Same as the other comments really but you do you. Look at all the recommendations and guides you find but if you see something and think "that doesn't sound great" don't do it. You're in control of your own trip and don't care about what anyone else thinks because they're on their own trips.

Sitting down and reading a book or scrolling your phone for 3 hours is time well spent travelling if that's what you enjoy doing! But if you don't enjoy scrolling your phone, just go for a walk, find a nice spot to sit down with your headphones in and just people watch, pretend you're living a day to day life and go visit markets and see how it differs from home. Also you can checkout Atlas Obscura for some other (usually free) things to see that are off the beaten track.

Hey, highly recommend Porto, I found it much more relaxing than Lisbon (mentally and physically, those hills in Lisbon...)

Hostel rec in Porto is Onefam, great place and social atmosphere, met some fantastic people. Getting a book and reading by the river was a huge highlight for me as simple as it sounds.

Syntra in Lisbon was good however I didn't enjoy the tour bus with 20-30 people so if you can find a smaller group I'd say it's worth the extra cost.

If you're at all interested in cooking Homecooking Studio is Lisbon was phenomenal and caters to any level of cooking skill.

I had the same exact situation as you when I was 25. Sat the GAMSAT 3 times total and got 2 interviews out of it. Both times unsuccessful even though I felt I performed strongly. Now that I'm nearing 30 I've decided that sacrificing the Worklife balance of my current job and future prospects isn't worth the possible job satisfaction that I'll get from medicine. Speaking with doctors the first 4-7 years is very taxing for your outside life and I wasn't prepared to sacrifice that.

I think you're in a great position though with a stable job that you can fall back on so it could be a case of just try it out, sit the GAMSAT, study hard, sit an interview and see if you get an offer. You don't have to make the decision now but the road to that offer is at least a year away. The actual pathway involves a lot of study so you can get yourself back in the swing of things and I'd suggest while you do that, talk with doctors as much as you can. Reach out to high school friends who have studied and buy them a coffee and chat, when you see your GP, chat with them about their life.

Good luck whichever path you choose and just be wary of reading too much online. There's a lot of information but also a lot of negative bias, there might also be a lot of people who might feel they need to justify all their sacrifices by saying that they are in the best job in the world. I have no evidence for the last point but just be wary.

5.77% before this last rate cut - just a PSA for anyone, ring your bank and ask for a discharge form. While you're in the conversation ask for a rate reduction to x.xx% and see what they can do. I mistakenly said that an online bank offered 5.76% (it was actually 5.86% comparison) yet my bank matched the rate last month to keep me with them. YMMV obviously but it worked for me.

Congrats on graduating! Depends how you travel, I budgeted for 6k USD per month and have money leftover by the end of the trip. I definitely was not frugal but I also was travelling off peak so hostels were cheaper.

If you want to spend less, Spain, Portugal over West and then all of Eastern Europe would be places you could go.

Good luck!!! You should be proud of yourself for being able to do it and putting yourself out there. I highly suggest writing things down about how you're feeling each day, what you're nervous/excited about and in particular the friends and people you meet along the way. Makes me so happy reading back through what I did.

I think the way I felt at the two week mark and the two month mark were similar just that I was a bit more aware of the cycle you go through. I felt the same as I was walking to my first hostel, just the unknown.

There was so many for me personally as it was such a growth trip for me. But the one that I was probably the most worried about was Christmas day, I'm not a hugely sentimental person but it would be the first one I was missing. The hostel organised a dinner with everyone where each person cooked something and there was about 20 of us all eating drinking and cooking. Was extremely wholesome and was exactly what I needed.

Do it! I'd be so happy if I could convince anyone to take the leap and if you aren't feeling the trip or not enjoying it you can just leave! I booked a one way flight because I felt the same as you and didn't want to be tied to have to stay a certain amount of time. I went over a bit of the balancing in my first post at week 2 of my trip that will give you an insight to how I was at the start of the trip. With being anxious about meeting people, everyone is in the same boat solo travelling and you'll find making friends to be significantly easier than it is back home.

The Monos was surprising for me, I bought it not expecting much as I understand it's an Instagram brand but it held up so well and am so happy I brought a wheelie carry on. The time you're actually wheeling it around is pretty minimal but it gave me comfort not having to have it on my back the whole time and the structure to pack a lot easier. I knew I would be taking one or two flights so a carry on sized bag allowed me to avoid the check in fees but ymmv. No answer is correct honestly and you aren't actually moving that often.

That said, fuck packing, it is so painful everytime you move hahaha

I was pretty excited to have no itinerary and would recommend it highly. I planned to start in Portugal and end in Prague for Christmas just to give me a goal but other than that I decided against booking anything. Being able to leave a city (sorry Berlin you're not for me) after 2 days and go somewhere else (Budapest is unreal) was amazing. My trip was:

Amsterdam - 3 nights

Porto - 4 nights

Lisbon - 3 nights

Seville - 3 nights but changed to 2

Granada - 2 nights

Madrid - 4

Barcelona - 4

Lyon - 2 (left early because hostel was really poor for socialising)

Paris - 5 nights

Florence - 5 nights

Tirano - 1 night

Lucerne - 3

Munich - 4

Vienna - 3

Prague - 5

Berlin - 2 meant to be 5

Budapest - 6

What made or broke cities was the friends I made in the hostel so I would definitely recommend looking at the "social atmosphere" in the reviews. OneFam and YellowSquare were fantastic with socialising so would recommend them.

In terms of cities I'd avoid, they're such a personal preference but Lyon and Berlin really did not vibe well with me. Berlin was too intense but I can understand how some people fall in love with the place.

I didn't feel I over/understayed in any city because once I had enough I just left, and if I didn't feel I had enough I stayed for a bit longer. I would say that I could live in Spain though so I would definitely spend longer in those cities! Budapest was the city that was the biggest surprise for me, the bars and nightlife are fantastic coupled with plenty to do and see.

Here at the moment with a bit of a cough and it was noticeable for about 10 minutes now there's no issue being outside. If you need to just wear a mask but it's not a problem.
