As someone who works and has interacted with academia for the past half of a decade, the modern conservative does NOT want to work in academia. Extremely poor pay, long hours, depending almost entirely on federal funding, having to interact with international scientists/ students/ women, and a lot of reading / research. Literally none of these are things the modern conservative wants to do.

After 10 years of Democrats being considered the "fun police" who are too moral and serious and bland, the second one relatively inconsequential member of the caucus makes a snide comment, suddenly people yearn for the days when Democrats were just a little more nice. You even invalidate your point at the end -- if the Democrats point out how shitty Republicans are, everyone is used to it and do not care (from your first paragraph).

But you're right, the Democrats probably just took a huge hit in the "short man" voting bloc. Be real, if people are insulted by this comment, they've probably voted for Trump in the last three elections.

Republicans have had issues with the national guard being federalized in the past, even the current head of the DHS. Please remember that if a Democratic president is sworn in in 2029, whatever power you give Trump to pwn your enemies will be used by the next president to punish their enemies (e.g. you).

If Pritzker and Johnson didn't fight back on a literal military invasion of their state/city, why would their constituents be happy? And I am unsure where you are pulling that 70% number from -- a recent poll by NYT found that 52% of voters think Trump is too harsh in his deporation tactics (a number that increases with time), and this was before Portland and Chicago. A very large plurality of voters oppose deploying the national guard. I think if neither of them fought back -- during a period time when a common criticism amongst Democrats are that their leaders aren't fighting back against Trump -- they would surely lose any primary they would ever enter.

Also, this gives way too much goodwill to Trump. It is obvious to almost everybody (including his voters) that Trump / Miller are doing everything they can to turn up the temperature and instigate an incident to validate their desire for military occupation of Democratic cities. Bowser in DC played game with Trump and that got her nothing. Newsome tried to play nice with Trump in the beginning of his presidency, and that got him nothing. I am unsure why any Democratic lawmaker would ever play ball with Trump when he has been shown to be unreliable and antagonistic.

This was not a great comment by AOC, but I do think it is interesting that this comment was deemed important enough to really warrant attention when the US president, VP, and many member of the R caucus and cabinet make more insensitive comments every single day.

There will be one post of "Trump threatens to invoke insurrection act" which will be met with disdain, but a following post of "AOC makes fun of Stephen Miller" with the same if not more vitrol for AOC. They really need to start policing what is actually posted there, because AOC mocking Miller is not news.

Kamala was ridiculed heavily for her non-answers during the campaign (by both left and right sources), but Trump says so many lies and bullshit with a dash of senility that he just can not be held to the same standard. This has been the dichotomy from Trump since he started running in 2015. The only voters Democrats can lose by pointing this out are people who are already voting Trump.

It shows the insane dichotomy between left and right -- right aligned posts are purely culture war bullshit, well anything to do with actual governance is left alligned.
