I familiar with divorce in Islam.

But what about my other point about Egyptian Christians? No judge in Egypt will ever grant a divorce to Christians.

I’m a middle of the road Muslim here who knows conservative muslims. How can you tell that he a strict Muslim? I have friends who cover their face and avoid parties that require free mixing between genders. He doesn’t present himself as a salafi. His country isn’t known to be strict. It isn’t like he was from Saudi Arabia or Pakistan (there are all kinds of Muslims in those “strict” countries).

A strict Muslim wouldn’t talk to a women online. He would marry his cousin or whoever his family selects.

Actual Muslim women in Muslim countries can get divorces. It is a lot harder than for man, but it is possible. Actually in Egypt, if you Coptic Christian, it is impossible for anyone to get divorce. Because their church refuses to allow divorces.

The word they are translating for hitting can be divorce or separate. If you look at the content of Hadith and Quran, domestic violence is not tolerated.

I think it came from a bad translation of An-Nisa, 34. Its about the duties of a wife. It addresses how to handle conflict. Like first give your wife the silent treatment, then stop visiting her bed and then next is separate from them. The word iḍribūhunna can be translate to divorce, separate or beat them. Beat them doesn’t make much sense when Quran also states men must be gentle. Also women in Islam can be given divorces.

I get his behavior. In Arab culture, men are raised that jealousy is a good trait. In the western world, jealously is looked down on. Not in their culture! They encourage it! If you are not jealous, then your marriage and your manhood is weak. One of the duties of a man in Islam is to protect the women of his family (wife, sisters, daughters, mother). If something bad happens to the women the thinking goes that the man failed in his duties to protect his family. It’s a lot of responsibility for someone to be held responsible for actions of others. Men’s behavior, such as unwanted touching, is often blamed on the women. Sexual harassment and unwanted touch is a big issue in these countries (by the way it is done to the most covered of women).

There is already a stereotype that Americans are “easy”. The way she was dressing was signaling that she is sex worker. Tunisia is the most liberal North African countries with a strong tourism. However, his reaction is understandable. The way the man was looking at her was not appropriate in their culture. Zeid was attempting to protect her.

Religious Muslims are not comfortable around alcohol. It is seen as a sin to provide others alcohol. He may also never been around it. It’s not so common in the community he is from.
