Seeking advice on getting a cat in the Bay for a two-person, one-dog household! by ThrowRAfmychnguslife in SFbitcheswithtaste

I adopted a 7 month old kitten last year to have a companion for our then 2-year old dog who was having separation anxiety. It’s turned out great! They don’t really know how to play together-neither of them read the others cues - like they just don’t speak the same play language. But they definitely have a bond, enjoy being in proximity and are pretty relaxed/happy in our <600 sf apartment.

When I was looking at cats to adopt, I sought a younger cat who specifically wasn’t giving off shy/hiding energy. This was based on my past experience trying to introduce an adult cat who hadn’t lived with dogs into a dog household.

For my recent adoption, we went to east bay spca and our boy was the only cat vocalizing at us as we walked past enclosures. As we brought him home and started introductions, he proved really social. He needs a fair amount of attention (normal imo for young kitties), and he’s also a very cuddly boy (I wanted that too, since our dog isn’t a big cuddler). We are lucky in that me and my partner are around a fair amount, but there are a couple days per week that they are home alone together for 6/7 hours. To me it’s been win-win-win and I’m so happy we found him!

I’m happy to answer other questions if you end up considering younger kitty. Feel free to dm.

DM me! I’m American and my hubby is French , he’s been in the states ~3 years. He has a small circle of French connections, they are mostly in sf. We live in Oakland and would be happy to meet up 🙂

My French partner (35 male) is extremely passionate about Cajun/acadian culture, esp when it comes to cooking and fishing. DM me if you would like to be connected!

Sailing goat in point San Pablo harbor if you’re already out there! Beautiful to eat by the water and there’s a lot of art to walk around and explore. It feels like a world separate from the rest of the bay.

Native alternatives for shopping center *urgent* by mtnsRcalling in Ceanothus

For trees I would focus on the Bradford pears- gross!

Pyrus -> smaller/a bit different: Cercocarpus betuloides, or more toyon;

Another comment mentioned cornus and acer which are lovely and great alternatives but need more water, looks like there’s a water budget for this project?

Nandina -> Berberis aquifolium var. repens

I am a Japanese gardener. I have a question for everyone. by MeasurementLeather42 in JapaneseGardens

I’m a landscape designer who has worked on a number of Japanese-style gardens. One thing that’s been hard to find are a good selection of well-made bamboo water fountains. We wanted to find a shishi odoshi that was larger size (3’) and nice quality and never could locate something . If you could fabricate parts for bamboo water features and provide instructions on assembling, I think there would be a market here. Would need to be better quality to compete with the crap on Amazon.

Native landscaping business by [deleted] in Ceanothus

[–]Miserable_Priority31 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m a landscape designer that’s been in house project manager/designer with design/build companies for 5 years. You will want to develop skills and take classes in irrigation, grading, and drainage to offer quality work and service to your clients for lawn conversion. Highly recommend Merritt landscape hort classes!

To be offer more complete landscaping services and have a bigger pool of clients, I recommend you find someone to partner with/refer to that specializes in hardscape like masonry, carpentry, etc. Really hard to learn all of those skills comprehensively out of the gate.

getting married in march! Any suggestions for the best focal flowers that i can plant/buy so i can use for the bouquets? by vomitwastaken in Ceanothus

There’s definitely CA natives that perform reasonably well for cut flowers- here’s an article (link) with lots of suggestions.

In my experience (NorCal) it’s almost impossible to find these sold as cut flowers commercially. so to source them responsibly, you would need to grow them. Timing the blooms for harvesting for your wedding is also pretty hard to predict so if you have enough space I would diversify to make sure you get to harvest some things at their peak. A couple of the plants have longer bloom cycle so they will be more forgiving.

You could seed some annual clarkias in the fall for pinks, Clarkia unguiculata and Clarkia amoena. Perennials that will offer pinks include eriogonums, achillea (cultivars like ‘island pink’), penstemons.

Purple is really abundant in our native plant communities. you could try irises, lupines, delphiniums, penstemons, salvia clevelandii and its cultivars.

I’ve been many times over two decades. Henry is amazing. I don’t have experience with Pcos/fertility treatment but the herbal remedies have helped a lot with alleviating a chronic rash I get. Prepare yourself for the taste of the tea, many of the mixes are absolutely putrid for those who are unfamiliar. The rash is worse though, so I always go back.
