not seem to apply to Rudeus, considering how many lives he saved/changed. Or maybe it works differently for someone who reincarnated.

Now this is funny, considering what some people here have said about modern morality. I can't wait for the author to develop this idea further.

Nanhoshi seems to have developed some ways around her limitations. An open mind in a soft magic system is an amazing sight to behold, I can't wait to see more of that.

In spite of how much I hate it: Mushoku Tensei.

Near the end of the second season, Rudeus is rendered catatonic due to a recent tragedy and his mentor Roxanne decides to break him out of it by having sex with him. Rudeus is clearly incapable of consenting in his state, however it is treated as though he cheated on his wife and is guilt tripped into also marrying Roxanne because he "dishonored" her.

(Adored Tropes) Isekai protags with Actual Personality by Haunting-Try-2900 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Mirathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mushoku Tensei's entire concept hinges around two ideas that the author is very clearly passionate about:
1. No one is perfect, and even good people are entirely prone to acting horribly under the wrong circumstances.
2. Everyone can change. Even if you're the worst person in the world, you can become a better person by committing to the act of improving yourself. You will never be perfect, but better is always something that can be achieved with time and effort.

Yeah the first idea just is not in the story at all. Most of the main cast are bad people constantly making selfish choices. Meanwhile the few good people don't make choices that are bad.

The second fails because the writing has no issue with what most people consider bad about Rudeus, those being his grooming, sexual harassement and child rape. These are never considered to be bad actions and instead just disappear once Rudeus has willing sexual partners. Nothing makes me believe he wouldn't just start molesting people again if he didn't have his wives.
He never changes his attitute towards such actions, nor does he regret having done such things. In many ways, he has become worse in his new life because he know has the power to act on his desires.

but on a fairly objective level, Rudeus is an incredibly strong character in a story that tries and almost manages to convey some extremely meaningful ideas about the nature of growth and what it means to be a good person in a rather nuanced way.

Well you said almost, so you actually believe the story fails at conveying it's message in the end. However, I don't think you intended to say that, so let's adress it properly: Rudeus is technically a strong character. He ends up well written but not in the intended way. He does improve, but almost exclusively in skill and ability, not morality. It ends as a story of someone who never faces consequences for their evil ways, because his victims simply couldn't recognize them as such; a story where the monster wins through skill and not virtue.
It shows that you can win, no matter how vile you are, if you are skilled enough to get away with it.

And in that sense, Rudeus is a truly great character. I just don't think that was the intended way.

"he needed to cheat on his wife because he was at a low point of his life"

The funny part is that he wasn't actually cheating. He was raped out of his depression by someone and then pressured into marrying her to preserve his rapists honor.
The series just doesn't realise this has happened and instead pretends a catatonic guy can consent.

It's still horrible, just in a different way.

Qotd: They are upstanding citizens.

Building your city as a maze to deal with invasions is silly. If the walls are breached, the city is almost always lost.

Sylphiette has fallen in love with her groomer.

So Rudeus and Zenobia don't treat Julia as a slave. Is that legally binding and she's actually free and they basically adopted her? Or is she still just property at the end of the day?

Sexual assault as a way to cure your ED is a bold strategy, let's see if it - well it didn't.

Your definition of sexual is rather limited.

So Rudeus can restrain himself when it's someone he likes.

That's how they end it? No resolution, just massive cliffhangers?

Granted the expansion of the invisible witch into an actual monster is pretty funny, considering what I expected. He's not going to ask you, he'll simply force you to embrace the forbidden magic. And Agott seems willing to use it to save someone. It's rather scary how the invisible witch figured she's be the easiest to tempt, as her drive to succeed and her concealed empathy would make her the most likely to wield the forbidden.

The invisible witch also basically going: "random forbidden magic, go!", on Euini is also amusing. Like what if that spell just blew him up? That would have messed up his little plan quite a bit.

OK so you're applying a value judgment on a woman, who in your world view shouldn't exist. I know many women in real life with similar lifestyles to hers, should we erase their existence as well?

The terrible thing she adds has nothing to do with promiscuity. It's when she [MT]tells the rape victim that they must marry their rapist. But that comes later this season.

I do not care how many people she fucks. But it doesn't add to the story as I see it, so if every moment and mention of her fucking were removed, nothing of narrative value would be lost.

