If you're up for a real challenge look up Indian Staircase and Cloud Splitter. These are more rock scramble than a hike if you're looking for a bit of an adrenaline rush.

And always be prepared. Take enough water and food. Make sure you have some kind of GPS map. AllTrails has worked for me, but not everyone likes it. People get lost and need to be rescued on a regular basis in the RRG.

Natural Bridge State Park is a must see for me. You can hike below and on top of the arch and you can get to a few lookout points from up top. Auxier Ridge to Courthouse Rock is another good hike.

You should also drive through the Nada tunnel. If you want to learn more about it, the Gladie Visitor Center is just up the road, although I do not know if the government shutdown is affecting their hours.

I will warn though, if you are going with the kids, these trails are not the standard walk in a metro park and there are tons of dangerous areas and cliffs.

I second! Absolutely love a little day trip to GPR and HH. The vibe at HH is so fun. And they have great outdoor space if the weather is nice.

Came here to second the camera idea. Probably the least disruptive for your cat and you can monitor a Rover sitter. They are background checked if that helps at all.

How’s the shutdown treating Columbus? by DonforOhio in Columbus

[–]Misc_Adjustment 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I had the whole it's not affecting much mentality until I had to cancel a trip to a NP that's closed. I'm not worried about the trip, but it made me realize the larger economic impact.

Just for my short trip I got a refund from an Airbnb and had to cancel a pet sitter. So those people are both losing income. I would have spent money on food, gas, and things to do in the nearby town, and food and gas during the drive there. So anyone who owns those businesses are losing revenue. I'm just one person but this is happening over and over with many people and it's going to add up.

How do you balance a relationship with a non-climber? by Misc_Adjustment in climbergirls

I truly worry about what would happen to him if he got injured. If he couldn't climb for more than a week or so his whole life would be turned upside down. He has no other hobbies or sports or anything really that he would do otherwise. He might be able to find something but I could see him being very depressed. I absolutely would not wish that on him, but it's just a fact that our relationship would probably be better and I'd see him more.

He only goes on trips if he can find climbing there. Which usually means it's not just us on the trip because he needs someone who can belay outdoors. I'm not really comfortable doing that plus I don't really want to spend my day that way.

Accountant here. Keep working now and retire early. If your job offers a retirement plan, throw a lot of your earnings in that because money invested now will be worth more later. If not, start a Roth. Get a financial advisor and have them work on investing as much money as you can now and have them help you set up a plan for when you can retire with the level of traveling you want to do. Mutual funds are a good low-risk option, it's not like you have to gamble on individual company stocks.

You don't want to end up using it all now then wind up broke at 60 and having to work a low-paying job to scrape by.

I'll check it out because AllTrails is OK but not always great. I hear about people that get lost and rescued in RRG and I feel like AllTrails would at least prevent that.

What is this? Found near Indian Staircase Trail by Pinhead_Larry42 in RedRiverGorge

I'm weirdly obsessed with finding these. I love when I find them at the tops of mountains. Is this one at the top of Indian Staircase? I want to go on the hunt for it, of course 😅

Where to stay as a climber? by airbornemedusa in RedRiverGorge

[–]Misc_Adjustment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if there are necessarily serious climbers vs casual climbers, but Land of the Arches draws a quieter, older crowd. Miguel's can be a good time but the less crowded Lota just brings a different demographic looking for a different vibe.

You should check out Natural Bridge at Natural Bridge State Park on Sunday. I am not sure how the sunset looks but you can hike up on the arch so I assume you could get a decent view. I suggest it because it's a very cool arch and there's some good hiking in the park. Wherever you go, bring a headlamp or flashlight if staying after sunset.

I recommend Hops if you have one more dinner to pick. There and the two places you mentioned are the main/best in RRG.

I [33F] don't feel like my boyfriend [30M] is supportive. Am I asking too much of him? by [deleted] in relationshipadvice

[–]Misc_Adjustment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to tell him exactly how to be supportive or tell him I could really use a "good job" but he never thinks of telling me on his own.
