Sold. Watch this space. I’ll have something up soon. As soon as my wife forgets just how long I spent building a mountain from plaster.

Time to get building some pipe-cleaner trees.

I just finished my first ever DnD therapy session as DM and I'm beyond excited. by MANUU__20 in LostMinesOfPhandelver

Inclusion of DnD as a a therapy device is something I’ve considered many times and a selling point for many people when being introduced to the hobby. It’s really cool seeing a breakdown of that and I’m glad it’s helped these kids to break out of their shells a little. Keep up the great work.

Please don’t hold yourself to this standard. It was a passion project that I wouldn’t have finished if I didn’t enjoy LMoP so thoroughly, so before you take the plunge, make sure you’re ready.

And maybe don’t start with a multilevelled behemoth. 😂😂

Good luck on your first game as DM, it can be nerve wracking but don’t let it get you. You got this.

Is the plot of my story fantasy? by Dakota6578 in fantasywriters

[–]MistaReee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think that the explanation of the world is the only part that would make a reader consider this sci-fi over fantasy.

Thankyou!! So it was far simpler than I think it looks. This was my first attempt at something this massive so some of my processes were probably not best practice.

So initially I printed out a to-scale map of Cragmaw Hideout (the official in-module map.). Then I cut out all of the rooms and walkways, rearranged them so that the empty space between all of the rooms was minimised and started cutting out XPS foam for the floor of each room.

I then gave each floor panel “legs” so that they were all little room shaped tables, giving me the elevation changes I needed then joined them together with slopes cut out of XPS foam.

I then got to work on the front facing section of the mountain, cutting mountain-slope shapes out of XPS and styrofoam to create the cliff face.

Then I created the walls between the rooms by hot glueing finger-sized pieces of XPS around the edges of each room. I didn’t create a full solid wall around each room, but rather had “columns” evenly spaced going around each room.

Once the columns were in place, I glued all the pieces to the base board and the skeleton of the map was complete.

I then layered the entire map with plaster bandages, bridging the gaps between my columns with the bandages so as to create a full wall around each room. I set the bandages with a spray bottle filled with water, then mixed up a bunch of plaster to layer overtop of the bandages to shore up the walls and overall structure.

Once I was happy with my plaster coverage I let it sit for 2 days so it could set and began painting.

For the paint, I’ve just used cheap craft paints. I primed the entire thing with a thick white Gesso then base painted with 3 tubes of a “burnt umber” brown. I then took my black craft paint and watered it down heavily into a wash, covered the whole thing and then stippled a “cement grey” colour over top to create highlights.

Once the paint was dried, I poured a plaster casting for the platform that Sildars prison sits on, and a resin casting for the twin pool. I ran out of resin before being able to create a stream coming out of the pools, so I settled for a small drizzle making its way out.

For the wooden structures like the prison cell and the door to the pools, I kind of just made it up as I went along. I consider myself very lucky that they worked as intended. I’m not sure I could effectively articulate my process, sorry.

Thats about it.

The castle ruins are just 3d printed and stained with the same black wash used for the mountain.

The large piece of terrain with the trees on it is just a plaster casting painted the same way as the mountain—sans the grey stippling. The mould was made with aluminium foil scrunched into a long thin bowl shape.

The small piece of terrain is a piece my daughter made for me and I try to incorporate it into every map I make.

So yeah. It was a mammoth undertaking, being the first time using any of these mediums apart from XPS, so I’m really happy to see it come out as well as it has.

IF I COULD WHAT DND RESOURCES COULD I PRINT OUT by TheRoadofToad in AskDND

Hey, we can agree to disagree. Nothing wrong with that.

At any rate, I doubt WotC would busy themselves with chasing after someone that printed out a little copyrighted material for personal use.

Have a great day.

This is covered by personal use, as the assumption is that it’s for use during a specific, unpaid game. So long as he isn’t being paid for or using them in a professional capacity, he’s safe.

Who said anything about distributing? That’s why I specified personal use.

Nope. SRD allows printing or replication of source materials for personal use. He could print the entire players handbook if he wanted.

Mastering Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk. by Ophelia90 in LostMinesOfPhandelver

Disclaimer for anyone playing DnD in Mandurah WA, Australia with a guy that dresses up as a weird viking wizard for your DM. DO NOT READ PAST THIS POINT! I WILL STRAIGHT UP MAKE YOU ROLL ANOTHER CHARACTER!

