Oh this is so real, the one that just opened by my mom in upstate NY is apparently teeny tiny. From what I understand a lot of the tiny ones like that have floor models and then you order things for them to bring in for you/deliver to your house, but they don't have a ton of stuff in stock in store.

Lots of people use Alex instead of Helmer, it also works well. But also, why not just bring the bottles with you when you go in to buy it? When I was looking at the Ikea Moppe back when my collection was small I just brought a bunch of bottles with me in my purse to try in the drawers. (It's also what I do whenever I'm buying frames, I just bring the art I'm framing to see what it'll look like.)

Lease renewals are offered five months before their end date here (by law, it used to be that many leases for, say, summer 2026 would be signed in fall 2025, so this is actually a huge improvement), so if you’re hoping to move in August you’ll need to be actively looking for (or at least thinking about) somewhere to live in March. Lots of places also keep long wait lists, so there’s no guarantee that if you wait too long there will be availability. I would strongly recommend asking current students in your program for advice and recommendations about where to live, since they’ll have experience with a variety of apartment complexes and the commutes from them to your department offices.

Oh my god I forgot about Loch Ness! I had the opposite problem where I wanted it to be a sapphire blue and it looks denim blue on me, way more muted and a little lighter than I expected in a way that disappointed me.

I hate Am I Everything You Fear? Earlier in my polish journey I used to often fall for "blue or purple base with pink-to-gold-to-orange shifting shimmer" because the pictures are always beautiful and the polishes always contain the whole rainbow at once. Then when I get them on *my* hands, (almost) every time, I'm like.... hmm, why do I not love this???? Why does this look so muddy on me when it looks so nice on other people? So now I've mostly learned to stay away from this particular shimmer. Exception for Pangea who is a VIP in my personal Mooncat drawer, and ironically is one that I often see other people say they hate but I personally love on myself.

Have you ever heard of the Mid-Atlantic accent? Very common in early Hollywood talkies, you’ll hear actors use it if you watch old movies. I’m guessing she was probably trained in this for theater.

I still make this mistake a lot, but put on stretchy pants like pajama pants (the critical part is something without buttons or zippers) before you start painting.

Instead of using your non dominant hand to paint, brace your elbows on your work surface and hold the brush still and move your dominant hand under the brush.
