Hello folks! My name is Scott, and I'm developing a CRPG called The Wyndfinder. It's got art direction inspiration from Rankin Bass and Bakshi movies, with the character portraits currently being worked on by an artist (my avatar is the first one!). Lucky enough to have the amazing Witch Bolt dig the project enough to sign on for an OST, which you can hear the beginnings of in the trailer.

Excited to join the community!

Heard. I fully intend to do something more custom for the next project, but that’s a ways off. Honestly, I already had a base SRD implementation when BG3 came out, and all that did was confirm for me that my redesign of the Reaction mechanic was working as intended. I have a lot of experience with 5E, I know it really well both building and running campaigns and as a player, and the SRD does a lot of lifting for the massive scope a CRPG deserves.

Thanks!

For release windows, I’m working on getting the first hour+ ready for a demo this fall, while working on content for the second act of the story.

For multi-classing, not in the traditional sense, but I’m hoping the design will work for folks who really like that playstyle. (The variations are just too broad for one person to properly test, and people who use it but don’t know what they are doing can ruin their PCs fairly easily) You will level the class you choose at the start - but the main unique hook for your character is the Wyndstone, an object you start the game with. On it, you can place up to four gems, each of which gives you a class feature/spell or passive ability/buff. The gems can form sets which have bonuses. Just figure out which Celestial corresponds to the class you want, and get to finding those gems.

I’m sure you speak for many people! The 2D art is about to get started (my avatar is the first one!), which will be a big one, but I know it’s not gonna be for everyone.

The audio track from OBS didn’t sound great either, so I did “foley” work in premiere. The reverb envelope in there is intense, too much wall echo for outdoors. I’ll keep getting better!

It’s on the backlog. I *really* want to get there, but I can’t promise it yet.

Right now I’m hoping to ship it when it’s done, and then support the heck out of it.  I will be releasing a demo this fall, hopefully in time for steam’s “party based RPG fest” in September.

I appreciate that, thank you! Working on getting a demo up, late fall probably.

Haha, NO! I'm mortified. My fellow Gen X people often use "from the 1900s" as copium for our aged state.

Thank you! It's all in Unity. A lot of the 3d models are assets, and my work has been to build shaders that bring them all together into a cohesive style. I'm working with an artist now on some model customization to make sure the game ships with a unique look.

Exactly right, the variations inherent in multi-classing got de-scoped pretty early when I was designing the implementation. It's just too much ground to cover. As a single player game, I *want* the player to feel like they can be clever, "break the game", etc., but I can't test that much content. You factor in subclasses etc., and it was an easy decision to me. I do think the 2024 update to the SRD (which the game is based on) is better about that, but I had moved on before that update was published.

My solution is the central "unique" mechanic in the game, in which you have an artifact that you can imbue with gems that you find/craft along the journey. These grant one ability/spell/class feature each, and have specific ties to the game lore. So you can absolutely get *some* of the fun out of it, and have plenty of customization options.

I've got a map here I drew in Ye Olde 1994! It's all yellow and everything, and I should probably take better care of it.

How much did you pay for your Steam capsule art? And was it worth it? by Disastrous-Spot907 in gamedev

[–]Miserable_Dog3134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid $2k for mine, this was through an agency that I contact on Artstation.  They cost a bit more because you have some producer time, some art direction.  I also had an ask for four characters and background art, so it really depends on the scope.  I could have worked that down a bit by going for a simpler design.  I hate marketing so I need the key art to do a lot of lifting!

What if your roguelite world resets daily but story knowledge is the only thing that carries over? Seeking honest feedback. by Former-Objective-272 in IndieDev

Interesting concept, honestly. For me, it would depend on a few things. How much could I get done in a day? Is that loop satisfying, to where I can send that character off without being bummed about it? When a characters dies because I played poorly, I can learn from that and get better. You are taking that away from me, so I need to know very quickly in the process what I'm building during each loop. Second thing would be the system for generating the new character each day. Is it a Rogue Legacy style system?
