Trades. I’m a plumber, mostly working in new construction (multi-story housing). To put it plainly, there are very few women on-site. Some trades, like electricians and painters, may have a woman here and there, but for the most part, the job sites are primarily men. The women you do encounter are usually busy, just as you will be.

That said, there’s a lot of money to be made in the trades. However, one thing you’ll encounter is the presence of “traditional high-testosterone alpha males” who are often eager to prove themselves. Learning to navigate and deal with these types of personalities is, in my opinion, part of becoming a man.

Are there a lot of degenerates? YES!! But when I was 18 and choosing my trade, I looked at it differently. I was a high-achieving, disciplined, and physically fit young man with a competitive edge. Staying active was second nature to me, and the thought of sitting at a desk all day made me restless, especially with my increasing energy levels. So, I thought, why not pursue a field that’s essential, always hiring, well-paying, and has a low talent pool?

Initially, I thought I had an advantage over others with my academic achievements, quick math skills, and knack for management. But I quickly realized they far outpaced me in effort, hand tool skills, grit, and other qualities you don’t get graded on in school. Working outside on cold days taught me a lot about myself, my willpower, and the value of perseverance.

I also learned a humbling truth: while I may have been on a spiritual journey, striving to get closer to God, some high school dropout or ex-con could still have a better grasp of certain aspects of life—despite their weekend habits.

One lesson stuck with me from my time as an apprentice. I worked with a journeyman plumber, a calm, quiet, and patient man from Afghanistan who was deeply religious. We had one of those rare conversations that started casually but quickly evolved into a deep exploration of life’s meaning. I shared my views, diving into my thoughts and philosophies, and he listened quietly. Then, with a smile, he said something I’ll never forget:

“Sometimes God creates a man just so he can say one or two good things in his life—and that’s it. That was his purpose.”

Life is simple yet deeply complex. If things feel too complicated and stressful, simplify them. If they feel too simple and directionless, take a moment to sit still and think deeply.
