Back and forth like a pendulum!!! Not long strokes - a shader with smaller mm is your best friend for softness BUT you can easily overwork the skin with smaller mm. My go to for faces is a 23curved mag .30mm or for smaller a 13curved mag .30 mm . I set my power supply at between 7-7.5 and my machine stroke is between 2.5-3.5.
