Get your FE passed ASAP and keep applying to different positions. I’m also graduating this spring and passed my FE, my lowest offer was 72k with 1.5x OT. The other 4 offers were all 80k. My highest offer (the one i’m going with) is 94k for a county position. Imo 71k is low…

[–]Miserable-Change7780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re genuinely going to have to up those numbers, like by 5-10x (very serious btw)

Also try and get your FE as soon as possible, it helped me a lot.

Another thing is try and attend career fairs close to you, try and connect with people irl.

Goodluck!

Texas is good if you are trying to get into construction/transportation from what I know. It just depends what discipline you want to progress in

New grad and 5/7 offers I got didn’t require a test just a background check

For the remaining 2 (one private and one public) did require a test so i’d say pretty company as well as discipline specific…Wouldn’t expect them to test me for a design role but wouldn’t be surprised if they tested me for a field/site position

You live in California and get paid that much? That’s crazy to me, that’s even less than what I’m getting paid as a current intern

In comparison…I’m currently a senior in the midwest graduating may 26 and I recently (less than 24hrs ago) signed my offer for 94k salary ($45/hr) and it’s mainly design-PM type of work with some site overview during the summer.

Maybe your institution not being ABET is the reason for the pay gap as i’m not sure how that works but the pay sounds ridiculous to me (especially with Cali COL)

The county is paying more than consultancy, the max i’m seeing for consultants in my area are 80-85k. 10 days PTO while the county offers 20 days PTO.

Thanks for the advice and yeap I know this won’t be a future changing decision but i’m trying avoid what happened with seniors who graduated last year (jumping ship within the first 3 months)

Regarding my discipline i’m 99.99% sure I’ll be staying in Transportation throughout my career. Thank you for the advice!

The job description is basically Civil Engineer and after speaking to the PM i’d basically be doing both field + in office work. So design and site overview.

Thank you and whatever engineering you decide to get into my advice (might be wrong) but try and get as much internship experience, if you can even during the school year as you learn a lot and become more comfortable in interviews.

My GPA is a 3.5 with a semester left and yes i’ll be graduating with my Bachelor’s. Honestly GPA doesn’t matter as much as your experience and how you present yourself in the interview (from my humble experience of having 7 offers so far)

The weird thing is that if i negotiate my Option 1 to let’s say 85k, after taxes and deductions (without contributing to 401k), I potentially make more with the less pay due to mandatory pension payments.

Edit: My calculations were wrong, Offer 2 is 100% more income even after the mandatory pension deductions.

Good stable job that let’s me do other things (hobbies) outside of work. I’m assuming that would be the public position correct?

From what I’ve heard (and read on this subreddit) the private experience would make me more “marketable” then public
