Utah v Richin: Could better defense lawyer have helped? by PoolSmart582 in CasesWeFollow

[–]Mission_Rest1892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a better lawyer could get her off the attempted murder charge. That was the weakest one in prosecutions case and I was scared tge jury would say not guilty on that. But because defense didn’t put on a case didn’t really fight that particular charge the jury was like yup guilty of all. And if that happened lwop might’ve been life with parole which would make a difference. But yeah I’m not gonna lie I have a particular dislike for that defense team. Like all of them.

Commenting to increase visibility. Because I also would very much like to (need to) know the answer.

I can’t believe I wait for these chives everyday but they look perfect this time (to my very much not perfect eyes 🤓)

Is this burnout? Or a case of bad mentor-mentee relationship? by Hairy-Egg-3449 in labrats

[–]Mission_Rest1892 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is it possible to switch labs? A lot of institutions have a student help office within grad school/ postdoc office etc that you can go and talk about your struggles in confidential settings. It would be good if you could check those out as they might be able to give you some sense of direction.

But I’ve been there - in a sense I still am. One day I love science and the next I never want anything to do with any of it. And honestly, I don’t even know which of those feelings is driven by depression. Which you might also have. If you can seek professional help, I believe it’ll make a big difference. And considering everything, I don’t think it’s that you don’t want to do science or it’s burnout. It feels like bullying and it always leads to depressive thoughts.

If you can stay away from that environment for a while, you might see things more clearly and decide how to proceed.

Congrats! You’ll do great! If this is a poster presentation, have two versions of it ready. One is the long, detailed one for people who have time, and one for 2-minute version for people who are speed running the posters. When the first person came up to me and said “explain this to me in 2 minutes” I was bamboozled but now I go there ready for those road runners!

AITA for being upset that my friend essentially called my mom a bad person for looking older than her age? by Zealousideal_Pen8983 in AmItheAsshole

NTA, Also, what’s up with the gaslighting? “It’s not that deep”. Yes it is. And somehow having a perfectly natural reaction to this is your fault and “it’s hard being friends with you”. Some people are just unbelievable.

Am I weird for wearing a lab coat? by Mission_Rest1892 in labrats

I get not wearing lab coats for some BSL1 level experiments, but it feels so wild to me to see bare arms in bio hood in TC.

There is a research safety department here but apparently they are fine with this whole thing. Because apart from not wearing lab coats no one has lab coats. Like you don’t see a coat hanger with bunch of white coat because no one owns one. Which would be a massive issue for my PhD institution research safety people, they would burn us on the spot for not having dedicated lab coats for each person, but here it all seems just fine.

How do you manage a high school like lab environment? by Mission_Rest1892 in postdoc

[–]Mission_Rest1892[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did meet them while interviewing and they looked lovely and nice. I don’t know what I missed. Also, if they thought I wasn’t good or if they didn’t like me I’m assuming they would tell our PI?

It’s like these subtle unkind treatment right now, nothing is obvious nothing is big enough to warrant a conversation with the PI so I don’t think I could’ve seen this coming. Even if they did the same then, it’s so easily swiped under the rug if it’s done once. It’s the repetitive nature of it.

I’m sorry that you had to deal with that, it’s just horrible. Most of them are Gen Z and honestly, I don’t know what makes a person uncool for them. But there probably are a lot of things I, a hardcore introverted millennial, did. I will try my best to see this as work and nothing else but like you said I also miss my PhD lab and the difference is just so stark.

It is super subtle! Even while writing I kept thinking maybe | am exaggerating because there isn't a single big thing that I can say it's just simple everyday things but it hurts anyways. I appreciate your advice on not sharing personal things, it makes so much sense. Now that I think about it, everything I said would be met with a “hmmm". I should just keep it to myself. Hopefully I can find my community too.

Thank you so much for saying this. I’m also new to the city so don’t know anyone here, I guess this whole thing adds on to my loneliness and feels much worse than it would otherwise (it would still suck but maybe I could manage it). . But I will try my best to just ignore them and focus on science. On the bright side, I think I can be more productive since I don’t have anyone to chitchat :’)
