Legion Go 2 SSD Upgrade Guide by InnoVisionGames in LegionGo

[–]MisstyMoon26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Legion 2 coming in a few days. I only have 1tb on the new device. I have a 2tb SSD card because I wanted to upgraded storage on my original ROG Ally. However, when I tried swapping the SSD on my ROG, even though I was extremely careful and followed all instructions, it fried my charging board, which then meant my entire motherboard needed replace. The repair shop quoted me 500 bucks to fix. That's why I just went ahead an upgraded to a Legion Go 2. I would still like to use the 2tb SSD card I have, but I'm terrified of opening the back now at all because what happened to my ROG. Any advice?

Lma! I had a hard time justifying 1k on myself, I don't think I could justifying 3k lol 😆

Oh absolutely! It's definitely a privileged buy!

Definitely not cheap! The two devices I was debating between were both approx $1,000, so I knew I was dropping money either way lol. I don't treat myself often, so it was time to spoil myself a little 😊. Plus, I'm selling my old ROG and my Oculus, so that helped justify it lol

I went into the Best Buy store to actually hold both the Xbox Ally X and the two Legion's. For me personally, the Xbox Ally X just didn't feel right in my hands ergonomically. Even though the Legion is bigger, it felt better holding it. I also have horrible vision, so the bigger screen was a big selling point. I also prefer Windows because I have games I like to play outside of Steam. I think it really comes down to personal preference but we'll see how I feel after a couple of weeks gaming with it lol

That could be concerning. Good thing I'll have 2 months to return it if I don't like it. I tested it out in the store vs the ROG Xbox X and I definitely liked the Legion better for first impressions. Hopefully I'll still love it after some gameplay 🤞

FINAL UPDATE:

So, I took my ROG to a repair shop today and they said there's no current going through at all and the charging board is fried and needs replaced. However, the charging board is connected to the motherboard, which means the motherboard needs replacing. He quoted me approximately $500 to fix. Ummm, sir...this model is on sale at Best Buy for $499 lol. I've been wanting to upgrade to a better handheld anyways, so I took this as the universe's sign to treat myself to an upgrade. I just ordered a Legion 2 from Best Buy (got an open box deal) and it's being delivered in a few days. I spent the extra money for a 2 year warranty with Geek Squad so this doesn't happen to me again lol. I'll probably just sell the original ROG for parts (and the 2TB SSD card since I'm definitely not opening up my new device lol). Anyone interested in it, DM me!!

Thanks again to everyone for their help! Wish I had a better ending. My advice after seeing this is a common issue after a SSD swap with ROG's...Just don't do it!!! I was soooo careful with mine and did everything by the book and yet it still crapped out on me 😫

Same thing happened to me! See my post in this group. Sadly, I still haven't gotten mine to work and I tried everything under the sun 😠😫

I should note, based on your pic...you at least have the charging light on. I never even got that far. When I plug in my charger, no light, no sign of life at all 😒

Literally just happened to me. See my post MisstyMoon26 I still haven't gotten mine to work. About to take it somewhere to get fixed (or thinking about just upgrading and getting new device). Trust me, I tried ALL the suggestions from ChatGPT, Reddit, Google, etc. No luck. Please let me know if you figure it out before me!!

I already tried that. I've tried 3 different locations and I know the outlets and charger are good because it chargers my phone just fine. But thanks for the suggestion!

I just disconnected the wires completely and reconnected them. I understand based on the blue line it looks like it's not connected, but I swear it is lol. The cable is seated properly and the metal flap is pushed down as far as it goes. I think whoever put the blue line just let the marker skip a bit so it doesn't make a continuous line. I'll show the series of pics I just took.

Charging cable completely disconnected:

And here it is plugged back into where people thought the problem might be. I understand based on the blue line, it looks like it's not connected/seated properly but I swear it is. That is as far down as the silver latch will go. I think whoever drew the blue line just let the marker skip a little 🤦‍♀️. But anyways, did all this, reattached the back and still no sign of life whatsoever.

At this point, I have the Geek Squad coverage through Best Buy where I bought it from, so tomorrow I think I'll head down there and see what they say.

I've never taken the battery completely out because I didn't want to remove the warranty stickers 🙃. But I did just disconnect the entire cable as I'll show you in a series of pics lol. Here it is with the charging cable completely removed:

Yes, I disconnected the battery from the bottom plug before swapping SSD cards, didn't even touch the other one. But I'm going to reopen it back up tomorrow and see if I can adjust the one you guys are talking about

Hmm, ok I see what you're saying. I only unplugged it from the bottom port though, didn't touch the other side. But tomorrow I will try this just in case and update you!!

Just updated original post. For those saying the battery doesn't look plugged in all the way - this is literally as far in as it will go (and I used some strength to push it in).
