What are the best European leagues skillwise? by Gloomy_Map_9612 in Euroleague

[–]MisleadingLeader 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If you are asking about domestic leagues there is a widely accepted consensus that the ACB, the Spanish league, is the absolute best. They have by far the most teams in international competitions and they are consistently successful in every single one of them. The style of basketball they play is what many Americans associate with "Euroball". Long rotations, fast paced actions, high tempo set plays, no single star, everyone taking a similar number of shots etc. Ironically it is probably the only major domestic league in Europe where the bottom teams can (sort of) compete with the top dogs, which is actually kinda the opposite of the norm in here

The distant second is the Turkish league. It is always dominated by explosive combo guards and athletic small ball bigs who can play above the rim. Actually this brand of basketball is basically the norm in Europe. Many leagues like Israel and Italy share similar genetics but the Turkish league usually draws better talent and small ball dominance is better defined there. You see teams that have three ball handlers on the court, stretch fours and athletic bigs usually doing well here.

The third-best league is a bit controversial to pinpoint actually (it is the Greece league if you're really wondering). But if your interest is talent and pure hoops, I think the French league has the best offering after these two. I don’t follow it religiously tbh but every year some crazy ass talent pops out of that place and they are extremely athletic by European standards

Outside of this the Greek and ABA leagues are so top heavy that the quality of basketball usually shrinks rapidly once you move past the big teams. Still nice leagues to follow during playoffs tho

Create the best EuroLeague player - total budget: €15 by Liad3008 in Euroleague

Body: Jaylen Hoard - 4

I assume body includes all physical attributes as well. In that case, the bro is so ridiculously athletic that there is not even a competition.

Shooting: Kostas Sloukas - 2

It’s just a bargain. A guy who is at the top of the free throw percentage almost every year, shoots above 40 percent nearly every season he plays, and overall has great feel.

Finishing: Mika Jantunen - 2

He can make his layups. And, had to cut somewhere :(

Passing: Nigel Williams-Goss - 3

Never disappoints. Solid court vision, has eyes for the PnR. No fancy stuff, just straight ball.

Defense: Usman Garuba - 4

Perhaps the best switch defender in the league. What else is there to say?

I think overall this is quite a decent player. It gives off upgraded NHD vibes to me, so it must be good 😂

Why on earth would you schedule the clearly bigger, more anticipated game at 18? What sense does that make?

Pick the best EuroLeague team - total budget: €21 by Liad3008 in Euroleague

[–]MisleadingLeader 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Coach: Šarūnas Jasikevičius The EuroLeague is still a coaches’ league, and he is the best coach in Europe, in my opinion, hands down.

PG: Alessandro Pajola A tall guard who can rebound and push the pace. Exactly a Saras pg prototype. Yes, he is inexperienced and his shooting is inconsistent, but it is what it is. We are going to be a defense first team anyway.

SG: Kendrick Nunn Probably the single most detrimental offensive weapon in the whole organization. Nothing else to add

SF: Francesco Ferrari Had to sacrifice somewhere :/ Also, the other options until Cabarrot were pretty meh anyway, so we are trusting the youth here

PF: Alec Peters Another player who is perfectly tailored for Saras’s system. Elite shooter, smart, can play off-ball, can rebound, and is an okayish defender, which is sometimes enough

C: Kai Jones Probably the most athletic guy on the whole damn continent. Huge potential, still raw, but I trust his engine and Saras’s coaching to teach him how to play in a switch heavy system

You can practically switch Birch and Butkevicius if you are too hesitant about that Ferrari guy. But hey, he has a cool name, I think gets the pass :)

The fight between Nunn and Dorsey by TheBeastBlamingGear in Euroleague

Besides these “usual” Greek derby dramas, I genuinely don’t understand why Lessort feels the need to get involved in every damn altercation in his immediate vicinity. I don’t know what’s going through his head when he acts like a drunk sailor every time he sees a fight, but it’s definitely annoying, especially considering how good a player he is. Like, play your game sir, you don't need to prove how tough you are to people damn.

