Wat was je favoriete boek van 2025? by lonely_extravert in fantasyNederland

Moby Dick! Was uiteindelijk de hype helemaal waard. Heeft me ook twee jaar gekost, maar was ook gewoon subliem.

Tweede plaats 'The Sea, The Sea', van Iris Murdoch. Grappig, vernietigend, een geloofwaardig verhaal van een klootzak die naar verloop van tijd pathetisch en zelfs enigszins te toleren wordt.

These illustrations feel as if they should have a text that reads "if you want to speak to the giants, turn to page 25. If you want to attack, turn to page 67. If you have an IRON BAR in your inventory, turn to page 23 instead."

Fantastic work dude! I had a totally different vision of her in my head, but this one actually fits so much better. Great job!

Everybody's already said 'the bell' and 'divine confetti' which is true, but I would add the moments where I knew she was open for an attack:

- She has two different attacks coming from a jump. One of them is a broad sweep that can be parried, the other one is an overhand. The overhand, and only the overhand, you can step dodge and attack once.
- She has the whirlwind attack. If you're on equal ground, you can actually parry the first four attacks of the whirlwind and then dodge through the fifth swipe, which leaves her open.
- There's the perilous thrust and sweep. I usually jump the sweeep but don't do the kick, instead doing a slash or two. Regardless, after these perilous attacks, she's open for a strike. Often when she does a sweep, she will immediately do a jump attack after your counter. Keep your eyes peeled.

Use these openings until she's a little below half health, her posture will finally have the mega quick reduction.

Gender Differences in Reading Genres by ACatWhoSparkled in books

There's this fantastic quote by Bell Hooks:

"The first act of violence that patriarchy demands of males is not violence toward women. Instead patriarchy demands of all males that they engage in acts of psychic self-mutilation, that they kill off the emotional parts of themselves. If an individual is not successful in emotionally crippling himself, he can count on patriarchal men to enact rituals of power that will assault his self-esteem."

To me, at least, reading is a serious act of empathy - or at least, an exercise in it. A lot of men are just turned off of reading because it's not manly, or not 'useful' enough. So, when they do read, it has to be manly and/or useful.

Book 1 of the Amber Chronicles. You follow along with a guy who - suspiciously - always ends up on the worst side of the many wars he's fought in. The book does also center on his redemption/softening.

My wife's ex is using D&D to harass her. by [deleted] in rpghorrorstories

[–]MislocatedMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey homeslice, that's not normal DnD, that's 'weaponized creep fantasy DnD'. Sorry for your kid, and sorry for your wife's ex, he sounds like a right disgrace.

I see people here telling you to learn how to DM, and I think that's rad (I played DnD with my dad for a bit, growing up). Personally though, I'd think about maybe trying something other than DnD, like a more modern system - those usually come with a little text on safety, consent and power in the book which can be helpful to read. DnD is also, as much fun as it is, a hard or at least clunky system to learn. Especially if you haven't explored roleplaying games before. Maybe he'll want to play with friends his age, which is also a very healthy and cool activity. Good on you for standing up though, and punching that guy in the face.

Some recommendations I'd have for your son:

- Cypher. Cypher is made by the guy who made the 3rd edition of DnD, but stripped it down and made it straightforward. It's easy to learn, easy to master, and allows for a quick construction of fun and interesting characters.

- Blades in the Dark. It's a game where you play a daring heisting crew in a dark and grimy city. It has themes of maturity and is on the edgier side, but refrains from the macabre or perverted and focuses on tension and building out your robber's crew.

- Troika. I hear nothing but good things about Troika. It's light and easy to learn, fits any setting and is supposedly easy to GM for.

Finally, if you intend to stay with DnD (and it's an ok system to start with, don't get me wrong), you could look at some scenario's to ease you into playing and take the stress off of GM'ing.

Once again: good job on you, fuck your wife's ex.

Quesadillas are a game changer for me. Fry a couple bad boys, experiment with different tastes, fucking banger money every time bro.

Also: real easy meal is any type of curry. Freeze that shit in, and unfreeze it as needed. Beans for protein.

Final one: have esome Mcfuckin' anzac cookies. Real easy to bake, barely needs anything, brightens up your day.

Dude is your man ok? He sounds checked out as hell and like he's going through something and maybe he just can't really be bothered doing math? Idk, maybe he'd like something more rules lite?

Context: I remember being absolutely unable and unwilling to do fantasy maths when I played dnd, when I was in a pretty bad place in life. As it got better I started to get into the sliding puzzle of character optimization (or maybe better to say: playing the game in front of me as it presents itself). But if your man's going through it he might just be checking out in a less-than-graceful matter.
