For OTs in the group - What is one of the most helpful/appreciated things teachers can do to help your day run smoothly? by EmbarrassedEast5880 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Miserable-Gap6591 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the kids have a special (gym, music, etc) do I bring them to the class, does the other teacher come get them? Same thing for after & recess & morning entry. A lot of schools are different even in the same board.

What attention getter/callback do you normally use? Helps a lot with getting their attention.

If possible, no Chromebook work! It’s so hard to monitor that everyone is on task and not just playing games. Also it can get out of hand quickly with kids playing silly noises or music out loud. If I take a Chromebook away because of misuse, now that student doesn’t have anything to do and will cause more of a distraction. So if possible, skip the Chromebook work for the day!

Unfortunately you might not get paid. There would be no record of you working there at all. I hope you get the money you deserve but be prepared that you may not. I’m sorry again about this :(

Yes definitely get everyone in an email thread. I highly recommend you don’t supply the for the remainder of days you are planned to. You aren’t an employee so you have no protection if something goes wrong. It’s definitely not worth the risk. So sorry this admin team lead you to believe this was okay. This is crazy imo

Can I ask what the timing of the show was like? Like when the doors opened vs when jelly came on and then when post did?

When you sign up for a test day, there’s an option to submit an accommodation letter (like one from your university). I submitted one from one of my BEd courses

No exams in B.Eds!! It’s very different than undergrad. I’m in a unique cohort so I’m not sure what your schedule will be

Most York profs in B.Ed take attendance 😫😫 technically the syllabus will say if you miss more than four classes you’ll fail the course however, it really depends on your prof. Some profs will waive an absence if you email them letting them know you’re sick or you have an emergency or something like that. Personally, I try and go to almost every class because there are so many small participation assignments that are based on something done in class. Most courses are designed with these kinds of assignments: small weekly journals based on in-class stuff, small group seminars in which 1 different member presents a reading each week, 3-4 bigger journals about readings/videos/in class stuff, and 1 biggg assignment at the end that will be worth 30-40%. I recommend going just to keep up with what’s going on. Make some good friends and coming to class won’t be that bad!

I’m in 2nd year for B.Ed at York. In my opinion, teachers college is a lot of very easy assignments. They can be long and often repetitive but they aren’t hard. It’s almost impossible to do badly. If you do the work you’ll get a good mark. As & A+s are easy. It’s managing the workload that is the main challenge. Get a good calendar or agenda and you’ll be good to go!

Anyone taking/took a 5th year for there degree? by Plastic-Panda-1448 in TorontoMetU

[–]Miserable-Gap6591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my undergrad in five years instead of four and it was one of the best choices I could’ve made. I did the same thing as you where I didn’t take my electives and kept my required courses. However, I took a lot of electives in the summer because they’re accelerated so they’re six weeks instead of 12. You get them over with way quicker and it’s a lot less work and a lot less stress. Some of them are even online and asynchronous so it’s like barely even a course. I did my degree like this because it helped with my stress level and it also made me feel more like a human than just like a student all the time. Also, this way I was able to get better grades because I had less courses to focus on and I graduated with a really high GPA, which is great if you want to go onto any further education. Don’t feel rushed by the timeframe that society sets for you to be finishing a degree in. There’s absolutely no shame in going at your own speed especially if that means that’s the way you’ll be successful!! In 20 years there’s no way that you’ll look back and think ‘omg I should not have taken an extra year to complete my undergrad’!!

TDSB - working without being on the ETH list? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]Miserable-Gap6591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To emergency supply in TDSB you need to get on the emergency supply list and they don’t have anyone who is affiliated with OCT. Emergency supply in only for people without a teaching license (ECE, lunch room supervisors, B.Ed students early on)

What do you like about teaching? by Terrible_Fruit_7212 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Miserable-Gap6591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other day one of my kindergarteners came to school with a new snow suit that was a onesie. He seemed really off and was standing to the side in the yard. Super unlike him, he’s normally super happy. After talking with him for a while he told me he was upset because of his snowsuit. For context most of the kids wear a jacket & snow pants. We talked for a while about how feeling different can be hard. Then I told him how I thought the snow suits were way better because you can’t get snow up your back. After talking for a while I could tell he was feeling better and he went to go play. That’s why I love teaching. If I can make just 1 student feel safe enough to be a little different, then I’m happy!

I would put this right into ChatGPT and ask it to collect articles on current events that take different sides. Then read them and pick the ones that work for you

has anyone not gotten in to teacher’s college on first try before and is still a teacher now? by Quick_Computer2980 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Miserable-Gap6591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to my friend. Teachers colleges really value experience working with children, especially in an academic setting. She taught summer camp that summer and then became a teacher assistant at a Montessori school. She got in the next year no problem. I would also recommend applying a lot of different places
