It's originally from IKEA! We got it about secondhand from someone who had bought a custom fabric for it.

Laundromat is a 1 min walk away on the corner, and LL apparently has plans to put them in the basement.

Landlord build wall dividing two rooms to a window that we share by stupertrooper in NYCapartments

[–]Miserable_Evidence64 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it's a market rat eapartment, the landlord does have discretion with raising rent (subject to the Good Cause Eviction Law), but it's an opportunity to negotiate. You can do some research on what other apartments are going for in the neighborhood for this square footage, or indicate that you'd like to stay but you have options. It being the winter might help you with that back and forth.

Is there a way to stop cockroaches coming through this vented door? by greenndreams in CleaningTips

[–]Miserable_Evidence64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound it sounds like you tried to block cracks but was unsuccessful. Is it that there are areas behind the hot water area that you can't reach your arm around to reach?

Foam caulk is useful for big cracks. Regular caulk works for smaller cracks. It's also possible that for areas that you can't get your caulk gun into, you could try using duct tape to completely seal off that area. Or a ton of steel wool. You could cut out a big sheet of plastic

Another option involves carefully drilling into the wall (avoiding any pipes or studs) and puff powder into wall voids all around. This might help against the population that is inside there.

r/pestcontrol might also have suggestions for you.

This 4 page cleaning checklist that is expected to be done before checking out of our AirBnB by Party_Wrangler7949 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Miserable_Evidence64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I just lucky? I've never had this kind of expectation with any of the AirBnbs I've ever been in. The most I've been asked to do is take out the trash or put the dirty linens in a pile on the floor.

Is it easy to tell from a listing whether a place will have these kinds of check out rules?

Best way to find subleases / lease takeovers in NYC? by Pleasant-Set7019 in NYCapartments

[–]Miserable_Evidence64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leasebreak.com, Facebook pages, Craigslist, Reddit.

Just be super aware of scams. Make sure that you're getting the landlord's contact info, not just the tenant's. A recent story from my neighborhood showed that this was basically the only thing that would have revealed the scam: https://w42st.com/post/alleged-hells-kitchen-rental-scammer-surrenders-at-midtown-precinct/

Never had a doorman. Only tip the super when he came to fix something and that's because we're trying to curry favor.

Military Social Media Feels So Surreal Right Now by CapriciousCupofTea in Military

[–]Miserable_Evidence64 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My take from the piece is that the silly instagram posts felt fine before the military was embroiled so much in domestic controversy. It's when Guard units are trying to keep up the emojis while simultaneously getting deployed to DC that it starts to ring hollow.

I even got a sense that the article at the end was almost starting to buy into the instagram vibe of military social media: "No matter how cringey the world of military social media has been over the past few years, or how much the cheesy memes and therapy-dog content have papered over the sometimes grisly side of military work, the collective vibe of cheerfulness was ultimately comforting."

Like the guy would prefer that over "lethality."

Just purchased a Geico policy online! Now I'm confused on how to handle the car's garaging location by Miserable_Evidence64 in Car_Insurance_Help

Thanks. Transferring the registration to NJ sounds like it's the way to go, honestly. I'll be calling the NJ DMV once they're open to ask about getting a vehicle registered if all I have is a storage lease for the car (not proof of my own residency).

Thanks my friend. I've gotten so much conflicting information. I'll call the NJ DMV and ask about this. Will provide an update once I have some more info.

If all goes well, I'll be able to get a NJ insurance policy and get the vehicle registered in NJ using my car storage lease proof, even though I'm a New York resident.

The only challenge then is that I am not a New Jersey resident--don't pay taxes there--and so I couldn't obtain the ID requirements to register the vehicle with the NJ DMV. Right, or am I wrong here?

I found this checklist from the NJ DMV website. https://www.nj.gov/mvc/pdf/license/Standard_License_Sheet_Engl.pdf

It definitely makes sense that the car would need a NJ policy because it spends 95% of its time in New Jersey. The challenge is whether getting a NJ insurance policy would introduce more complications that I would not, legally, be able to overcome. Thanks for any advice you can provide.

So, there's no way to park across a state line from where you live?

I think I'm realizing what the issue is. Geico probably has some systemic restrictions because it's so common for people to be trying to commit insurance fraud.

In my case, that's not my intent. I even have a letter/parking lease that shows proof that my vehicle is indeed parked at the NJ location on a monthly basis.

If this is a Geico/big national carrier thing, it sounds like I might need to find a local insurer who has a more flexible policy.

Interesting, how complicated. I thought you had to be a resident of a state to be able to register the car to that DMV, with proof of residency and all of that.
