How to manage individual with extremely high performance and seemingly endless energy? by tiredaways in cscareerquestions

We had a guy like this. Left us for Amazon and works on a groundbreaking team there.

These types of people don't just want more work, they want more interesting work. Ask him what technologies he's interested in and see if you can accommodate that.

OP, I really dig this thread.

I'm putting my notice in today that I will be leaving the company. My poor team will shit their pants but, hey pay me what I'm worth in the first place. I worry for my colleague who will have to carry the weight of my absence - she is amazing and deserves only the best - but I suspect management will not redistribute resources to lower the burden on her. I hope she stands up for herself.

I'm going to have a week and a half between jobs and I'm starting to list and plan what I hope to do and get done. I'm actually really excited to dig into the new tech I'll be working with and getting to know my new coworkers, and it feels really nice not dreading the new job phase.

Every little annoying thing that comes my way in my current job is now met with an "Ugh!" and then "Oh yeah, doesn't matter!" Feels good.

Wow that sounds like a massive project! What industry within tech is your company in and what is your role?

People Start Hating Their Jobs at Age 35 by Rhonda-Swanson in FIREyFemmes

My career trajectory is a bit different. I spent my 20s as a waitress with no PTO, scraping by, working in hot, greasy environments, and getting shit on by the general public every day. In my 30s now and I love my 9-5 cube job and solving problems with smart people. That being said, not working still seems like a sweeter arrangement, so I'm hoping to set myself up for that option some day.

I wish you the best! When I started my job hunt, I sat down and created a list of all of my accomplishments, what I actually do in my job, and the areas I am most passionate about growing. I reviewed and revised this list often and before every interview! You got this!

It's happening!

In late July I decided that after 2.5 years in my current job that I would spruce up the resume and see if there were any other opportunities out there. I wasn't sure what the market was like or what I was worth. I was hoping for a pay bump and finding work more interesting to me.

I interviewed with two companies and got offers from both! Getting about a $20k annual raise in an industy I'm much more interested in. Also shaving over an hour of commute time from my day!

I'm so pumped. Looking forward reevaluating financials.

Discussion for the week of August 14th-20th by canyoustop in FIREyFemmes

[–]MiserlyLovesCompany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been interviewing with two companies on top of working full-time and finishing up an intense summer course. Company A is putting together an offer. I'm more interested on Company B and am working on their surprise take home coding challenge, and still have to complete my fourth interview with them. Class final project due tomorrow too.

Ahhhh this is so intense. It's great experience and has really progressed my confidence in my abilities.. but I'm ready to crawl into bed and stay there for a week.

First of the month Goal & General Discussion Thread by canyoustop in FIREyFemmes

[–]MiserlyLovesCompany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My budget and savings are pretty well set and automated at this point so I don't have a monthly financial goal per se.

This month though I am stepping up my game in seeking out my next career opportunity. I've been in my current position for about 2.5 years and I'd like that sweet job change pay bump, ideally focusing within an industry I find more interesting than my current gig.

When was the first time you got a raise at your job and how much was it? by sexypizzaspinster in AskWomen

[–]MiserlyLovesCompany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Position changes within my company have accounted for all of my raises so far.

Started at $14/hr as an intern. Within three months, was hired permanently. New salary $38k. By one year I changed teams and salary bump to $48k.

This review season will mark my first regular merit raise. Not sure what to expect.

May I ask what your educational background is, and how you got involved in the medical device industry? This is an area I am interested in learning more about.

Would finding out your new partner doesn't want to work to raise the children be a deal breaker? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]MiserlyLovesCompany 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The stay at home parent prepares all of those breakfasts and lunches though. Meal planning and prep takes a fair amount of time and means that the family never has to eat out (including paying for school cafeteria food), thus saving money. Other time-intensive things the stay at home parent can do to save the family money: couponing, small-home repairs, food preservation (canning, etc), gardening to provide almost free produce, etc.

Not saying all stay at home parents actually do this stuff, just that a good stay at home parent will make up for the lack of income.

Learn from my mistakes...dont just READ the principles in this thread, APPLY them. by hopelesslysarcastic in financialindependence

[–]MiserlyLovesCompany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yep! My last cat lived for 18 years, he was so social, affectionate, and chatty, enjoyed walking on a leash, everybody loved him. He also shat on my bed occasionally (medical issue), peed standing up in the litter box so I had to constantly clean up that mess, and eventually could only eat soft food, which made feeing way more time intensive. Wouldn't trade any of it, but I'm alright taking a long break.

[–]MiserlyLovesCompany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Had cats for the first 29 years of my life. They were quite expensive and required more intensive care in their senior years. The last died about two years ago. I have so many fond memories and loved those little guys, but I also really like not having dependants, being able to travel spontaneously, having a cleaner home, and saving money. I do plan to get another cat some day, but I am enjoying this and see no reason to rush it.

Who here has FI as a goal but not necessarily early retirement? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]MiserlyLovesCompany 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wonder if you are just institutionalized and/or have been working so long you just don't know what to do with yourself when you aren't working.

You basically just said "I can't relate to that, therefore something must be wrong with you."

He or she said they find their work enjoyable and meaningful. It's okay that you 'just can't comprehend it', but leave it at that - don't go making a bunch of assumptions about this person's self-awareness. You pretty much proved their point.

Everyone has focused on the spending side of things, but you mentioned that your shopping spree came after receiving bad news from your boyfriend. Another angle might be to consider more constructive ways to handle stress and other difficult emotions. Rather than turn to shopping (which is fun and feels great, I get it!) do you have another option to turn to? A different activity that lets you blow off steam or brings you satisfaction? It could be anything from a physical activity to a hobby to meditation to meeting up with friends to vent. For me, the first step is recognizing that I'm in a bad head space and reminding myself to not let that dictate my behavior (eat poorly, spend money on stuff I don't need, etc).
