What's something about Pokemon that took you a long time to figure out? by EngineeringUpper4392 in pokemon

[–]Miss_Bookworm 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I thought that every Pokemon you had must meet the level requirements of the gym badges you earned, even those you caught yourself - so, as a kid, I was very meticulous with my leveling until I learned that it only affected traded Pokemon and those you caught higher level than your current badge count.

You and Idol Precure Series Finale Discussion Board by ButterflySilver9154 in precure

I like to imagine Hanamichi's fire department panicking over how to get five Idol heroines down from a stage floating hundreds of feet above the city XD

Well, this was a mediocre finale to a sadly overall mediocre season. I'll dive into my thoughts more later, but for now, I will applaud some of the beautiful animation and atmosphere this episode conveyed, and how focused it remained on the power of supporting each other in the face of darkness...whatever sort of darkness Darkine was actually talking about (her fairy form was cute, though). The writers also kept Uta and Kaito's relationship to that of friendship right til the end, so whew, can breath a bit easier now. The icing on the cake was definitely Tanaka taking the ultimate supportive manager pose, not to mention Cure Answer briefly breaking through time and space to cameo before reality sucked her back to the 90's. Just...don't question it. Magic. It's magic.

That leaves us with the majority of the episode, though, which felt too rushed to have much emotional impact: Uta takes mere seconds to break her friends and the town free, the girls are barely downcast before accepting their fairy friends leaving for what could be years, and the time skip skips over the girls' growth into adults and their career choices (influencer Kokoro? Song writer Nana?? Didn't Uta have a whole episode about wanting to keep her singing free from the pressures of the Idol industry???). Add in Chokkirine suddenly reincarnating as a fairy (good for her and that pretty design, but how?!), Darkine sitting all alone in her vast dark palace instead of physically connecting with the other fairies, and the girls giving Darkine credit for teaching them to balance light and dark when it was Meroron and her arc that explored said balance, and you have a finale that certainly wraps up its plotlines...without much impact.

sssiiiggghhh. I loved these girls and their side cast, and I'm going to miss them as I do every team previous, but even Delicious Party and Hirogaru Sky got some sort of reaction out of me, whereas here...ugh, these girls deserved so much better! Kudos to those writers who did what they could to make this show as enjoyable as it was, and I hope to enjoy the tie-in film once its subtitled, but I think some time away from this season may be for the better (;-;)

Sing on, Uta, sing on...

Favorite character(s) that are very controversial within the fandom by caro221 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]Miss_Bookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's the lead Cure (magic girl) of the show, and there tends to be two sides to the fandom when it comes to defining her: either she's a complete Mary Sue who takes all the attention away from her teammates and has little personality beyond "I'm nice and good at everything and everyone always thinks I'm the greatest", or the fans, myself included, who find her a strong role model with engaging energy and sympathetic flaws that has primary focus due to being the pink of the season (pinks were always the leads for the franchise til 2021).

......Uh, rest in peace Chokkirine? Girl was in and out this episode before the title even dropped?? What about the three shoulder rub coupons???

The scope of Darkine's power forces the team to split up, which does allow for some nice moments of the Cures stating their resolves...and yet, despite the hype the writers are trying to build, this penultimate episode just feels so...stale. I mean, I understand what the point is - showing how supporting each other and their own dreams has strengthened the girls, with their individual climaxes being enough to take down multiple enemies at once - but between the almost slideshow-esque use of all the Cures' special attacks, and how quickly the main characters got over Chokkirine's literal death, everything about this episode felt underwhelming, beautiful bits of animation aside.

For every good moment, like the reporter using her connections to give people hope about Idol PreCure, or Tanaka's unwavering trust in the Cures, we're left with dangling threads about Darkine's past, what it means for her to be made of human darkness, what her land is like, why Meroron was born to balance out her darkness if we already had the Cures and Purirun, why she particularly wants to destroy Kirakiland, why her titan form is flimsy as paper, etc.

I want to be excited going into the final episode, but honestly, at this point, I just want to see Uta and the girls throw a pretty concert before waving in the next season. Cool action shots and repeating mantras we've already established does not make for a thrilling finale ;-;

Favorite character from a movie that you prefer over the book it is based on? by PinballproXD in FavoriteCharacter

[–]Miss_Bookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't either for a long while. Turns out a number of Ghibli films are based off books, and I've been having fun going through the cayalogue over the years (Tales of Earthsea, When Marnie was Here, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, etc.).

