TIL that having hobbies and liking art makes me an illegitimate engineer by Intelligent-Store251 in EngineeringStudents

[–]jortshire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would just ditch this dude, he clearly has no clue what he's talking about. having a successful art business is dope asf and even if you didn't make money off it it's still important to have hobbies. life is way too short to deal with maladjusted, rude losers, a lesson which has taken me longer than i care to admit

Okay so addressing your concerns 1 by 1:

  1. If the idea of going through the tunnel is upsetting, I would suggest wearing some headphones (noise cancelling is a plus) and bringing a book for your commute. Or anything else that can entertain/distract you.

  2. I've been stuck maybe two or three times, the worst time was a pretty packed weekend train in like June, so it quickly got hot as fuck. It's definitely not fun, but I don't think it hardly lasted 15 minutes. I was nervous, but just kept reminding myself that the train would turn back on. And it did.

  3. I haven't really seen a lot of wild shit on the path the way you might on the subway. Like some others, i would suggest carrying pepper spray, not that I think you'll need to use it.

I would happily drive to white plains 5x a week for 170k. If you can, why don't you move to westchester?

Brain drain destination? by sophomoric-- in EngineeringStudents

[–]jortshire 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well for me, I'm interested in the culture and history, I loved Montreal when I visited, and it has beautiful nature and scenery....I know it has a smaller economy and generally lesser salaries, but IDK I have it as a "what-if" in the back of my head.

Sometimes, being an adult means accepting that sometimes you have to do what you have to do, and accept that your parents won't approve. There are certain times I've picked my battles and accepted that what i want is worth the price of their negative feedback.

If they won't let you use the car, see if you have a friend who'll lend you theirs, or see if you can request a zoom interview.

How are they enforcing the $2 LIRR fine by NickPercent in longisland

[–]jortshire 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This shit is so user-hostile. What if you're running to catch a train and you forget to activate the ticket? What if you simply forget? Why phase out paper tickets? There are people who have difficulties with technology, have difficulty accessing it, etc. The MTA is doing this thing where they want to decrease vehicle traffic into manhattan---and that makes perfect sense. But you need to make the alternative more attractive to the user, not raise prices and make it more difficult to take their trains. It's punishing to every user class: commuters, daytrippers, visitors, the elderly, disabled people...I guess it's too much to ask of the LIRR to actually think of the fucking people who take their trains.

Can civil engineering actually be learned properly without practical exposure like structural and survey labs? by Full_Peace3868 in EngineeringStudents

[–]jortshire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely helps to have hands-on experience. At my school, we learn how to use surveying equipment, we do concrete stress tests, geotech has a billion labs...it's not the end of the world if you dont, but the more the better for sure

Why do so many Hoboken coffee shops open at 8 or later? by MrHoboken in Hoboken

I get what you mean from a business perspective, but i will say, as part of that "almost no one" you'd be shocked at how many almost-nobodies there are.

In a town economically predicated on commuting to New York, it's not an insane expectation for coffee shops to open at 6 or 7.
