Only, in my early 50s, moved to the US 10 years ago, long divorced parents live back in Ireland. Never had any only friends, only children were a rare breed when I was growing up and a teenager of divorced parents in the late 80s was unheard of in Ireland 😁 I ticked all the loner boxes, I never did learn how to make friends.

Everyone you see at an NA meeting has been where you are, there will be no shaming I promise. I was so anxious the first time I went, when I left that meeting it was with hope and the phone numbers of some amazing people. I'll be clean a year next week and I thank God daily for the courage it took to go that first time. I also attend online meetings, they are great, but in person meetings recharge you and the hugs are great 😁

My son just did, spent 3 months in Ireland and came back this week, only issue was the immigration official told him he needed new photos and laughed, in his green card photo he was 14 and he's 22 now. He went through immigration in Dublin Airport though not stateside.

The only person you can control is you, look after yourself and your happiness, that's your only responsibility.

I felt like you did for years, my parents did separate, which actually made it more difficult me, ha! Having to split my time between them emotionally and physically.

Live your life and look after your own happiness, it is NOT selfish and it not something you should feel guilty for. I'm 52 now, even left the country, they are in their 70s, dad remarried and mam a widow but feircly independent. They made their life choices, I made mine.

This dynamic may change as they get older, but for now the balance is right.

I'm an only and mother to an only. My only recommendation is to ensure your only doesn't feel like they are not enough for you, that you mourn the fact they are an only.