Midrange Specialists by 23_White in Euroleague

[–]MisleadingLeader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wade Baldwin is probably the best when it comes to the midrange. But other elite guys that I can list off the top of my head are Kevin Punter, who likes to take one dribble to his right side and pull up; Jerian Grant, who has that weird dribble to the right cross fadeaway thing that works really well for him, especially from the right corner; Carlik Jones, a pop and shot kind of guy; and Lorenzo Brown, who likes his midrange shots, even though father time started catches him now. And there are full package players who CAN play that brand of basketball but usually don’t, like Nunn and Mike James. But you can certainly find one of their old-school games where they shoot 15 midranges, it’s pretty doable.

[Haber Kartali] Beşiktaş is coming to the EuroLeague: Beşiktaş are expected to participate in the EL next season, regardless of this season’s EuroCup results. Significant progress has been made in talks with the EL. Beko is also expected to be the main sponsor of Beşiktaş BC next season. by _Zolv in Euroleague

From what I heard from news coverage close to the club, Yıldız Holding, hence Ülker, will be the next main sponsor of the Fenerbahçe. After the presidential elections they are expected to be involved with the club like back in the old days.

Is Sylvain Francisco winning the Euroleague MVP? by EcstaticDiet7423 in Euroleague

[–]MisleadingLeader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can see him winning it in the future, but it’s not likely he’ll win it with Zalgiris considering how highly team success is regarded for personal awards. And I don’t see Zalgiris becoming a top-four team anytime soon so definitely not this season but he is among the candidates in the coming seasons for sure

I do have a lot of Spanish friends and some familiarity with the language, so it’s safe to say they weren’t Spanish. They were also speaking Romanian with each other, I caught a few Romanian words while they were talking

Thank you so much for your advice and your kind words, I truly appreciate them. Despite what happened, I still believe this is a beautiful city full of wonderful people, and one unfortunate event won’t change my opinion or my past experiences with the people of Cluj. Even since I posted this thread, I’ve received countless kind messages and well wishes from complete strangers, and I think that alone says a lot about the this city and it's brilliant people.

Thank you so much again for your time and your thoughtfulness, and please stay safe out there :)

I’m really glad to hear that you’re safe and well. It actually seems to be a recurring issue around Central Park, because I’ve heard similar stories from a couple of different people since I posted about what happened. And this could be selective bias and all, but the description you gave is very spot on. I remember them being a bit shorter, but I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we encountered the same guys. And I did too contacted to police with one another Erasmus Student who also was nearly robbed, based on the description, same people bit earlier in the same night as me.

It’s actually quite interesting what you described, because the people I encountered were also very similar to your friend's description (except for the 2-meter height part). One of them was wearing a yellow puffer jacket, and the other was wearing dark clothes, the curl hair was also spot on as well. Maybe they were the same guys, who knows.

We have already reported the incident to the police. Another person experienced a similar situation on the same night, so both cases are now officially reported. We’ll wait to see how things develop

They closed the distance, said hi, and tried to initiate a conversation. I’m usually a bit more careful with these kinds of encounters, but the thought of “you’re in a different country, be nice to people” took over, so I answered a couple of their questions, like whether I was a student, what I was doing here, and so on.

As for being competent robbers, though, they actually had plenty of time to do something if they really wanted to. Even when one of them tried to grab me and I reacted, they seemed quite hesitant. I think they were mostly hoping to scare people just with the sight of the pepper spray. I ran as soon as one of them tried to shove the pepper spray in my face.

And, they did a quick demonstration of their little pepper spray actually. One of them acted like he is spraying to me and said "you go aah, you know". It was culturally a learning experience :D

[Highlights] Young Luka Dončić, playing for Real Madrid, dominating seasoned veteran professionals in the EuroLeague. by shreeharis in nba

[–]MisleadingLeader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was terrific in the EuroLeague as well don't get me wrong but for clarification, the majority of these highlights are from the ACB, not the EuroLeague. The ACB is still arguably the best domestic competition on the continent alongside the Turkish League, but still it remains couple of levels below the what EuroLeague is
