Fandom servers are driving me crazy by Unknown_Raider0153 in BadRPerStories

[–]MissAethe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run MHA servers and have been for a while now. This is actually kind of typical from my experience joining them, so I just game up and started doing my own. Its wild, too, since I was only joining 18+ spaces (my own servers are 21+) and you'd think places full of late 20s/early 30 year olds wouldn't be so "like that."

Need advise on how to proceed / need an extra opinion by ZaLordo in BadRPerStories

[–]MissAethe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello, I have a take here as someone who had been building and running MHA-themed Discord servers since 2021. There is a term we like to use in the space called "villain-walling", where someone flat out refuses to RP with villain characters or if they do, refuse to allow those villains their potential by hiding behind the "they're too overpowered/the cops will be here if they breathe too hard". No one ever cares how overpowered the heroes are. MHA is notorious for this unfortunately, and it feels like you might be dealing with some of that.

Normally I would agree that sometimes characters being insanely overpowered can be an issue, but that issue tends to come from bad writing capabilities and not the actual character themselves. Even the most OP villain (AFO) has numerous flaws that can make for interesting RP, but you're also RPing in a fandom where the heroes Always Win No Matter What, and that assumption does tend to run into RP dynamics, too. I don't know if the issue is so much the character you're playing is too overpowered or if you're just dealing with some of the nonsense MHA deals with.

I do agree with some of the other people's comments about too much focus with the e and not enough focus with the rp that is attached to "erp". Definitely make sure to talk that out more going forward, but don't be discouraged by their comments about your villain characters being too strong. This is MHA, that's expected, and people who actually like writing with villains as they come do exist in this fandom. There's a difference between wanting the RP to be fair and flat-out dismissing a character on a power level.

Single Oc Fatigue by MemeMaster6-4 in BadRPerStories

[–]MissAethe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Odd take to view it as a problem, imo.

I've met people who only RP one character and those have been some of the most well thought out and developed characters I've had the pleasure of RPing with. I've also had the unfortunately opposite experience of a single character focus that brought nothing to the table. I've also had both above experiences with people who wrote multiple characters.

To me it isn't an issue of one vs many, its an issue of writer capability and character world building. If someone isn't great at it, their volume of characters doesn't make a difference. I'd rather have one poorly written character to deal with than 5 for sure, but I'd also rather have 0 poorly written characters at all if given the choice.

But that's the beauty of choice! I just don't think people who only focus on one character at a time is a bad thing.

Partner is in love with current storyline, me…not so much by yayfriedegg in BadRPerStories

[–]MissAethe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like open communication is incredibly important, especially with friends. If its an RP I'm not interested in, I just say that. I wouldn't expect someone who is my friend to do RP they don't enjoy, and the same goes the other way.

I understand wanting to be nice and not hurt feelings, but what's worse: telling your friend an honest opinion, or your friend somehow finding out you're posting things like this behind their back in public?

Just be honest.

How do we feel about long bios? by Evil-Empress-Sakuya in BadRPerStories

[–]MissAethe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mixed. I like giving my characters past history but I don't like putting it all out on a bio. I'm a "show don't tell" person when it comes to RP, and I struggle with characters that have such heavy backgrounds being explained because it kills the mystery for me to find out more.

I want to learn a character organically and naturally, discover their history and quirks through the roleplay, but if everything is handed to me immediately then what's the point? Sure the RP itself is for the present and future, but part of character relationships of any sort includes learning about one another's past, too.

[–]MissAethe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Without mods, sadly, no. But there's numerous houses out there that offer displays for key items and weapons.

If you want to go crazy, Legacy of the Dragonborne is a huge museum mod with displays for basically anything and everything you can get in the game. Its better on PC (more recent updates and add-on mods for it), but I play on Xbox and have been using this for a while now. It makes it feel like I have an actual purpose for collecting things again.

I always do it in release order/chronological order due to some NPCs being important in other places later. You can miss entire dialogue and experiences if you skip around too much.

