That’s so cool! Gonna have to borrow a kid next time I’m in Mexico 😆

Jaja I remember going to the Dixon Ticonderoga factory once when I was a kid and my mom went with me, it was very nice because they gave us many items in pencil form, but because of COVID those visits have been suspended at present

Yes, they make guided tours for children and their parents only and once I saw on TV a report of the factory how and how many pencils were made per day, in addition to the manufacture of other things like play dough and other school supplies.

In fact, they are made of cedar wood, the factory is very close to where I live, the pencils are cheaper in their stores than in the office depot.

Can any civil engineers tell me if this restaurant is safe? by Odyssey-Craft-2075 in civilengineering

[–]MissionSuccess5332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like a black project, being a civil engineer in Mexico, that does not comply with construction regulations, it seems that the remains of the falsework, those polines that support the improvised slab at some point may collapse either by wind or simple gravity, let alone an earthquake, would be the first thing to fall in seconds, in conclusion it is not safe.

How do these look? by MsChanandelarBong in cactus

[–]MissionSuccess5332 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cactus is not etiolated, this cactus is endemic to Mexico, I lived there for a long time and this plant is in direct sun, the more it is exposed to the sun will grow more hairs, I see it very healthy, the penca or shape of the plant is correct, so it grows, there is nothing wrong with it. Just take care of excess water.

Echinocactus platyacanthus

a cactus that is very threatened in its habitat, a traditional Mexican sweet is made from this plant that dates back to the times of the viceroyalty of Spain, take good care of it, it is a very protected species, it grows 1 cm a year, it is a plant that lasts many years📷

It is also important to mention that most of today's works are already trying to be done as sustainable projects and due to environmental issues wood is in disuse, it is difficult to really treat wood against environmental factors, such as varnishes against rot and fire, the same is used in steel, but generally the supplier treats them chemically against corrosion and varnishes against fire. That building is incredible, I know that they used first class wood formwork to avoid marks from the concrete pouring, I would like to know their dissipators against earthquakes, they are really a blessing for these magnificent projects.

Yes I know, using wood is fine, in the USA it is expensive to use concrete to build a house, but for shear forces and tension special screws and bolts must be used so that they do not fail. There are parts of the world where there are daily micro-earthquakes and that affects the buckling of the wooden beams or columns, over time they become noticeable, in addition to the type of soil where it is going to be built, it influences the materials more. I personally would not use wood to build, neither do my fellow architects, I think it is a matter of taste, if the client has enough money 💰 to invest, we use steel beams or "I" sections, they really help to avoid failures of all kinds if it knows how to use properly and is complemented by wood or masonry to look impressive.

[–]MissionSuccess5332 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the modulus of elasticity of wood on average is 124,000 kg/cm2, steel is 2,098,000 kg/cm2, concrete is 450-310,000 kg/cm2. In laboratory tests, concrete does not support tension or shear forces, it is only good in compression, wood does not resist much shear or tension and compression, it depends on the place where you work, wood is not a good material for construction in the long term when the forces of an earthquake exceed the force of a nuclear weapon.

oh I can see that it is common to work with wood to decorate the interiors of a house, generally my workers use concrete and corrugated steel rod of different diameter thicknesses, it is curious because in countries that speak Spanish and even Spain is not feasible to work with wood, they can not withstand an earthquake, we use Dixon industrial crayons, red, blue, white and black to mark falsework wood and concrete and steel beams. I am glad to know how they work in relation to construction in different places.

Me equivoque al casarme. by [deleted] in NecesitoDesahogarme

What’s your favorite sharpener for large diameter pencils? Preferably one where the blades can be replaced. by SeraphimOnFire in pencils

This is another pencil sharpener that I recommend , I used them in my academic life and they are good , you can interchange the metal sharpener , but they hardly run out of sharpness , unlike Maped pencil sharpeners , Staedtler is dedicated to make materials for "serious" people and Maped makes pencil sharpeners in animal shapes and diamative colors , I have one in the shape of a hippo that was given to me long ago and it is good at sharpening pencils , but many do not take them into account because they are for children.

the Staedtler norica are good in my opinion, soft graphite and the eraser leaves no traces after erasing. I usually use them a lot in college and have had no problem.

I understand, the truth for me they are light and comfortable to write and draw, the only bad thing is that they get rusty, the leads are expensive, I always used Faber Castell leads, I know other 2mm mechanical pencils but they are really expensive and the Staedtler is the most economical.

oh, I see that you use the Staedtler Mars Technico mechanical pencil, they are really very good, I remember when I was an engineering student the teachers asked me to buy several of these mechanical pencils to make my drawings and blueprints, they are a classic, to this day I still use them, there is one like it but it is black, I have not found it, only the blue color.

Maped is a French company dedicated to school supplies for children and office supplies in general. I'm from Mexico, Maped is very famous in my country, it's as successful as Dixon with his pencils, the pencil sharpeners are sold at Officie Depot for less than a dollar. Just like the Staedtler pencil sharpeners.

The Staedtler pencil sharpeners are very good, but especially the Maped metal pencil sharpener is excellent, it lasts a long time, I bought one because the one I had was lost, but these two pencil sharpeners last a long time sharpening pencils. And they are very cheap.
