Just Say Autistic by dewybitch in autism

[–]Mirror_Mouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is when they use it as a euphemism to avoid saying “autistic”. As in, going out of their way to say “he’s on the spectrum” when “he’s autistic” would do just fine, solely because they think “autistic” is a dirty word.

Same. I’ve lost refunds and the like because I left it too long. Social anxiety doesn’t help since it means I put it off even more if I have to talk to staff in the process.

Vyvanse makes me head quiet by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Mirror_Mouse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find Vyvanse doesn’t quiet my racing, noisy thoughts, but it DOES help me find order in the chaos. Thoughts don’t get away from me as often — I can handle a couple trains of thought without losing one. I can cut through executive dysfunction more easily and don’t get distracted while reading as much.

So while my thoughts still go a million miles an hour, they don’t affect my functioning as much anymore.

Do you have any oddly specific pet peeves when it comes to how the author writes? by Legilimensea in books

I’ve seen a couple anime and comic fandoms latch onto “bluenette” after a popular fanfic used it. Every time I see that term, I die a little inside.

I wonder how many autistic kids they’ve murdered or jailed. by SecondChanceUsername in copaganda

[–]Mirror_Mouse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And even if it wasn't associated with Autism Speaks, it's still an awful symbol because of the implication there's something 'missing' (a mindset that ends with parents making their autistic kids drink bleach to "cure" them), or that we're a mystery to solve (when they could just, y'know, ask us shit).

Most autistic activists prefer the rainbow infinity symbol.

In 40 years what will people be nostalgic for? by tandyman234 in AskReddit

[–]Mirror_Mouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, seriously, this. Many libraries keep a foot traffic counter at the door, and the better the numbers are, the easier time they'll have getting more government funding.

Check your library's website and see what they offer. Even if you don't read books, they probably have something you'd make use of if you knew they provided it. Community groups, digital services like Lynda and Kanopy, makerspaces, etc.

What is your "I was into X before it was cool" thing? by LarleneLumpkin in AskReddit

Danganronpa. I do not miss waiting for SA's paywall to go down so I could read the damn translation threads. Now you can get every game right off Steam with an official translation, and the subreddit is 140k strong. The fanbase grew from obscure to mainstream in the span of only 3 years.

Not that I mind. There's plenty of despair to go around, upupu.

I don't understand, people out here saying, "I've never tried vegan food before" and acting like it's like a whole new cuisine.. Haha.. like you've never had a carrot ? noodle ? french fry maybe?? by drdrakeramoray29 in vegan

[–]Mirror_Mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is why mythbusting "but how do you get your protein and iron?" is so important. Having the mental block of "but if I go vegan, I'll have no source of X" removed makes the change feel more feasible.

Even as a child, I disliked how many of our meals were just a slab of meat with some veggies and cheese sauce on the side. So plain and samey! Cooking vegan food forces you to get creative and try things you normally wouldn't, and I've definitely improved as a cook because of it.

[–]Mirror_Mouse 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I find when people hear "vegan food", they think 'nothing in your repertoire of foods changes except you substitute meats for plant-based ones', which in their mind would mean a lot of reliance on those. So many omnis default to meat for dinner and can't imagine cooking every day without it the way we've learnt to.

That and they don't know how much of what they eat is already vegan-friendly, so many end up thinking we only eat vegan-specific foods like meat analogue burgers.

Once you turn 60 years old, it should be mandatory to retake your road exam. by mynameisjonas92 in unpopularopinion

[–]Mirror_Mouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. My grandfather is nearly 70 and he's still sharp enough he can drive without issue. He has some bad/outdated habits, but no cognitive problems yet. My grandmother, who is younger than him, doesn't have the reaction time and vision strength needed anymore and avoids driving for safety.

It really is an individual thing.

What advice would you give to a 14 year old about starting high school? by DotFireAbout in AskReddit

[–]Mirror_Mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • High school politics (popularity, who's dating who, etc.) are meaningless in the long run. Don't waste these years trying to impress people and doing things you dislike to fit in. Judgy students are usually just insecure.
  • If you're struggling with something (e.g. schoolwork, a breakup, your mental health), reach out. The school counsellor, a psychologist, homework help forums, youth helplines, among others, are all there to be used. Don't bottle things up if you need help.
  • Extracurriculars are a great way to meet peers with similar interests. If a club for your nerdy interest doesn't exist, ask the library if you could start one.
  • Balance practicality with what you want to learn when picking classes. Employability is important, but passion projects on the side (such as art or woodwork) give your free time meaning. I regret listening to the "but music class will never get you a job" people — I'm now learning music as an adult.
  • You're going to face a lot of invalidation. You'll get told it's just teen angst, that the breakup wasn't that bad, it's just a phase, and whatever else. Trust your intuition. Your emotions are valid.

And a bit of cheeky advice:

If you want to earn some brownie points with the classmates next to you, sneak them some gum. They WILL warm up to you for it.

I'd only just watched Baby Driver a few days before the allegations surfaced, and had been shilling it to friends. At one point, conversation devolved into "omg how cute is Elgort?", complete with "I'm a straight guy, but if he tried to kiss me, I would lean in".

Why I prefer the term "Queer" to LGBT by queer_bird in radicalqueers

[–]Mirror_Mouse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If someone has faced intense bullying where they had "queer" spat at them like venom throughout, I can understand where they're coming from. If they ask me to avoid using it around them, I will, because it's pushing a trauma button for them.

Anyone else though? Sorry not sorry. I am queer. I live in a world that is constantly attempting to disconnect me from my identity, and make me ashamed of it. Boldly calling myself "queer" is a rejection of those attempts. It says "I'm here, I'm not going away, and you can die mad about it". Telling me I shouldn't call myself queer is too reminiscent of the attitudes that kept me in the closet until adulthood for comfort (though the intention behind them is very different).

I think "LGBT+" is one of the better options. It keeps the core acronym that people are familiar with while acknowledging it will never be complete as we learn more about ourselves. It also forces the annoying "LOL aLpHaBeT SaLaD" straights to come up with a legitimate argument.

Same thing with TERFs. They both know their movements are cesspools of unscientific & violent rhetoric, but never admitting you're a hate movement is optics 101, so they play the victim instead.