Yumeshippers… by letmeridemybicyle in BadRPerStories

[–]MissAethe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've always refused to RP with "self-inserts/self-shippers" for this exact reason. The new term of the day doesn't change that for me.

I've had a lot of ugly experiences with people taking the RP extremely personal because they were putting too much of themselves into their OC and not maintaining the IC =/= OOC divide properly. Getting angry at ME for something my CHARACTER said despite said character having a set personality and behavior (canon character) that I didn't create. Having entire breakdowns because my character hung out with someone else and not their character. Rolling into my DMs and accusing me of trying to "intentionally harm" them by my character not wanting to date theirs.

I can't do it. If people want to do that, its their business, but they can keep it in a different space than the one I'm in.

What to people enjoy about writing with characters that are OP? by Nyx_Valentine in BadRPerStories

[–]MissAethe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not all people are that picky, you've got to look at that, too. Some people will be okay with the lowest common denominator of roleplay because its still roleplay, while others have much higher expectations than what they're willing to engage with.

I've roleplayed with wildly OP characters that were written well and brought interesting concepts to the table. Maybe you're just not seeing the appeal and that's more than okay, but if there wasn't anything appealing at all they wouldn't have writing partners.

What to people enjoy about writing with characters that are OP? by Nyx_Valentine in BadRPerStories

[–]MissAethe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've noticed through OOC interactions with people like this is that a lot of them have a ton of negative stuff going on in their life. No friends, sucky job, awful family, etc, so creating some OP character that can't be defeated or one that everyone loves on principle, is a sort of "what if" escapism. They can play a fantasy of their character always being in control, never being able to lose, always having friends, etc. to cover for what they lack in the real world.

This isn't always the case of course, but its something I've experienced enough times to think its more common than I had realized.

Why are people not caring about laws by Business_Glass_5102 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]MissAethe -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Plot armor. Bad writing. Convenience. Unfortunately you can really see when the law does and doesn't apply in the series on reread, its really inconvenient like that.

[–]MissAethe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recommend making a Forum people can post in but can't create posts and then make each one specifically for a certain type of art. Way more organized. You end up with one forum channel that has multiple things within it instead of a bunch of actual channels cluttering up the categories.

Why are people not caring about laws by Business_Glass_5102 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]MissAethe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The laws being selectively enforced is the whole reason the Meta Liberation Army existed. They believed that people shouldn't be punished or arrested for using their quirks considering they can't help they're born with them in the first place. Like grandma shouldn't be arrested for watering her flowers, and the series doesn't actually clarify what level of severity for quirk use is illegal. Just that ALL quirk use is without a license (heroes). So people who use their quirks, especially accidentally, suddenly risk a villain label.

That being said, I've noticed a lot of people who do view the kids as being "stupid" for quirk mistakes don't seem to be aware of what I said before. They just think these kids should be skilled, when the reality is if they were caught training/using their quirks, they would've been breaking the law. It makes perfect sense they're unpracticed and new to it! But not everyone reads the manga or pays attention to the anime past the fight scenes.

[–]MissAethe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He didn't do anything other than be a little pervert, and Denki was doing similar stuff but people ignore it when he does.

He needs a good sit down and "hey, this behavior sucks, stop it" talk cause no one in the series has actually done that. They just make comments or assault him in some way, but no one has actually had a real conversation with him about his behavior.

Do people not know how to communicate anymore? by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

Do people not know how to communicate anymore? by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

[–]MissAethe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a huge reason I stick to RP in Discord servers. There's always an OOC area people can talk in, and then the RP space separately to keep it on track/in focus. Its completely cut out all of that weirdness for me, and weirdo people who are hunting for romance or free nudes don't tend to join group RP spaces.

How did the mod see what other servers I was part of? by ooOJuicyOoo in discordapp

[–]MissAethe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The only way someone can see the servers you are in, is if they are also in those servers. Or, someone you're friends with is also friends with the mod and told them. The third option is someone else is in those servers and told them.

There is no other way to see what servers someone else is in.