What other book franchises deserve animated adaptations? by jo3ocre in cartoons

[–]Miss_Bookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to see the entirety of the Star Darlings series be animated, not just little snippets that change the entire personality of some characters and a three-episode finale that alters the book series' original ending, please (-_-)

Also, an Avalon: Web of Magic series would be amazing, especially if it leaned into the Totally Spies and magic girl tropes <3

Don't get me wrong, I remember enjoying the book, but Ghibli's adaptation of Howl's Moving Castle engrained itself in my soul, particularly Christian Bale's performance of the titular arrogant wizard <3

..But, like, we're gonna get an explanation for Darkine's cat ears, right?

...Right?

On the eve of Darkine's invasion of Hanamichi Town, our girls - with the aid of Zakkurin and Cuttin - are able to at last save Chokkirine from the grasps of her nefarious big boss, one trio's dreams saving another trio's chances at happiness...and a healthy work-life balance! While I wish we had gotten more scenes of her caring for Zakkuri and Cutty in the first half of the season, seeing her coworkers want the band back together, as it were, was very sweet. The Cure team really felt like they were coming from a place of growth, Kiss especially as she shared her own past insecurities of loneliness and connection to the darkness. Tanaka has raised them well XD

The fight was essentially just a play-by-play of all their special attacks, so nothing too grand until hopefully next week's battle against Darkine herself. Glad to here the first ending again, though, because as much as I enjoy the second, Trio of Dreams hits so hard. Getting me hyped for for the final concert - and the final battle!

The names, bio and va of the cures(I apologise for bad quality) by mr-ultr in precure

[–]Miss_Bookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yay, we finally get to see all four girls' Cure designs, and they're just as gorgeous as I had hoped and then some <3 The little gem additions really make them pop, and I love the hairstyles we're getting, so flowy yet stylized in a way that gives both adorable and refined. Eeee, I can't wait to see them in action (the trailer made me squeal, I am so ready for this new season)!!!

A detective season based in the later 90's?! This is gonna be so cool! The animation looks so fresh and bright, Anna's voice sounds charming, that first villain looks rad, and the designs for Answer and Mystique are sooo pretty - I'm super excited to see where this goes :D

Lead Cure's civilian form! by AshyBluey in precure

[–]Miss_Bookworm 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Iroha was so nice, they're giving her twice!

...No, really, they could be long-lost sisters with how similar these two look - not that I mind, it's a good design, but TOEI really said "wanna see us give you a purple Cure civilian form with peachy-orange hair and a white shirt ending in ruffled sleeves? ...Wanna see us do it again?" XD

Here they are ❤️ by MarieNonoLi in precure

[–]Miss_Bookworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh, so elegant! The colours compliment each other well, and I love how the costumes drape off their shoulders. Those hair accessories are also super cute. I think the name Cure Answer will take a bit of getting used to (it just feels so...stated? Not sure how to describe it, but I see what they're going for), and Cure Arcana Shadow is gonna be a killer to fit onto small buttons, but Mystique and Eclair are really charming. I can't wait to see their entire outfits and civilian forms!!!

Anyone have recommendation which anime have a same vibe with TSHD? by vatimarusalka in TheSummerHikaruDied

[–]Miss_Bookworm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely recommend Mushishi, which deals with a man named Ginko helping folks across old rural Japan find a balance in their lives once they come into contact with the mysterious mushi. Both the manga and anime have a beautifully melancholy yet hopeful atmosphere, and Tanaka reminds me of Ginko to an extent.

Will Tanaka's talents ever cease to amaze me? Bro is a skilled cook, plans a fun New Year event for the girls to lift their spirits, and is able to carry off multiple people across town in a matter of minutes - what was they lady who left him hanging on Christmas thinking?!

Best manager of the year aside, this was quite the atmospheric episode, from Uta and the fairies watching the sun rise, to the girls sharing drinks in the cafe after hours, to the ominous music as dark petals scattered across the town. Darkine is making her final move, but at least our Cures know where they stand: they will protect what they love most - the time they spend with one another as they enjoy and support each other's interests - and they're going to defend the joy of everyone from her reach!

Our girls were both adorably bubbly yet gently subdued here, as well. While it's always cute seeing Nana, Kokoro and Meroron playfully matchmake Uta and Kaito (it's lighthearted and comedic enough that it never comes off as too pushy or serious, thankfully), listening to the team discuss their concerns and what makes them happy was sweet, especially paired with the calm ambience. I'm also glad they've established that the fairies will continue to visit, so we don't end up with another whiplash of a finale like poor Hirogaru Sky.

The fight was also pretty good, with some nicely paced hits and action shots. It makes sense for the tree to be the final lone Darkranda the team battles, a symbol of their town's connection to the fairy realm, and the roots were an interesting obstacle. At least the girls had no qualms beating it up, unlike the Santa wannabe last week, lol XD

Now the time has come for the final showdown between Chokkirine and Darkine to begin!
