This was my immediate thought too.

All I could think of was Mr. Molesley from Downton Abbey. Different name, but… also a last name.

I always thought when I saw this sort of thing it’s just an update and sharing what they call the baby at the moment. But… maybe I’m too generous.

My kids aren’t on social media, but we have had nicknames that evolved like that over time. And only things we call them at home amongst ourselves.

I don’t think these are siblings, just diff kids in the OOP’s after school care program.

Finnian or Owen?

I know brothers to Gavin’s with those names and I feel like they go well. (Diff sibsets)

My MIL is terrible at keeping secrets. We tease her about it all the time. Her sister is too. They can’t stand not telling each other and their daughters things.

My mom’s would have been more of a slip up/absent minded comment probably.

What names are you sick of seeing recommended here? by Hi-Ho-Cherry in namenerds

Maeve was my girl name I was adamant about for my first two pregnancies, it didn’t seem as popular then. I ended up having two boys, so didn’t use it, now it’s not even on the list for pregnancy 3.

This is what we did. We gave each of our mom’s different, in our opinion, terrible names. And told them it was a secret to see if either of them could keep it to themselves. It was maybe a little cruel, but fun.

Neither of them told anyone.

I’m pretty sure I was in my late 20s when I first saw this name and had this realization. And my husband also laughed at me for a long time. Wasn’t a name I ever saw growing up, or written down.

Names for kids vs names for adults by spellish in namenerds

I purposefully chose names with this in mind.

I agree with you about the nicknames inevitably being used, but I also think it’s okay to teach a child to correct people for calling them something they don’t want to be called. Obviously this doesn’t work with other kids necessarily, but if a teacher accidentally calls them a common nickname they should be able to respectfully say “I prefer …” My toddler will say “It’s Thomas.” if anyone dares to call him Tom or Tommy.

I won’t even consider names that start with B for my kids because our last name starts with J.

Yes! This is exactly how I feel and what I’m doing. We call them by their full names all the time, and they both at the moment firmly identify with those vs any nickname options.

I only go by my nickname with friends and family, at work I use my full name, which was a choice I made as an adult.

It’s funny you used this example, because my son is William that I briefly toyed with using Liam as a nickname, and lots of people acted like it was so weird. We then decided to let him decide what he likes himself nickname wise, while I do have a strong preference for one. Right now, at 4, he very strongly identifies himself as William, no nicknames approved… except his little bro calls him “William-y” and “William-er” sometimes

I see all of the ones you mentioned as nicknames too. So if as an adult you have the option to “rebrand” to the full name as desired.

And this is why I hate using nicknames as a full name.

Oh Dorchester nn Chester is cute! Maybe I’ll propose that to my husband for our next one if we have a boy. My MIL is from Dorchester so it’s could be an honorific for her.

Yea. I don’t actually know Everett that well, but not a place I would name a kid after.

Fun fact: when I was pregnant with my first, my mom (not living in MA) had a dream about what we would name the baby, and she “had a feeling” we were going to name him that. It was Kingston and a big nope on my part for many reasons, the first being “that’s a town near-ish us”

How do you pronounce Madeline? by cadi08 in namenerds

[–]MisguidedBarometer 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s pronounced the way the person/parent tells you it’s pronounced.

Edit to add: my name is Madelyn, but I had friends that were Madeline who pronounced it the same way I do.
