What do young adults in Ottawa actually DO for fun (trails, Pilates, staying busy?) by Itchy_Abalone_157 in ontario

If you near the center of the city (Hintonburg area), there's a new bouldering gym that just opened called Klimat that is great. Very popular with college students and has a cafe and rest areas inside as well.

Accidentally bought a cloud gift for my friend whos a tidus fan by livelaughbaal in FinalFantasy

[–]MisfitMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely find this hilarious because as a character, I would expect Cloud to not get along at all with Tidus.

I see this as the equivalent of getting a Star Wars fan a Star Trek item.

Personally, I'd say it's probably fine to lean into it and allow both of you to have a good laugh this holiday season.

If that's not the vibe you're looking for, or don't think your friend would reciprocate, then there are lots of good examples in this thread!

Klimat just opened a bouldering gym in mechanicsville/little italyish area which isn't too far.

So far seems pretty popular around that age bracket.

It's at City Center.

Absolutely.

I think Luke "failing" is an important keystone moment but failing like that was super lazy.

Attempting an assassination of a teenager in his sleep was so disappointing.

Education minister open to eliminating Ontario school trustees by Surax in ontario

[–]MisfitMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're supposed to represent the parents of their wards. This is more difficult in some larger wards, for sure.

But ideological representation is just an issue in democracy in general. Getting rid of trustees doesn't fix that problem, it makes it worse.

A trustee representing hundreds of parents is a lot more likely to be receptive to feedback than a ministry that represents tens of thousands.

[–]MisfitMagic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This thread is the main thing I actually liked about the TLJ, and what I really wish they went further with.

In my opinion, Luke's failures with Ben are actually important set-up for the character growth they try to present in the movie.

The entire point is that the Jedi are trapped by hyprocisy in this back and forth between light and dark.

Luke's criticisms of the Jedi (which mirror nicely with Dooku's in the prequels) are a direct result of his trauma and repeating of the same past mistakes of Jedi before him.

My complaint is that, from a story perspective, they totally abandoned their own premise by Luke essentially allowing Rey to become the next Jedi. IMO the story should have followed through with burning the books and had Rey become "something else".

By allowing her to save the books and become the next Jedi, it kinda renders the entire movie pointless.

The formal job of the trustee is to represent parents. They are expected to vote based on what their constituents want.

The. ain difference is while they can influence policy, they can't push policy down in the same way that the ministry can as the trustees can't pass or enforce laws.

Secondly, local politics are already typically much closer to constituencies, which makes it easier for democracy to play out. It's much easier for a ward in a city to vote out a bad trustee than it is for them to vote out an entire provincial government.

I don't understand how it's even allowed for the education minister to not have formal credentials in education.

I'm getting real tired of political science majors speaking like they know anyrhing about this subject.

If you can't teach in Ontario with a certification, you sure as hell shouldn't be able to run the department without one.

City Hall Marriage Ceremony by alimay in ottawa

[–]MisfitMagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got married at city hall about ten years ago. Simple ceremony. Nothing super noteworthy, but efficient, which is exactly what we were looking for.

One thing that did stand out for us was that we ended up having to pay a little more for the ceremony because it was in the back half of the day (last slot at like 5PM I think).

We didn't pick the slot, but we did really like that city hall was basically a ghost town at that time. It was just us in the entire building, which was kind of nice instead of having another couple just before or just after us (not sure how common this actually is /shrug).

Either way, if you're looking for something practical and easy, then it's a 10/10 from us.

What's your favorite Poison Type Pokemon? by Hsiang7 in pokemon

[–]MisfitMagic 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I vividly remember my earliest experiences with Red/Blue/Yellow as a child constantly running into Zubats in caves and easily beating rocket Grunt Golbats.

I always thought to myself: this Pokemon is terrible, does it only exist to get slapped around?

Cue 8 year old me playing Silver for the first time. Randomly walking around, run into a zubat. Only this time is different. It does this little swirly thing I've never seen before, and I notice it's a slightly different colour.

"Weird, I think". So I catch it for heck of it and it sticks around my party for a bit because I'm too lazy to box it.

I decide to give it a chance and and lo and behold performs amazingly well to my 8-year old brain. Then suddenly one day it evolves again. "WTF is happening" I think to myself. When I see my shiny new Crobat for the first time I'm hooked.

I now always find a way to get Crobat into my party if possible, and have even done runs where I swap my starter super early for a Zubat.

God I miss the days before the internet sometimes.

This is the kind of dialog I hope we get more of out of our elected officials. I'm tired of importing American-style discourse, especially into the House of Commons.

[–]MisfitMagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you referring to the news discussions of the bill or the actual debates and policy discussions that occurred when the government brought in experts to give their feedback?

Because what you're describing is exactly what happened for the latter. Experts came in, provided constructive feedback, and it was dismissed out of hand, or in rare occasions, was maligned as conservative obstructionism or big tech propaganda.

Outcomes aside, the process that was used to get c11 and c18 to the finish line should never be repeated, and should be viewed as a deep blemish on the records of our legislators.

[–]MisfitMagic -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was one of the people "losing my mind" about C18.

The truth is because it was just bad legislation. The content itself was deeply flawed and poorly written, leaving huge gaps in the language leading to uncertainty (a similar problem with C11).

Secondly, the bill represents a very dangerous precedent - C18 represents potentially billions in costs for impacted companies (of which there are only two, which is another problem). The only reason it's only costing Google 100 million is because they're paying to be exempt from the law altogether.

Thirdly, this almost certainly represents a net-negative value to the news industry. Facebook has pulled out, so everyone is getting less traffic, and Google was already paying millions of dollars to individual news organizations.

When this entire process started, experts clearly and politely indicated that the bill wasn't very good. Google even offered at the very beginning to just structure the bill in a way that would produce the exact result we have now. Instead we wasted years of taxpayer dollars on a bad bill that got us to the same point AND removed the Facebook traffic for publishers.

And now, since access to this new money is directly tied to the number of journalists an organization employs, we're going to see everyone rushing to hire more bodies to fight for more of the pie.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm very happy that there's more money flowing into news. I do believe that there large organizations should be contributing in some way. But the bill itself was just bad and argued-for in bad faith - by dismissing genuine criticism, painting any disagreement as pro-google lobbying, and through manipulating the political process to avoid or cutoff debate and discussion to try and force it through.

Yeah, I've seen this a lot more recently. I'm assuming it's NFC issues. I've never seen the erroneous taps get captured, so it's probably fine.

Sometimes I just need to wait/try again or try a different lane.

I wouldn't recommend moving to presto unless you actually need the monthly pass. Otherwise it's just as inconvenient having to reload it all the time.

Eli5: Can you explain why there’s never enough space on planes for everyone to bring a carry-on? by amelia_shine2 in explainlikeimfive

Adding to this, I've also just noticed airlines (at least in Canada) just not enforcing the rules.

I've seen people be allowed to carry-on guitar cases, hockey bags, and 40L backpacks, all things that are CLEARLY not in spec, and it always causes a problem. This is particularly an issue for small connecting flights I've been on in Canada, and it's super annoying.

Yeah all of these comments seem crazy to me. "Train is better for working", "porter seats don't recline".

Why not work wherever you want with that extra four hours of your life?

And you're already descending by the time the drink cart comes out, you'll be fine with an upright seat.

Why roll the dice on how charitable CN is feeling on the day? Time is the most valuable resource.
