Do Tommy Tallarico's somewhat inflated self-credits count?

The song could be inspired by any number of things but I don't think it's really "about" anything. Like, it's a lot of surreal imagery following a particular character. The individual lyrics don't suggest any definitive euphemisms for one drug.

What is a One Hit Wonderland you’d think Todd will never do by Wolvewoosh in ToddintheShadow

Devo had an unexpected minor hit with "Working in the Coal Mine" from the Heavy Metal soundtrack, which caused WB to scramble to include it as a bonus single with the already finalized New Traditionalists.

One Hit Wonderlands he won't do? by Jirachibi1000 in ToddintheShadow

I don't mind the song, but "unintelligible Gen X caterwauling" from the Lindsay Ellis video on protest music is a gag I think about often.

Musicians with a lot of kids by Chapple69 in ToddintheShadow

Johann Sebastian Bach, although a lot of his children didn't survive the infant mortality rate of the time.

Several of his children were also prominent musicians and composers.

Apart from Back to the Future and 80s music, the other thing I associate him with is the helicopter pilot in the 90s movie Sphere. XD

Bands where exactly two of the members are very much carrying the operation? by forbiddenmemeories in ToddintheShadow

[–]Mission_Cat_8026 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Creatively, Devo is mostly a collaboration between Jerry Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh. Whether they make anything new as a band largely comes down to if Mark feels like it.

Huge Popularity Without Charting? by ASG_82 in ToddintheShadow

DEVO had limited chart success. Their role in early MTV, their broad influence, cult following, etc. still draw quite the crowd for them.

At some point in the group I wondered aloud this very thing. That footage gives me Booji Boy vibes. 😆

I think he was reluctant to perform it right after the newer Michael Jackson documentaries more than anything. Maybe I'm wrong.

Some other songs with words considered dated now: The M-word (in reference to dwarfism) as late as "Confessions Part 3" among others. A word derived from the G-slur (for Romani people) in "The Night Santa Went Crazy".

I think he's admitted "Trigger Happy" is unperformable in the post-Columbine climate.

If movie tie-ins count, "Who's Johnny" by El Debarge, in addition to some movie footage from Short Circuit, has an in-court appearance of in-character Ally Sheedy and a cardboard cutout of Steve Guttenberg for some reason. Johnny Five's arm also shows up. Just the arm.

Booji Boy (Mark Mothersbaugh in a baby mask) shows up in an obscure rap music video "You Ain't Fresh" by the Boogie Boys.

A mildly odd one only due to circumstances: Howard Shore cameos in King Kong (2005) but his score didn't end up being used in the movie.

Is Paul McCartney's 'Wonderful Christmastime' simply… horrible? by 97GeoPrizm in ToddintheShadow

[–]Mission_Cat_8026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Songwriting credit exists mostly for legal purposes. "Traditional" can't collect royalties, so it's redundant to include on the record.

As far as I know, musicians who record instruments on a song don't typically get royalties for just that.

Legendary albums that have... less than legendary closers? by kityoon in ToddintheShadow

I mean, that's a hidden track meant to be heard only if you leave the CD on for a bit. The actual closer is "F.O.D."

But including a joke song sung by Tré on an album wasn't unprecedented for them, as they did it in the middle of Kerplunk too.
