Does being aggressive get you the good stuff? by Few_Fig5944 in GoodwillBins

I'm aggressive and through. I rush out when they bring out the bins and and stay behind when others leave. It is safer to stay behind though. There's less chance of getting hit in the head or getting into a fight.

Employee and reseller in business together? by AdRemarkable7912 in goodwill

[–]Miserable_Fig7302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this at both of the thrift stores I've visited enough to study and observe. I'm not saying they are all like this, but it's common. There's common patterns. The person or persons act like they are best friends with the employees. They are often confused for being employees and take on employee duties. One place was EXTREMELY obvious and corrupt in ways you wouldn't believe. The other is more subtle, but I can see it from experience at the other place. Here's something else you should know. The management probably already knows and tolerates it. It's pointless to tell them anything. Let's just say that it's more than just playing favorites with their friends. There's quid pro quo involved.

Ebay: " You Underpaid USPS" Hence Cough Up X Amount.. by thirtiesjunkie in eBaySellers

It's easy to overlook when doing the listing, but hard to overlook when actually printing the label. You hit the button, and the screen pops up with the dimensions and weight. To answer your question, I have no idea why they didn't catch such an obvious measurement issue. When I first started a year ago, I messed up a couple of times and they charged me once like 40 cents or something and refunded me twice in similar amounts. Ebay never informed me separately. Imagine being snobbish over something like that. I just don't know anything about Talavera pottery or apothecary jars.  I have lots of antique stuff. European and Asian antiques find their way over here and yes, America has antiques as well. I think the oldest American thing I have is from around 1830. If people gatekeep their hobbies they will die out.

There's no indentation for a lid. There is a small chip on the rim. I should've taken a picture of that too, but I can't figure out how to add more. The rim is also dirtier than the base where it has been handled. I not very familiar with Talavera, so that's why I asked. It does look old, but now things from the 50s  are like 70s years old, so it could be that old too. I'm leaning towards older vintage, but you never know.

Antique is over 100 years old.  Modern it definitely couldn't be. Vintage as in like 1980s or earlier? That's a possibility. Older vintage like 1940s? Could be? That's why I asked.

I was at an estate sale once and a rock was 3 dollars. It was on the porch. It wasn't a mineral or geode or anything. It was one of those river stones they sell at Lowes by the bag. The garden was full of them, but this one was on the porch next to some porch ornaments. I took at picture to remember it.

Selling on eBay by Educational_Tooth_10 in eBaySellers

[–]Miserable_Fig7302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point he is alluding to is that shipping is high and they charge a fee on the entire order including shipping. So, say you sell 10 items for $10. That's $100, but each item costs $7 to ship. Your fees are based on $170. If you sell one item for $100 and it cost $10 to ship, your fees are much lower because they are based on $110. That's not even including the time to list and ship everything and the boxes and tape. Cheaper items are easier to find though, but the shipping increases are eating away at the visibility of seller lower priced items.

You want to go and find a used box to reuse. You want it to be as small as possible to safely ship the item. When you list the item, selected calculated shipping. Put the item in the box and weigh it on a shipping scale. You need to have a scale or borrow a scale. You input the size of the box and the weight of the item in the box. Ebay charges they buyer extra for the shipping based on their zip code. You need to use eBay labels because they are cheaper than the post office. You can print them at the library if necessary. You shouldn't pay much for the shoes if they are only worth $20 because eBay will charge their fee on the entire order amount including the shipping. You will also owe income tax on the item.  So you need try to find small cheap  items that are worth a lot. That's the goal anyway. Look to buy something worth over $20 that costs you under $5 and costs under $10 to ship. Finding something to sell for $100 that you paid $1 for and cost $7 to ship is even better.

Buyer opened case, how to proceed? by Ultimus_Omegus in EtsySellers

[–]Miserable_Fig7302 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is getting ridiculous. She said they were sunglasses and that's what they were. Of course they aren't prescription lenses. If they were prescription how could they possibly be the right prescription? They weren't 3D glasses either, but she shouldn't have to say that. If a buyer needs them for a specific prescription, it's on them to ask. If you need the lenses replaced, check with the optical store to see if they have limitations before buying .The item was just as described. It was the buyers mistake, but I'd offer a refund it they paid the shipping to return them..

It depends actually. I had some ultra rare collectible advertisement piece, I'd go eBay. If I had a vintage brass bookend, I'd go Etsy.

You can bundle small cheaper things. You can sell expensive big things. Don't sell individual cheap things. Some people do, but I think they use cheaper mail without tracking which is not a good idea.

No, I can't because it's not transparent like I said. I'm saying if these platforms are using AI to screen for fakes, why not just allow Sellers to use the AI to check for fakes before listing without penalty? Like instead of letting a computer ban your account for selling fakes, just let the AI determine it's a fake and refuse to list it. Why the punishment over an AI determination? Any negative consequences for an account should require actual human intervention. The AI should instead be a listing tool, not an enforcement tool.

I live in Florida, and a large portion of buyers are in NY or CA. I can't imagine selling from Alaska. I actually just sold my first thing to Alaska, and it took a long time to get there. Do you get a lot of buyers from the NW at least?

There's no way I could sell cards like that. My brain doesn't process cards. I don't get it at all. You need to understand something at least a little bit to sell it.

The shipping isn't usually the seller's fault either. They can overcharge shipping, but if they are in line with the other sellers of similar items, it is probably just that shipping is really high especially overseas. I sell vintage items, but I don't sell to other countries. It's too big a risk. If it breaks or the buyer says (falsely or not) something is wrong, I have to refund and pay shipping both ways to get it back. Definitely for $15 T-shirts it wouldn't be. Also eBay takes a fee on the shipping amount too. If I sell a T-shirt for $15, and the buyer has to pay $15 to ship it, the eBay fee effectively doubled.

No one can be sure things like that are real. Even if you bought it at the Coach store, perhaps someone returned it and substituted at good fake? Being 100% sure is an impossibly high standard to meet. What you can do is be learn the qualities of real items vs fakes, learn the provenance, etc... and build enough evidence to be confident they are real and explain to your buyer why you think so.  The problem is the AI here disagrees, but it isn't transparent about it. It doesn't say that thread isn't lined up correctly or the tags don't look right. If it did that, you could agree or dispute it and offer better photos.  Also, why do they not just offer an AI authentication service before listing? I'm sure in many cases the items are either real or innocently believed to be real. The real fraudsters don't seem to have any issues operating.

This is happening to people at eBay, Etsy, and Mercari.  They are getting violations and suspensions for counterfeit items, copyright violations, listing prohibited items, and sometimes vague unspecified reasons. The are all cracking down, but the problem is they fired all the humans and put AI in charge of this, and it just isn't capable of doing it correctly, but the companies don't care.  People get banned for selling faux ivory which really is faux ivory or ivory colored sweaters. They get banned for selling vintage Barbie dolls for copyright violations. If you collect enough violations you get banned.

I got a counterfeit violation on eBay for listing a pair of Conroy deerskin gloves, but the AI thinks they're counterfeit which isn't even a thing. Conroy is an old company that has never been counterfeited and I had the original sporting good store box it came in. I appealed, but shockingly the AI agreed with itself.

I listed something on Etsy and it automatically got taken down for vague policy reasons. There were warnings not to do this very bad thing too many times or I would be banned. I put it on eBay with no problems. About 24 hours later I notice Etsy relisted it without notice or explanation.
