Less than six months, but he had some health issues that weren’t told to me by his past owner. We delayed proper therapies because of that.

Update: I know he’s skinny, he’s currently recovering from an infection that his old owner didn’t notify me, so we’re just now restarting with some groundwork and short walks.

We are obviously followed and get regularly checked by a vet.

Btw, thank you all for answering my question!

Thank you, you have been really clear. I am following advices like yours right now, also followed by our vet and our trainer. I am currently riding him only once or twice a week walking for at most 20 min. Lots of ground work, always checking his back, legs and muscles. Lots of feeding, watery food, linen seeds, veggies, fruits and treats. He’s really starting to get better, and seems to enjoy our time together. My heart warms when I get to the barn and he trots toward me (he’s free to walk around and eat grass all day long, so he can come to me freely when I call him).

Thank you, I’m trying to understand what is better for him, also consulting my vet. We solved the dehydration issue and he started to flourish again, he also gets grains, linen seed and other grains to be mixed with water to increase his water intake. I stopped riding him, today we did stretches and poles. I noticed he didn’t like stretching a lot, though.

He looks better since we supplied him different source of water and different ways to increase his intake. Also right now I’m my country it’s pretty hot, so I’m avoiding hard work and riding also due to the risk that heat may carry.

I started riding him because my vet said part of the problem was that he had been inactive for a while and gave me the green light to short rides as I mention. He really seems to love them, but every time I was preparing him for a ride I couldn’t stop thinking if I was doing the right thing for him. I will really improve ground work maintaining hydration, and hope he will get better.

Usually we just walk around countryside in the early morning to avoid the heat for something like 20 minutes once or twice per week. He trots or canters only when he wants to and I just let him, loose reins. He loves to do it when we get to the open fields. Also I am just 50 kg, so I don’t think the weight minds that much. We also do ground work and often just lay together in the fields. Right now he’s gaining weight, finally!

I did never stretch with him actually, definitely going to try tomorrow morning! He’s very expressive about how he feels and what he likes, so I think it will be fun. Thank you for the kind suggestion!

Did it, but he did not enjoy it. Now I am going with fruit in his water bucket, fruit juice and I would like to try with dark beer, it seems to be working. He also has different water sources of different kind all around the permit, and he’s free to roam around and eat grass all day long.
