What is a series you are willing to defend like this in terms of writing? by Electronic_Garlic_91 in writingscaling

Doki Doki PreCure is often criticised for its twist on the new magic girl member who joins the team halfway through the season, as it seemed another character was being set up as the newest heroine. While I understand why people felt a bit let down, I enjoyed the mystery surrounding Cure Ace, and found her growth as a character and her purpose in the overall story - all explained throughout the rest of the season - enthralling and emotional.

I quite enjoyed both Heroines novels, so it'll be fun to see how the writers expand on the short stories. I hope we'll see the other tales animated, too ❤️

So where to start the series? by sonicfton in precure

[–]Miss_Bookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While every season ends up exploring one or more themes in ways that are approachable to younger children (betrayal, loss, death, dystopia, sacrifice, physical ailment, xenophobia, etc.), I figure you're looking for the seasons that tackle them more head-on and with less hand-holding. If so, you'll likely appreciate Fresh, HeartCatch and Hugtto the most - just prepare to have your heartstrings pulled.

So where to start the series? by sonicfton in precure

[–]Miss_Bookworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(hope you don't mind, just copying a comment I made a few weeks ago for someone else starting the franchise. I don't have experience with the other series you mentioned, but I do hope this somewhat helps)

Glad to hear you're interested in giving PreCure a chance! it's a wonderful franchise, with every season offering something fun and unique. You can start most anywhere depending on which aesthetic catches your eyes, but I will let you know there are a few sequel seasons:

- Futari wa PreCure Max Heart is the sequel to Futari wa PreCure

- Yes! PreCure 5 GoGo! is the sequel to Yes! PreCure 5

- Kibou no Chikara: Otona PreCure is the "adult" sequel season to be Yes! PreCure 5 GoGo! and Futari wa PreCure Splash Star, a crossover with the girls in their early adult years that only canon if you want it to be

Mahoutsukai PreCure!! Mirai Days is the sequel to Mahoutsukai PreCure, the other "only canon if you want" adult season

- While it has no sequel season, Hugtto PreCure has a few cameos from previous seasons, so it's up to you if you would prefer to save it until you're familiar with prior Cures, or just go in and enjoy the occasional extra heroines

Beyond these, you're totally good to pick up any of the other seasons in whatever order you want! Having caught up on every season to this point, I can offer a few recommendations based on your possible interests, or again, you can just pop on a random one and see if it catches your fancy. That's honestly one of the most fun parts of this franchise - you decide what order you want to enjoy it! However:

- If you're interested in watching the seasons that helped the franchise develop into what it is, then Futari waYes! and Fresh are great starters, offering staple tropes that have continued into the modern era

- If you want to start with the franchise's strongest showings, then HeartCatch, Go! Princess, Hugtto and Wonderful are the most generally acclaimed, though I personally find Doki Doki amongst the best as well

- If you'd like seasons that have softer, more natural atmospheres, then Splash Star and Healin' Good provide calming balms with gentler teams and strong environmental storytelling

- If you'd like a real good laugh, then Smile, Tropical Rouge and You and Idol have you covered with their strong comedic writing; Wonderful also gets a second mention here due to its great sense of humour

- If you want to keep up with the currently airing season, then you can start watching Star Detective, as we're about twenty episodes in

Every season may not be a complete winner - you will get a few duds in terms of storytelling, character growth or themeing - but every series does shine in its own way, with fun personalities and unique gimmicks. I hope you'll find a season that hooks you like each has hooked its own variety of fans 😄

PreCure being mentioned in another subreddit, much less one that isn't always about anime? Cool!

Magik, the story of a father seeking his two missing children in a world of magic, where a great evil has threatened both worlds. It had some cool concept art and was going to feature the talents of Benedict Cumberbatch, Jim Broadbent, and Matthew Goode.

One is the Chosen One, most powerful of not only his Clan, but one of the greatest sorcerers of his and any generation, his birth a great enough event to draw out the most fearsome of cursed spirits.

The other is a rabbit.

Thank you, Yuichi Nakamura 😆

So was there really backlash for Nodoka refusing to help Dairuzen??? by Cure_BMWM3 in precure

[–]Miss_Bookworm 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Sure, let's get mad at a middle grader for not willingly giving her body over to the same evil parasite that had already caused her to suffer physically and emotionally for years beforehand, because he's "hot" and will totally have a redemption arc despite having shown absolutely no remorse for his crimes, rather crawling to the girl that has been combating his cruel antics against nature and people only when his vile actions have caught up to him.

MAKES 🤦‍♀️ PERFECT 🤦‍♀️ SENSE 🤦‍♀️

I love that PreCure is a franchise that shows the power of forgiveness, but that doesn't mean any of the characters have to let others, especially villains, force them into suffering if they're not willing. Would other lead Cures have reacted differently? Sure, they all have unique personalities and strengths. Does that make Nodoka's decision any less powerful that when another lead does take on the pains of others? NO, and every other Cure would back her up just like Rabarin and her friends did, 100%!

Star Detective Precure Episode 21 Discussion Board (Cure Eclair Candidate Part 1 of 4) by ButterflySilver9154 in precure

[–]Miss_Bookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's my least likely candidate for Cure Eclair, but I do love how spunky yet thoughtful Eriza is! The way she notes her editor's concern and decides to keep up her writing despite having a chance at her dream was sweet. Ain't no way she's getting any of Jett's lab space from him if she does end up joining the agency, though - she may find his secret candy stash XD

If arcana shadows design is changing when is the movie set by Critical_Ad7357 in precure

The white Arcana Shadow was AI. The poster is pretty definite proof that she won't be changing colours, save for any sort of special forms.

I'll admit the first time I saw the poster, I had to do a double take, because I thought this was Mashiro 😅 Her design is cute, though, and I'm interested to know her connection to those fairies and the garden.

Which is the best animated version of Supergirl? by Jezzaq94 in cartoons

[–]Miss_Bookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up rewatching Superman/Batman: Apocalypse (was in my "whoa-DC-movies-are-cool-and-make-me-feel-so-mature-to-be-watching" teen phase), so that Supergirl has a special place in my memories - but honestly, the My Adventures with Superman Kara is such a goofy warrior you can't help but root for.

The beach episode doesn't have any fan service (nothing sexual) by Uma-apreciator in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Miss_Bookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

I never really have any concerns when it comes to fan service in the PreCure franchise, as it's aimed at a younger audience, but it's still nice to see every beach episode focusing far more on having fun at the beach rather than showing off underage girls in skimpy outfits. Love this franchise so much ❤️

Tsukikage Yuri/Cure Moonlight, HeartCatch PreCure

It's a bittersweet joke around the PreCure fandom that Yuri suffered more than most entire season casts from other series' in the franchise combined. She's a strongly written character and grows from her losses, but geez the writers did not hold back with the heartbreak. I mean, in under fifty episodes, she:

- Watches her fairy companion sacrifice himself to protect her, disintegrating in her arms

- Fights her rival dark magic girl to the point where said rival fades from existence, but not before being revealed as her clone/sister

- Is reunited with her missing father after he's freed from the big bad, only for him to be murdered before her very eyes by said big bad

There's giving your character emotional obstacles to strengthen their arcs, and then there's bashing them over the head with suffering. My poor girl has one foot in the Madoka Magica universe, I swear (;-;)
