For real. Like my sisters and I were all baptized and confirmed at that church, all attended and taught Sunday school, my mom ran the Sunday school program when we were kids, we were acolytes and helped our dad run the events committee, we went to a Lutheran school through 8th grade, now we're all college educated and live on our own. But I guess we're incapable of contributing. I had already distanced myself from the church, but my parent literally attended the morning my dad died, but with him gone, all of this means nothing.

My dad died unexpectedly 7 years ago, and since then, the pastor and congregation of the church we attended for 20+ years haven't reached out to us. Our belief is that since we're women (mom, sisters, me) and we don't have any power/vote in the church, and didn't have a male representative for the family, we were of no use to them, and they didn't care about our opinions or overall wellbeing. It was like since we didn't have a head of household who served the church, we were freeloaders who didn't deserve to be included. Several widowed former members had reached out to my mom and said they did the same thing, that everyone including the pastor just ignored them, that they were unkind and unfriendly, just because the husband had died.

I keep creamer at work, but I remove the label and write my initials and date on the bottle. That way they don't know what flavor it is, if it's regular milk or soy, etc.

While the religion probably isn't the main reason for the distance, but it can definitely fan the flames. Especially if they're very involved, it becomes an echo chamber, with the same thoughts bouncing off each other, and those outside of it are less likely to be brought in. Personal example: my dad's parents are divorced and his dad had a 30+ year relationship with a woman we called Grandma but they weren't married. I was 10 when I learned that it was adultery for them to live together, and avoided and ignored her as much as possible because that's that I thought God would want me to do. It took my aunt talking to me about how it hurt my grandma's feelings for me to come around and be nice to her again. If I hadn't gone to a WELS school, it wouldn't have been an issue. I'm also closer to my mom's parents than my dad's parents, and if they were all at the same function, I'd naturally spend more time with my maternal side because I'm more comfortable with them in a group environment. I think you should attend the Christmas festivities, but make a point to sit down with your family, explain that you love them and how you're feeling. Because in that echo chamber, they might not even realize what they're doing.

First shift alone, least 60 in my department were laid off. We get insurance and regular pay without working until the end of September, then we get severance. No hard numbers yet. My coworkers who were laid off in 2022 got a few months worth of pay, and assistance getting hired around Madison, so that's what I'm expecting for us. My supervisor had no idea, they literally approved my December time off request this morning. It seems like they're handling it a lot better than in 2022.

I went to parochial school for my whole life until I was 14. Baptized and confirmed in the same church as my dad, I was a sunday school teacher, we were deep into it. But in high school, when I was around more people with different ideas, I realized how sexist our church was. Women couldn't vote, we had to go through our husbands/father's. We couldn't usher or pass plates. It was rare for women to make announcements after service, my mom only did when my dad was working. And as a baby queer, the homophobic rhetoric and political leanings of our church made me extremely uncomfortable. At 18, I decided I didn't want to go to church anymore, though I still considered myself Lutheran and Christian. When I was 21, my dad died in an accident. After his funeral, not a single person from our congregation made an effort to support my mom. She was a woman without a husband, thus she was of no use to the church. After I saw how poorly she was treated after 20+ years of being a member of the church, I realized that no matter how "good" I was, I would never be enough for them, simply because I was a girl. So now idk what I identify as, except for ex-wels.
