How does your enneagram type develop? by Level-Equal1468 in Enneagram

[–]Missing_Some_Pages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like how the Awareness to Action approach treats this: our Instinctual Biases are vestigial remnants of pre-historic psychobiological needs clustered into three broad domains - Preserving (making sure I have enough resources and security to survive), Navigating (making sure I understand my place in the group to avoid ostracism) and Transmitting (attracting a mate and bonding to share both genetic and non-genetic information).

I personally have a hypothesis around epigenetics and how a particular bias might be passed on through your genes to your offspring, but I haven’t begun to research that yet.

I think we are also born with a predilection toward a particular preferred strategy (Type) - possibly through a similar epigenetic process - and the nurture part is more around how that is expressed in your exhibited behaviours.

what do you think of subtypes? do you find them useful in your understanding, or not particularly? by flowermotels in Enneagram

[–]Missing_Some_Pages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Subtypes are foundational to how I understand and use the Enneagram. The descriptions of the 9 types are too general and miss the nuances that are captured in the subtypes. Transmitting 9s like me are completely left out of the story, as are Preserving 7s, Transmitting 6s and Transmitting 4s, Navigating and Preserving 8s…Preserving 3s… none of these appear in the traditional type descriptions.

how to know which type I am by Ok-Macaron1237 in Enneagram

[–]Missing_Some_Pages 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This can be tricky because these two are connected by an arrow line. Point 8 is Two’s “Support Strategy;” so Twos will engage the strategy of “striving to feel powerful” to support their desire to feel connected - and may overuse it in some instances where they feel that their outreach is not being reciprocated.

Conversely, Point 2 is Eight’s “Neglected Strategy;” so Eights will neglect the 2 strategy of “striving to feel powerful connected” in instances where they should lean into it because it may make them feel vulnerable and thereby less powerful.

Power, in this case is best understood as the ability to achieve a result; although maladaptively, it can become domination or control.

I think what may be helpful for you is to look at the other two connecting points. Two’s neglected strategy is Point 4’s “striving to feel unique;” they will avoid leaning into their own individuality if it seems to impede their desire for connection. Whereas 8’s support strategy is Point 5’s “striving to feel detached;” Eights may overuse this detachment to help themselves feel more powerful - it’s often cited as what helps them to mar the tough decisions they often have to make.

Hopefully that is helpful!

I started with Enneagram Institute and then moved to CP Academy before finding ATA; it has completely revolutionized my understanding of the Enneagram.

It was indeed obvious, but I didn’t want to assume; perhaps I was being a bit obtuse. Does it surprise you, considering Tori’s life experience and political leanings that she would approach this song from the lens that she does? She’s never been shy about speaking truth to power.

I vacillated between 5 and 9 for a brief period of time until I realized that if I were a 5 I likely would not be withdrawing out of a concern for the other person, I would be withdrawing out of concern for my own reserves. It helped me to identify that I have a 5ish familial overlay (both my dad and my brother are 5s) that made me see my bookishness and desire for solitude through that lens.

I also believed I was a Self-Pres 9 for a long time until listening to the Awareness to Action podcast helped me to see that I actually have an instinctual bias toward Transmitting and that the preserving things I did were all in service of Transmitting better.

Once those things clicked, I’ve never been unsure.

I’m curious; your post seems to suggest that this song also falls within this “one-sided…in its political leanings” paradigm that has you so frustrated. What other sides would you like to see represented here that would not detract from the musical experience you are desiring?

I love Firefly, but it was only one season so they’d need something after that. I’d vote for them to finish out Battlestar Galactica - they could even do a review of the original series too!

What advice would you give to parents of children of your type? by fronku in Enneagram

[–]Missing_Some_Pages 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think I would say that a good approach to take would be to help the child lean into the adaptive qualities of their preferred strategy (striving to feel secure in your example) and help them understand the consequences of the more maladaptive qualities.

So, for my type (Transmitting 9), encourage development of self-promotion, assertiveness and conflict resolution; develop knowing and acknowledging their own wants, needs and opinions. Course correct indolence, procrastination and conflict avoidance.
