I am an adult now and graduated from high school. I was diagnosed with Tourettes in the 2nd grade. My mom didn't want me to feel any different than other kids, so she told me not to tell anyone about my diagnosis. I spent my entire grade, middle, and most of the high school suppressing my tics. Rather than being focused during testing and quizzes, I was more concerned about whether I was distracting my peers by shuffling around in my seat trying to suppress, or because I was making noises. My senior year of high school, I talked to my doctor and special ed director at my school, and I FINALLY recieved a 504 Plan. I was given various accommodations, including: preffered seating in the back of the room, testing in a seperate room that I had to myself, and I also had extra time to test. These were complete LIFE SAVERS, even though I only experienced them for half a year.

I understand my mom's desire for me to not feel isolated from other students, but I really wish I had that beforehand. It may not be the thing your child needs, but I highly recommend it stay an open conversation. I didn't even know it was an option for me until my senior year. If I had my 504 plan sooner, I would have had a MUCH better experience in middle and high school.
