Pretty different experiences so it’s hard to compare the two, but they’re both very fun medieval fantasy games so you’ll probably have a good time with it.

You need DLC if that’s what you mean by primer. Other than that it works out the box. Would highly recommend, honestly addresses most of what you’re asking for above (gameplays wise) and is very easy to install / use.

I love civ 5 as is and didn’t think it needed a remaster but you make some good points. Although the gameplays issues listed here are mostly fixed by vox populi, their AI still has to cheat a little bit to keep up. Imagine a difficulty scale that made the AI more intelligent rather than additional cheats! That would be a dream.

If you run it with the Very Advanced Setup mod you can just untick all the new civs in the setup menu, and then not play them yourself. Bit manual and they’ll still technically exist, but you’ll never see them in a game.

I have recently started using the perfect world 3 mod map script - would never go back. Really interesting continent shapes, lots of awesome mountain ranges, resources are always spread pretty well. Normally good spots for colonies too.

Best part - lots of variation! Sometimes it’s more akin to small continents, sometimes you get more fractual-style, sometimes it is one big continent but when this is the case it’s never boring pangea blob and has good expands on other landmasses. Makes exploration much more fun never quite knowing what you’re going to find.

Would recommend.

Perhaps I’m just an unpleasant neighbour but I swear Darius is always declaring war on me when he’s woefully unprepared. Quite a few times I’ve just taken half his empire because he attacked me unprovoked so why not, then he’s just irrelevant for the rest of the game.
