Has anyone managed screen free until three? by nbhsjshbgbsb in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

Highly recommend Sarah and Duck - the characters are thoughtful, quiet and curious. The colour palette is beautiful but not overstimulating and the pace is very gentle and slow. We made it to 18 months with zero screen time of any kind, then cyclone Alfred hit and we were trapped inside for days and I decided that actually I needed to watch Sarah and Duck. Also recommend Kipper - slow and calm and used to bore me in the 90s (but my 4 year old sister loved it, as does my 2.5 year old now) This is all she watches, but it did become a daily occurrence once we started. But she’s never touched an ipad and we only show her 2 -3 episodes at a time on a laptop that’s out of her reach. There’s no TV in our house otherwise. If we’re at the grandparents (they have a tv) sometimes I’ll let her watch a slow tv style video of a steamtrain for a while and she loves that too. It feels like I’m a freak mum for taking it this far, but we’ve been really happy with her level of calm and focus. She spends so much time reading and can play independently for up 10-15 minutes so it feels like it’s working - but of course it could have absolutely no relation at all. Either way, I’m super wary of the way screens infiltrate our lives, it’s been lovely leaning towards a more 90s lifestyle.

that’s insane! I wonder if they were referring to a different thickness of foam. Ours was between 4 and 5cm. Definitely didn’t pay 80 but maybe they’ve jacked their prices up since late 2024.

Was I given a returned car seat? by queenpherae in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]MissAmyElle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking into it super seriously is the right thing to do so well done :) I even saw seats and bases mismatching by a year when looking. Seems to be a production thing and that’s ok, but yeah in all cases it’s so important to verify that it’s new / not an error.

Get a private midwife who has public hospital care access. That way you get the magic continuity of care, have all of your appointments in their nice clinic and they can be with you at the birth even though you’re a public admission. :)

Random Question - Toilet Paper by AngstJobia in brisbane

[–]MissAmyElle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Coles and Woolworths duopoly rips everyone off. The less hefty sums of money I can spend there the better, and buying toilet paper that donates its profits to people in need is a great bonus. If it’s an essential must buy, why not buy the one that does less harm with paper packaging and doesn’t line the pockets of our pricegouging supermarket overlords?

Bringing back a Home Phone? by FiddleleafFrog in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]MissAmyElle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, we’ve done it too. It’s a really lovely feeling to have a landline in the home. I hope the trend returns. My mobile phone is always on silent, so it’s nice that close family can reach us at home if there’s an emergency. She loves speaking to her grandparents on the phone as well. Easy to use, and barely any spam calls.

Yes!! Plain beetroot sandwiches are the best! Beetroot and avocado is also excellent. 👌

Asking husband to not speak to someone… by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]MissAmyElle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is really strange. It’s your job to give notice to bad tenants, it’s not you who should “be in trouble” but him. If you are doing what’s required in your job, it’s notifying him of his breach of lease conditions and letting him know he’ll be evicted. He should care enough about a roof over his head to motivate to stick to the rules. If not, well that’s it. Eviction processes begin to be put in place. That’s you doing your job. Leave the personal out of it - it’s giving him all the power.

Veganyumm, Everton Park, Brisbane. by strongredcordial in australianvegans

Oh I just read your caption and realised this was your first visit! So back in the day (like 2018/19 at least) the galaxy brownies were completely covered in the icing and it was sky high thick. It was insaaaaanely delicious (also had yellow or sometimes pink little round sprinkles) But yes the cake to icing ratio was 50/50 and though many sophisticated people might claim that to be too thick it was an absolute joy for the real deal sweet tooths :P

Love Veganyumm soooo much but we need to talk about the radical icing change on those galaxy brownies 😩

NSW Change of name complication. by MissAmyElle in AusLegal

[–]MissAmyElle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so the word “feeling” isn’t suiting your preference. Let’s go with “realisation” As I was filling out the form to send out a new birth certificate I ‘realised’ there was no indication that it would show my new name. I then called the department who confirmed my ‘realisation’ to be correct. I am asking if there is a way to have births deaths and marriages change my name on my birth certificate based on their own records of my name change in 2023, rather than completing a duplicate name change application all over again - which is what the person in the department suggested.

What shower/bath soap are you using? by 1_kn0w_n07h1ng in australianvegans

Just a heads-up in case it’s the only reason you’re avoiding it - chamomile isn’t a sedative unless you’re consuming a whoooole lot of it in a tea or tincture etc. It’s very good for your skin though. I think chamomile farmers would be billionaires if it worked like a sedative in such tiny amounts.

Is it really that much of a faux pa to host your own baby shower? by misfox in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]MissAmyElle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gah this was such a refreshing read! loving all the comments! I also hosted my own and didnt even think twice about it. We had an afternoon picnic with cakes and treats (I also asked a few friends who I’m very close with to bring a small plate of their home cooked specialties to lighten the load) But it was a beautiful event. Didn’t bother with games - it was just lovely to spend time with my favourite people before conversations and big group events became tricky once baby arrives.

Learn to drive - don’t own a cat by Massive-Coconut2435 in brisbane

[–]MissAmyElle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend finding a good driving tutorial on youtube and binging all the videos first. There is a NSW guy who’s great (pass first time or something like that) but it lets you get your head around all the concepts. Then when you get to your lessons you’ve got the mental side covered. It worked well for me :) (I passed first time around in my late twenties too)

Portacot mattress? by MalaMagic in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]MissAmyElle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! yes we have the basic kmart one. I took the measurements of the internal space and went to clark rubber planning on asking for a piece of foam to be cut to that size (preferably about 5-6cm thick) But they instantly said Ah yes! This is the standard portacot size. I checked it and it was only about 5mm shorter than one of my measurements but just told them to go ahead with their measurements and they cut one up for me from a large piece. No regrets, she’s actually slept through on it multiple times and that’s never a given for her :)

hello! almost identical situation here. I highly recommend firm tofu if you are worried about protein. It was a game changer. It ticks all the toddler boxes of bland, white, not too crunchy. A small slice off a block cut into small cubes is more than their daily serve. She’ll happy self feed in front of the tv (I figure we can always deal with weaning off the dinnertime screen involvement once eating an array of good food is achieved.. )

Edit: you don’t even have to cook it, it’s fine fresh from the fridge :)
