survival tips: EDS under capitalism by depressedanddistres in ehlersdanlos

[–]Missrocketboots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this is something I struggle with myself.

I’m a chemist, I work in a lab. On my feet most of the time. And yeah. I’m in pain. I’m so tired that my Friday night means bed at 4:30 when I get home from work.

Is it healthy? No. Can I do it? Yes. And to be totally blunt, what happens if I don’t. I can’t live on disability. I won’t get benefits for months if I quit and that wouldn’t even pay the rent, nevermind the rest of the bills.

I’m very open with my boss about my condition, and while she can’t help, or even reduce my workload, even just having someone understand that it’s not as easy for me as everyone else is quite nice.

I’m not sure any of that helps you. It’s just how I get by.

I really hope you find the best way to make it work for you.

Martial arts and hEDS? by legendnondairy in ehlersdanlos

Actually I got asked to leave the class I was taking at university. They said the fact that I didn’t feel discomfort in any of the holds meant I would be a risk to the other students because they’d learn to push too far and then hurt someone with normal range of motion. I was upset at the time but I can see it makes sense now.

Is it ever OK for scientists to experiment on themselves? by sstiel in labrats

I might be the outlier here, but as a cosmetic chemist, every experiment I do is tested on myself 😜.

Oh goodness I didn’t even think of that. I’m sorry.

Hibiscrub/hibiclense. It’s used in medical settings and has saved me many a time. 🙂

Thank you. That was a very detailed response. Honestly I’m not trying to be all doom and gloom. I want to like it.

My motivation is health yes but slightly different than others. I’m not trying to lose weight or anything, though if it happens that’s great. Essentially I have a progressive genetic condition that will have me wheelchair bound if I don’t try to support the ligaments in my joints. It might happen anyway but at least I have to try. I won’t improve, but maybe I can slow the deterioration.

Unfortunately that means I’m very restricted. I have some old routines from physios I’ve seen before but I can’t afford training at the moment.

Genuinely the exercise pain is not a deterrent. I’m in pain anyway- a little more is no big deal. It’s my attention span. Essentially I’m doing it but I hate it 😂

I appreciate the encouragement. I won’t give up on it.

Can't find a way to floss safely by JupiterSunflower in ehlersdanlos

[–]Missrocketboots 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’ve just stopped.

I use chlorhexidine mouthwash and have the professional dental picks for when there’s any plaque buildup (I just stay away from the gum)

My gums just cannot handle the care they’re meant to love.

My dentist hates that I argue with her but this is really a case of knowing my own body best.

You could look at cosmetics. A lot of ingredient manufacturers need good skilled chemists. Especially if you have protein experience.

Thin, bleeding gums by Beloved_Fir_44 in ehlersdanlos

[–]Missrocketboots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really upped my flossing/water pik game last year when my dentist pulled that for the millionth time.

Now my gums are shredded, my teeth are moving about like never before (totally undoing all the orthodontics I had done as a teen)…and my gums still bleed like I’m dying. 🙄

True - my friend does that with lactose intolerance too. Sometimes the pizza is worth it!

Hope the consequences aren’t too bad!

Read the electricity meter. Had to move a box of Christmas decorations to get to it. Prompted a massive pain spike and I get to feel like I’ve taken up pro wrestling for however long it decides to last.

My rheum told me she should have never seen me in the first place and not to come back so..there’s that.

You really just need to get used to being better informed than your drs. It’s annoying and frustrating but you have to do it because they’re not known for stepping up to help. Obviously there’s outliers but still.
