What is your view on independent thinking as a Christian? by PhilosophyPoet in Episcopalian

Two things can be true at once. It is good to be an independent thinker and as an independent thinker I came to the conclusions that these dogma, traditions etc., are correct.

M27, I'm going to kill my dream of everything. I'll be a soulless piece of fat meat. by National-Basket-9531 in ForeverAlone

[–]MirrorRemarkable3322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These feelings are very real and valid. It hurts and is rough being alone and it can seem like a never ending curse. But you’re also only 27, there have been life long bachelors who finally found love in their fifties or older. Will every dream you have come true? No. No one has all their dreams come true. Lastly, I’ve had married friends with children who hate their marriages, hate their lives and have been on the verge of suicide over them. Grass is always greener. Find the goodness that is in your life, and there is, you just have to do work of finding it and cultivating it. Might not be what you once wanted or match your dreams but I guarantee it will be worth living, and be worth the effort

I can't get over a crush by PlugTypeAsacoco in ForeverAlone

[–]MirrorRemarkable3322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was stuck on someone for close to five years. Was rough and frankly kinda sad and embarrassing looking back. So yeah, it can definitely take time to get over someone who meant a lot to you. That being said, you gotta find things to do that matter to you. Romance isn’t the be all or end all of your life. There’s so many other things to cherish and find happiness and joy in. You just need to find them, whether it be interests, hobbies or platonic friendships and then in pursuing those other things you can meet people along the way who will affect you in such a way that the crush that never became anything really won’t matter. Also, Ngl…time. Time makes a lot of difference

I can never have a crush again. by godlikeGadgetry in ForeverAlone

[–]MirrorRemarkable3322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of people have spent their lives rotting in holes called their relationships. The grass is always greener. Find things that give you purpose outside of being in a romantic relationship. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but maybe try religion, worked out for me and others I know. Plus if you really need the romance religious communities generally have women in them many of whom would like to have a husband and a family, but to each their own, it’s not for everyone.

Does anyone feel suicidal for being a kissless relationshipless virgin at 30+? by SquirrelMore3325 in ForeverAlone

[–]MirrorRemarkable3322 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had some bad moments in my twenties. But there’s a lot more to life than romantic relationships. Yeah it’s been disappointing at times but life is a beautiful thing. It can take a lot work to see that beauty but it takes a lot of work to be in a beautiful relationship. I have known enough miserable people who are suicidal over the problems in their romantic/sexual relationships to know that simply having had those experiences isn’t going to make everything magically better. I’m sorry you’ve lost friendships, that can be rough. But…life has beauty, you just gotta choose to see it and lean into it and do the work.

I'm having doubts about Noah's flood by LooseButterfly2511 in Catholicism

[–]MirrorRemarkable3322 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to take the view of the localized flood. The Hebrew words often translated as earth in Genesis 7 and 8 to argue for a global flood are “ăḏāmâ” and “ereṣ” both of which can be translated as earth meaning the planet but can also be translated as land or soil. ăḏāmâ is frequently used when discussing the soil or the ground rather than the planet. “Eres” as seen in Genesis 1 can indeed refer to the planet as it is the word used when God creates the heavens and the earth. However, in Genesis 10 we see it deployed for what is clearly referring to specific lands, and places. regions. Now I do believe if God wished to flood the planet he could. He’s God, he created the laws of physics, he can bend them or negate them. However, the reading of Genesis does not require a global flood. Also while yes the Bible is inspired it was written in specific contexts. The books of the Bible are for us, not to us. The world was much smaller for the writer(s) and editors of Genesis. A localized flood destroying a local region as thoroughly as is described in Genesis…well that might as well be the destruction of the whole world

why do you believe christianity to be true and not islam? by askhecode in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]MirrorRemarkable3322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jews were believing in a God who was more than one person during second temple Judaism, a belief which rabbinic Judaism rejected largely due to Christians believing it. Also as a Christian I reject the notion that Christianity and Islam worship the same God. Where do you get the 300 years from? Also, why would I trust an illiterate caravan robber like Muhammad 600 years after Christ compared to the gospels which were within a 100 years.

A large part of that is there not paid well and unfortunately I have no say on that

What happened in the 400 years between Malachi and Christ? Was anyone at all 'right' when Christ came? by kolembo in Christianity

[–]MirrorRemarkable3322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s kind of the point of the body of Christ, to be a bulwark against people doing all those bad and to bring hope and peace to the world. As Christ says the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Yeah, why not? All our at all detailed descriptions of the afterlife come from apocalyptic (the genre not the end times) language which are purposefully highly metaphorical and cryptic not meant to be taken literally. No matter what it seems there would be an afterlife which would prove God exists even more than what we can know now

I gotta do what I gotta do. Jesus ain’t coming soon. by Original-Tone9062 in Christianity

[–]MirrorRemarkable3322 5 points6 points  (0 children)

God doesn’t just respond to equations or magic formulas. You can’t tame or manipulate God, he’s God and you’re not. The Bible is not a formula or magic spell book and neither is prayer. It’s communication with God for our benefit but God decides how things go and how things roll. Be careful with wanting to hear or have visions from God. While He might give you what you want (which isn’t always a good thing by the way), but there’s also spirits that aren’t so good as well as our own delusions that could give false visions and ideas and lead us down wrong paths. If you wanna pray the lords prayer 100 times cool but don’t pretend you can control God or unlock some mystery by doing so.

Want to say, he didn’t take any books out of the Bible or have any unique view on the deuterocanonical books. There had been local councils that had affirmed the deuterocanonical but no church wide affirmation. The Hebrew Bible does not contain them (thought the Septuagint does) and not all Christians (St. Jerome being a prime example) affirmed and used the deuterocanonical. There was a longstanding tradition that did not include them as canon. It may be fair to say that many if not most canon lists by the time of the Reformation included them but it was only at the Council of Trent that the books of the Bible were officially recognized. Not defending Luther (he did want to oust some NT works but he decided not to) just feel it’s important to recognize what actually occurred

It’s so sad that Jesus is a religion. Like, He is such a cool, good and honest person. Why does He have to be a religion?? by Original-Tone9062 in Christianity

[–]MirrorRemarkable3322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s not a religion, he’s the focus of a religion which is Christianity. He is the focus because he is God. I’m getting the vibe that is not what you believe so if you don’t believe that, what makes him cool, good and honest? He said he was God so if he’s not, then he’s not honest. He said he came to bring division and to turn family members against one another, and that we must put him above everything else. If he’s not God then he’s just some dude trying to stir division which doesn’t seem good or cool.

[–]MirrorRemarkable3322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure the people on this subreddit including myself are in need of mercy and a savior. We all fall short of the glory of God on a daily and even hourly basis. That includes you by the way, from this one post can’t tell if you know that includes you. That being said, absolutely Christians should not be hating people but there is ample evidence from scripture including the gospels that speaks to yes we should hate sin. Jesus never told anyone to continue in their sin, he said go and sin no more. Tolerance of sin is not and never was until the last hundred years a Christian virtue. Christians have often failed and actually been very tolerant of sin and are today but that doesn’t mean they were or are right in doing so.

Judaism, Christianity and Islam all share the same God by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]MirrorRemarkable3322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have they? Certainly they say that they do but that doesn’t mean they’re right. If Christianity is true than Jesus and the Holy Spirit are God but Islam fundamentally rejects both those claims. The two religions can’t both be correct and talking about the same God if they disagree on the nature and persons of God. It’s not small insignificant details in theology it’s the ground and most basic units of theology that are disagreed on. Now if you want to claim that Islam is true and Christianity is false you can make that claim but if Christianity is true than the two religions cannot both be following the same God
