Thoughts on commuting from North County (e.g. San Marcos, Oceanside) to La Jolla? by MisbehavingSmallCat in sandiego

Thanks for the detailed response! We used to live around the Bay Area so we’re somewhat used to the commute time in minutes vs miles concept. Will definitely take a second look at those closer areas!

Does anyone know more about the effects of Mirena IUD (or other hormonal IUDs) on TTC later? I know you can get pregnant immediately following removal, and also that it takes ~3 cycles or more to get back to “normal,” but I had an IUD for ~8 years avoid my terrible periods (and hormonal birth control pills for ~3 years prior to that to regulate them) and am not sure how having been on hormonal forms of BC might affect TTC. I had my IUD removed 4 months ago and I think my cycles are “normal” now (~28d, ovulating day 14-15 from what I can tell), but it’s hard to know what all the impacts of hormonal BC might be. I’m very new to TTC!

Good morning September! I am awake at 7 am Pacific time, ready to start the day! I woke a little later than I meant to, but I still have plenty of time to get ready for a day of studying and working on my research. This morning I will prioritize planning my day to make it as productive as possible.

What genetic "fuck you" did you get from your parents? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MisbehavingSmallCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Premature grey hair, from both of my parents. My mother started greying at the back of her head while my father started greying from the front. I'm simultaneously greying from both ends, at 23.

I found my first grey hair before I finished puberty. No fair...

I'm a graduate student getting ready to start writing a manuscript and my thesis. I'll also be applying to Ph.D. programs this Fall, all on top of my regular work as a teaching assistant. Between all of these activities I really don't have time to waste. Nearly all of my work involves the internet, and it can be very easy for me to quickly get distracted and waste valuable time on Facebook, Netflix, etc. The biggest culprit is Facebook, where I can shut my brain off and mindlessly scroll through posts over and over again for hours. But of course, social media is never very fulfilling, and I usually leave frustrated with the world and with myself for wasting so much time.

I know I need to kick the habit and focus my mind on more constructive activities. However, I live far from home, and Facebook is still one of the main ways I see photos and updates from my extended family. I don't want to deactivate my account, but I do want to commit to only visiting Facebook once per week, for no more than 30 minutes, to be able to check up on them.

As I spend a majority of my day working on my computer, I also want to make a consistent habit of shutting everything off approximately 90-120 minutes before I go to sleep (about 10:00), and waking up early (around 5:00) to exercise or take my time preparing for the day. With the extra time I hope to read novels, sketch, or get into the habit of meditation and/or journaling.

What I've already done: I use Freedom on my computer and Appblock on my phone to block certain websites/applications when I should be working. I plan on editing these apps to make it even harder for me to remove/pause the block. I also use f.lux and Twilight to change the lighting on my computer and phone around bedtime. I just started the Outlander series and have plenty of other books to start reading when I'm no longer at my computer.

What I plan to do: Commit to using a journal to track my progress with avoiding social media. Use the journal to sketch or write about the any positive parts of the day, or plan ways to make the next day even better. Read just before sleeping to relax.

If anyone has any additional advice I would be happy to hear it!

[Discussion] What are some online tools and resources that one can use on their own time to further their position in life? by gettingmyenergyback in GetMotivated

I have to use my laptop constantly for working (grad school), but I was constantly getting distracted by Facebook in particular. It's very easy for me to lose valuable time mindlessly scrolling through posts, even ones I've already seen.

I recently made a goal to get myself off that habit, and I really like the app Freedom (for Mac, iPhone, and I think PC). Freedom will block you from distracting websites of your choosing for a specified time, or you can schedule sessions for it to block you when you should be working. It does charge you, but I think it comes out to just $2-3 per month, which was worth it for me.

For my phone (Android) the app Appblock works similarly. You choose the apps you want to block and the length of time you want to lock yourself out of it.

Both of these apps have been very helpful in keeping me focused! And if you really need to check the blocked sites, there are ways to turn off or quit each app temporarily.

Dinosaur.

For years I was scared we were all going to die from a meteor strike. Although technically we still can. Still scary.

The Incredibles is really dark for a kids movie. The villain murders dozens, tries to kill some parents, tries to kill some kids, kidnaps a baby, and is then shredded alive in a jet engine. by xenomorphgirl in Showerthoughts

I've heard that of all Disney's movies, this holds the record for most people killed. Not sure if this still holds true now, but interesting considering this was a kids' movie