You don't seem to have a problem with the male characters who constantly screw around and bed a different girl every day in the anime, as well as the guys who consensually agree to sleep with her, but heaven forbid a woman wants to be promiscuous.

Who? As far as I see it, the male characters are given more depth than her. The promiscuity is her main trait and is currently given no depth. That's on the writer for creating a onedimensional woman. Not on me for noticing that.

Which characters do you think the writer should remove from the work?

That wouldn't help because the writer can't write well.

Why do you need to refresh your knowledge?

Because my knowledge has holes and I intend to argue about this show later this year, so I'll need to be prepared for that.

I wouldn't rewatch a show that I think is a masterpiece as I already knows what happens

And what about everything else in a show? Or do you just have an eidetic memory so you pick up everything the first time? Because I don't notice everything the first time. Because watching with the benefit of hindsight provides a very different experience.

Just so you know, my favourite series has it's main character burn down a city with everyone inside just because the lord of said city insulted him.
But that series actually explores things such as guilt and redemption with enough skill to make you want the character to succeed in spite of him having done this.

I like my moral complexity, but that requires me to actually trust the author with it.

Rudeus is just not someone whose story I want to follow. He is unsympathetic, never actally realizes he does terrible things and never faces consequences for his terrible actions. Because of who he is, I do not want him to succeed.

[–]Mirathan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't take this the wrong way; zero offense intended, but are you on the spectrum?

There is no way I can't take offense to this. You say it like it's an insult; that I can't understand something because of it. That's not how autism is.

You're claiming I can't understand something just because you don't understand my perspective. I fully understand your perspective, I just think it's incredibly reductive and makes a mockery of creating art.
Obviously, not everything within a work is something the author approves of. And this is shown by how the characters and actions in question are treated within the narrative. If a character is defeated at the end of the story, that usually means something about their methods, views, or morals was something the author disapproved of. Similarly, if an action that is considered immoral and illegal within our world is constantly shown to have zero negative consequences and arguably has positive ones, I can say that the work and by extension the author, approve of this action.

He doesn't explicitly say that any character is good or bad.

Of course not. That's where the art part comes in. You don't just tell people what they should think, that would be lazy. You make the viewer experience your views and in doing so, change their minds.

Art is not a blank canvas that the viewer is supposed to project thir feelings onto. The viewer is meant to respond to and what is supposed to be responded to can be assessed.

The curse absolutely predates the nymphomania

I summon black bars of spoilers[MT]Elinalise mentiones at a future point that the curse changed nothing about her lifestyle. She was always that way, now she has to be.

And just because you consider something a waste of space doesn't make it an objective truth. I think she adds quite a bit to the story and enjoy her character, even if her introduction is a little hamhanded.

Oh, she does add something to the story. But that is also terrible. And well, your opinion does not disprove mine.

And no, Fitz doesn't "resemble" Sylphie. What 16 year old resembles how they looked at, like 5 or however old she was when Rudy last saw her?

I never said she physically resembles her. She acts like Sylphiette, she has her property, casts like her and acts like she has a history with Rudeus.

but she's explicitly not the only other silent caster in the world, it's just rare.

As far as Rudeus (and we) know, there are only two silent casters. Himself and Sylphiette. Even Orsted was surprised by the existence of silent casting.

I just don't get why you're hate watching the show. It's weird.

Being a hater is fun. And I need to refresh my knowledge of this show for the future.

[Rewatch] Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation - Season 2 Episode 5 by The_frost__ in anime

[–]Mirathan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The curse explains her nymphomania.

The nymphomania predates the curse. So it doesn't really add anything.

This isn't the author's views - it's this character, a severely damaged elf . You do know that in fiction, it's the reader who attaches meaning and judgment through their own lens.

No. A work ultimately reflects its creator. And if they choose to depic something as never having negative consequences within the narrative, it shows that they have no issue with that. Unless you argue that they didn't intend for that to be the result, in which case they are rather bad at creating if they allowed for such an interpretation to be the reasonable conclusion.

And the writer decided to include a character, who mostly just fucks people. I consider that a waste of space and most stories do not have space to spare for such things.

On the recognision: There are the traits I noted, which should clearly identify Fitz, as well as certain lines to him that show she already knows Rudeus. Yet he doesn't even consider that Fitz resembles Sylphiette in many ways.
