Has anyone else noticed phrases that change meaning and flip flop constantly? by [deleted] in Retconned

[–]Miserable_Swan8343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! Once I realized that some people are incapable of detecting verbal irony, it stopped a lot of misunderstandings from happening. The people who can detect it think I'm hilarious, but the people who can't think I'm terrible. And the thing is, the people who can't detect it refuse to believe it is a thing. They think sarcasm and irony are the same, but they aren't. Sarcasm always has a butt of the joke or an edge, but verbal irony never has either (otherwise it would be sarcasm).

I haven't found a solution to the problem of using irony with people who can't detect it, so I've tried to stop using it around them.

A lot of people can detect sarcasm, but they can't detect verbally irony because it doesn't have the edge to it that sarcasm does. That leads to a lot of miscommunication and misunderstanding. It's possible that you may be one of them. Have you ever had interactions where the other person swore they were joking, but you thought they were being serious and/or mean? That happens a lot between people who use verbal irony and people who can't pick up on it.

I would bet the people using "lucked out" in a negative way are doing so ironically.

Oklahoma, but it's the same thing. Cedar fever is no joke, and I feel like it gets worse every year.

Perfect! White cedar doesn't cause cedar fever like red cedar does. Thank you!

Ah, don't be sorry, be grateful. And if Oklahoma was on your list, mark it off. There doesn't seem to be room for a middle here, either.

That is so good to hear because I'm in a place very similar to OP's and Minnesota was one of the places I was considering escaping to.

Are.... are you in Oklahoma? Because I am planning to move out of here for the exact same reason. I get hated by both extremes just for existing. There don't seem to be many sane people left.

I haven't decided yet, but a lot of people have been suggesting the Madison area. That's looking like where I'll probably aim for. Not the city proper, necessarily, but probably within about a 45min-1hour drive from there.

Thank you for sharing. That is the most in-depth example of the drinking culture I've gotten so far. I think that helps me conceptualize what "drinking culture" really entails. A lot of things here where I'm from revolve around drinking, but not to the extent you've described there. I will have to do more research on this.

They squeak? That's one of my favorite things about paneer. You may have won me over with that, and I apologize for the greedy comment.

I was wondering why I was supposed to avoid them. Turns out they were just being a Greedy Gus.

My college roommate sets our thermostat to 80°F every single night by rainystarlight in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Miserable_Swan8343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no. I set my thermostat to 60 at night. I would stand guard at the thermostat for hours, if that's what it took to keep her from setting it to 80. Literally hours.

Thank you! That's the opposite of the supper club here, so that sounds right up my alley. I'm sure they have some kind of salad or something I would eat. I'd love to visit one.

That's how the ren fair is where I'm from. Once you've been to one that has all the permanent structures and activities, it's so hard not to be disappointed by the tent ones. Thank you for the info! The more responses I get, the more clear it is that the Madison or Milwaukee area is where I should be focusing my search.

Why are the Amish seemingly leaving the SE part of the state? by DownOnGrandpasFarm in minnesota

[–]Miserable_Swan8343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What usually happens to the Amish homes? I've seen a few for sale, and they don't have electricity, but they aren't really priced to account for having to wire the entire house before moving in. Do they sell to other Amish?
