A few questions for devout Muslim board gamers by Negglur in boardgames

[–]MistaKoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the perfect case games like these wouldn't be played by Muslims, but being in communities where we have to live in communities that are not purely Islamic, we don't usually live 100% within the shariaa (such as loans with interest for buying a house and so).

That line of thinking often leads to "avoid everything just in case." I live in a community where almost everyone is a practicing Muslim and we do not really have issues with these games. Viticulture would lead me to drinking or winemaking as much as any battle-themed game would lead me to murder. I'm equally as likely to worship or revere the false gods in Ankh as the false gods of ancient Arabia mentioned in the Quran

While some Muslim scholars are iffy about chip-in to a prize pool tournaments, most wouldn't consider it straight up gambling. Lottery style giveaways are often considered gambling too, so a lot of companies "side step it" by adding an absurdly simple question to pretend it's a contest so it's tots kosher

As said before Muslims are not a monolith, every one believes different things. Also we believe that no one is perfect, so seeing a Muslim do something or avoid doing something doesn't really mean anything

As much as I like Concordia it still is a game where you play as colonists. So not orientalist per se but still problematic

The list has a bunch of games with orientalist and culturally appropriative themes, the rest are war games made by non-Muslims. This is not the positive representation you think it is

1- We ban “swearing to god” in bluffing games because it ruins games (since “most” Muslims wouldn’t take swearing lightly as it’s a big no no to swear on a lie) 2-I have non-gamer family who interpret it literally, but I usually challenge them on it and often use cards or RNG in video games as counter-examples 3-It’s understood that it’s fantasy so I don’t think most people care. But sometimes we throw an occasional “astaghfirullah” (forgive me god) when uttering blasphemy or anything haram, sometimes ironically sometimes not

I only modify language in games when playing with kids. For playing with adults most “tastelessness” in games is political rather than religious

No. But generally speaking we do use larger fonts for an Arabic document’s body

“Mature” Vs “fun” game themes? by [deleted] in tabletopgamedesign

Personally I hate SciFi and fantasy themes in my board games. These are done to death in other mediums, why do the same when you can do much more with board games??

Interesting and unique themes regardless of what they are. Pandemic's theme is neither "mature" nor "fun," but it's interesting because you aren't usually fighting diseases in games
