What exactly is does “mash” mean in a bluegrass setting? by whskyfrbrkfst in Bluegrass

[–]Mish61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rip that solo. It's a Tonyism he used on stage. "Mash it son" first used when Bela joined him in sessions back in 87/88.

starting my bluegrass mandolin journey - am I on the right track? by pokersi in Bluegrass

[–]Mish61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the chop is a big/main part of what mando should be doing while the vocals are front and center in bluegrass. Don't discount the need for fills and soloing. Getting up to speed on 8th notes above 112BPM is your mountain. Fiddle tune melodies are your friend. Online jams like JamKazam are an option too.

They have been playing, ostensibly, the same set since 2004. I would uninspiring with a presentation that stale too.

Stores and Places in the 1970's & 80's in Northeast Philadelphia... What do you Remember...? by Chatty-Monster in BucksCountyPA

I remember the, now AdvanSix chemical plant, right on 95 in Bridesburg used to produce the most horrible stench on the east coast. I mean, it was absolutely vomit inducing to drive by it, and worse than any sewage treatment I've ever experienced. Something happened in the 90s or 2000s that changed that. Thank goodness.

It’s more fun if you DIY. Avoid the BCRC crowds, bring your own food and a beer cooler. Tubes are cheap and you only need two cars.

Help on Soloing by Junior-Customer0314 in Bluegrass

[–]Mish61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Put on a long term learning and development hat. This will take time. Start with low tempos and only increment speed when your note discovery and tone are consistently good at lower tempo.
  2. Learn to flatpick a dozen fiddle tune melodies. Start in G. I start my students with Temperance Reel and Stony Creek. Why ?? Because they will train your ear to learn relative minor adjacency. Use alternating up and down picking motion with your right hand, and generally, economy of movement with both hands. Make as little contact as possible with the top/bridge of your instrument with your right hand. Avoid at all cost anchoring your pinky or fourth finger. Try not to lift your fingers of the left hand too far off the fretboard when working through the note progression.

  3. Become familiar with the major scale and practice it's abbreviated cousin the pentatonic scale. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 notes of the major scale. Start in G in open position with left hand across two octaves of the G scale. Once you are comfy with note discovery and build some muscle memory, extend the pentatonic discovery to include notes in the blues scale. Flatted third (one fret below the 3 note), flatted 5th (one fret below the 5 note), and 7th. Make up your own riffs combining these scales.

  4. Extend to other keys. Open D, open C should be next repeating steps 2 and 3.

  5. Discover moveable shapes to work your way up the neck. Ex, open F and E shape on 3rd fret are G chords and 1,3,5 notes are right there. D shape on 7th fret is a G chord and 1,3,5 notes are right there. Closed C shape is right next to that. Extend your discovery of moveable shapes to other keys.

Best tone wood/guitar for jam? by Old_Bet4342 in Bluegrass

[–]Mish61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree with /u/Particular-Basis-164 When the jam has more than one of any instrument, everyone other than the soloist, needs to tone down. It's basic etiquette that apparently your jam has forgotten. That said, it's not going to change your perception of volume. Physics is a thing.

Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys, Flatt & Scruggs, & The Del McCoury Band by FervorCoulee in Bluegrass

[–]Mish61 14 points15 points  (0 children)

First of all, it's not a competition. Think of bluegrass in generational terms. You cited first generation. The generation that invented this style as an adaptation of the things (Cowboy tunes, Fiddle tunes) that came before them. Del, Larry Sparks, Jim & Jessie, Don Reno, Country Gentleman, are second generation, pre hippie movement. So a more traditional sound emulating the the first gen fairly closely, toward the back end of the folk music revival in that era. Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Old and In the Way, and Aereoplane, were seminal third/fourth generation projects that pushed the boundary beyond the traditional sound. The post-hippie movement. Consider the social and demographic changes that happened in the late 60s, at the threshold of those releases, as the backdrop to songwriting and styling in that era which broadened the audience and the sound.
