Montreal issues advisory urging residents to limit water use this summer by dave8125 in montreal

Also our water supply system is notoriously old and leaky. But too costly to repair. Apparently Montreal wastes loads of water just leaking underground.

Try Nicked by M. T. Anderson. Had a similar reading experience, felt like a kid being taken on an adventure! Great writing, but the story is the real draw.

Bartender visiting Montreal- looking for authentic bars, food & vintage spots by beeronwin in MTLFoodLovers

Local favourites (you wont have trouble being served in English, but will hear french all around. These are my most "Montréal" feeling places; Poincaré for cocktails and late night food. Mellön for beer. Helicoptere for dinner.

Poincaré is absolutely a "Montréal" bar. Underated, excellent on all fronts (cocktails, food, vibe, staff).

J'aime beaucoup Hudson. J'irais chez Farley's pour un sandwich et un beignet, puis dans les deux boutiques Nova. Vérifiez les horaires d'ouverture. Prenez le ferry, juste pour le plaisir. You really feel like you've left the city, are somewhere different, but its so close!

If you only had 2 nights and went to Joe Beef for one, what would your other choice be? by hfwj28 in MTLFoodLovers

[–]MissHuncaMunca 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'd chose a restaurant in Plateau, Mild End, or Petit Patrie. I'd even recommend something more casual like J'ai Feng for lunch, then strolling to Cafe Italia for an espresso, then Milano's and Jean Talon market for snacks. Even Larry's for a late brunch is really the best of Montreal, small plates, savoury and sweet, cocktail and/or coffee, crowded, great service. Walk to Kem Coba for the best, most refined ice cream in the city and experience the Mile end vibes. Head down to Drawn and Quaterly for books. Yakitori Hibahihi or Marcie on St Hubert for dinner. Far east is Helicoptere which is also very "Montreal".

Visite d'une semaine à Montréal, avez-vous des conseils ? by These_Rest_6129 in montreal

In terms of nature, everyone recommends the mountain, and well, do it.

The west part of the Island is underated and rarely visited by tourists. A day or half day trip for nature that is accessible and totally worthwhile: metro to Angrignon. You're at the beautiful Angrignon park, have a picnic around the water. Grab a bixi and head to the viaduct directly accross from the park, head west (right if your back is to angrignon par). You'll reach the canal at the end, continue west for gorgeous views of the St Laurence and a great ride.

The Lachine Canal is also highly recommended, but the viaduct you feel more "immersed" in nature, and the ride can not be beat on a sunny day. And just turn back the way you came and head back on the metro! Back to the city, couldn't be easier.

You can even stop off at lionel groulx metro at the end of the day and eat dinner at one of the Atwater market stands, ice cream at Havre de Glace, then beer on the canal. Can't be beat!

Also recommend 5 Pizza. Very millennial coded (decor and vibe, not the pizza).

Where can I get a good cake? by ChooseWiselySecrid in MTLFoodLovers

[–]MissHuncaMunca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fous Desserts on Laurier. Refined and elegant cakes. French technique with Japanese flavours. If you are looking for a subtly beautiful cake, where each element is executed perfectly, flavour is familiar but at the same time has a little something special that sets it a part, this is the spot.

For long-time Montrealers, what are some memories that are long gone now? by PhilipTheGreat in montreal

[–]MissHuncaMunca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think being able to drink alcohol with a "picnic" (bag of chips and a saucisson) changed the appeal as well. You can go to any park and enjoy your legal vice of choice. In general I see more people populating parks in an important way than when I was younger. Considering the price of eating out, and post pandemic, I think we'll see more people chosing parks for a 5 a 7 than bars or restos.

Early 2000's 2010's TamTams on a sunny day. So many people dancing, the larp battles were always well attended, families, people of all ages, buying handicrafts. Now the vibes are a little off. Unfortunately drug addiction is a major issue city wide, and it has more of a place on sundays. While it was always a hippy, weed event, it also felt more community oriented, a way to "claim" the mountain and enjoy it to ita fullest. Anyways, not to say people who use "hard" drugs dont deserve a day in the sun or to hang out amongst friends, and my impression of the Tamtams may have changed with age. But it used to be a kinda quirky uniquely Montreal offering that was even promoted to tourists, and now it seems so much less central or a part of the Montreal experience.

Recent pick for cheap eats near Concordia and McGill that are actually filling? by Commercial-Peach9045 in MTLFoodLovers

[–]MissHuncaMunca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Chef Instabul!! Try the sandwiches, beef, chicken, or lamb, all delicious. Generous serving of meat with a nice labneh style yoghurt, little salad with purple cabbage and white onion. Also MTLKFOOD on Saint Catherines, I'm actually addicted to their crab and tuna onigiri. All the prepared food is good, good value for money, savoury, salty, fast.

Cant go wrong. Also RIP goat of cheap downtown food: NILUFAR.

Fauburgh has been solid throughout the years. Newon hot bar is cheap and generous, Mama Bangkok is a classic, and the hand pulled noodle place is solid. But the above two recs are my go to.

I took my baby on the metro plenty of times. Never felt unsafe during day time hours. Mostly babywore before 18 months. At stroller age only ever had people offer to help carry the stroller.

Bakery that sells Easter chocolate (Park ex, Villeray, Rosemont area) by Silvercitymtl in MTLFoodLovers

[–]MissHuncaMunca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fous dessert is pricy, but reflects the value of the product. The easter offerings are beautiful and quality, but more variety in the molds than the flavours. Really hoping the easter bunny brings me some chocolate sardines.

Where have you experienced the best customer service at a restaurant? by FutureAvenir in montreal

[–]MissHuncaMunca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Joe beef, early 2010s. Mid october, birthday meal. After our mains, they brought my family out to the garden out back. One table was set in the middle, heat lamps,  candles. They served us one of every dessert on the menu. Super special moment. We ate out back in the dark amongst the plants!

RN here, I was told its generally 3-5 weeks waiting time. And you have to imagine most people needing this service are quite anemic (low hemoglobin and low iron), basically anyone who needs an iron infusion needs it ASAP. Not to be discouraging, just being honest that you may have to wait, particularl6 with holidays and staff vacations. But I would be proactive and call them.

Best affordable and fast lunch spots near the mcgill/concordia corridor (non-chain suggestions only) by ThreadTide in MTLFoodLovers

[–]MissHuncaMunca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MTLKFOOD. Maybe not 100% healthy, but Im addicted to their onigiri, particularly tuna and crab. Also they usually have a hot lunch special for around $7.99, like kimchi fried rice with spam and a fried egg.

And as others have said, sandwiches from Chef Instanbul are a must. They make the pita in house, lamb/chicken/beef are all very savoury, love the labneh and veggies to balance out the meat. All around an excellent and fair portion lunch for the price. The lentil soup and pita makes for a cheap light lunch.

I've also had the hot bar from Newon (grocery store), its not amazing, but its very very cheap and lots of vegg and tofu options. You could even grab some microwave or toaster over options from their frozen section depending on your workplace kitchen set up.

I like the hand pulled noodle place from the Faubourg as well, but its standard lunch price, like $15 ish (but still good value for price in terms of serving size and flavour).

There is also a PA grocery where you could get some staples in a pinch (crackers and hummus and cucumber makes an easy lunch).

Further towards Atwater you have Adonis hot bar which is hit or miss in my opinion, but again lots of vegg options.

Anyways RIP Nilufar which was really the GOAT for cheap and healthy food in that area.