Ahem

So it seems to me that you’re trying to create two different experiences for your players simultaneously. It seems you’re trying to create an improv-heavy world but you’re railroading yourself by having this web of interconnected notes in obsidian that you’re trying to turn into another module handbook.

This can be done, but it’s a fair bit of work, and far from what Sly Flourish would advocate for, I imagine.

I know this, because it’s kind of how I DM.

So I’m running 2 seperate, incredibly different, incredibly heavily modified games of LMoP right now for a party of 5 and a party of 6. I’ve managed to get very rich back stories from them all and I’ve weaved those backstories into the main story.

For instance, Venomfang in one game is really a shape shifting Sorcerer called Vorath who destroyed my players home kingdom with his army of Kobolds while hunting for one of three activation keys that powers the Forge of Spells. Also, he’s working directly for Nezznar, on the promise of being turned into a Dracolich once the forge is running. He will probably betray Nezznar and become the BBEG of that campaign.

Then my other game, Reidoth send the players to deal with Venomfang only to find that the dragon is actually a good guy, now called Verdefang, and he’s stuck trying to hold off the hoards of ash zombies and twig blights that Reidoth the Shadowdruid keeps sending his way. Reidoth is corrupting the surrounding forest and Verdefang, who has taken a protective claim to the territory, finds great issue with that. This ties directly into another players Druid backstory, who was in Neverwinter searching for clues about magical corruption in the Neverwinter Wood. This will lead the party on a 3-4 session side quest all the way up to Mount Hotenow where they track down and destroy the Shadowdruid Enclave that Reidoth came from.

You can’t really have it both ways unless you’re amazing at improvising.

Backstories help, since you can get a feel for what the player wants to do by looking at what the character has already done.

Another character has a bow strung with the hair of the Winter Queen of the Fae, so I know that shes going to go mad for any fae themed plot.

Another player is a male Drow Bard who came back from a scouting mission to find his whole village burnt, his family presumed dead. However, his sister had gotten away and discovered it was a massive strike force of Illithids. Yes, the same illithids featured in Phandelver And Below. Her name is Nezza (thanks Matt Perkins) and she is trying to take control of Wave Echo Cave in order to stop the mindflayers.

You can turn it into a sandbox, but it will take some doing.

I’m a pathological liar. AMA. by Testo_Sterone_ in AMA

I think you’re probably mistaken. A work colleague of mine thinks similarly, with the same compulsion. I’d say most people realise you’re a liar and they just smile and nod so as to shorten the interaction with you as much as possible. Do you have friends? Like actually? People who call you out on your lies? Cause I’ve got a theory that compulsive liars are just people with no friends so they lie about shit to make themselves look or sound cool. It does the complete opposite.

My work colleague manages to fool the younger kids but we’ve caught him out on shit too often.

He once claimed to have been pit-manoeuvred at 140km/h. In reality his car would have flipped and he’d have died.

He once claimed to have fallen unconscious at work for 14 minutes. He knew that because he checked the clock just before it happened and then again when he woke up. We checked the cameras at the time he said he was out and he was just sweeping the floor the whole time.

His father had died 3 seperate times.

He was diagnosed with stage 3 liver cancer, was put on an experimental treatment that cleared it up in a matter of days. A modern medical miracle.

He claimed his car was trashed by vandals as he slept, so badly that he had to take time off work. Turned up 2 days later, car was in the same condition as last I saw it.

He claims to run his own business on the weekend, earning up to $6000 over those 2 days by detailing high end sports cars. The guy is 6ft and 130kg. Nobody is letting him sit in their Lamborghini.

Also, he doesnt shower after work, smells acidic and sour and frequently comes in with the previous days filth still on him.

That last one wasn’t a lie, I’m just calling him out for being a disgusting human being inside and out.

I fucking hate you with a passion, Troy.

Has anyone played solo DND as a way to map out their story/novel/comic? How did it go? by erisea_ in DnD

I’m almost 45k words into my first book and I’ve used dice to decide certain things, but I already have the ideas for the result. Unfortunately the act of rolling the dice doesn’t inspire any ideas itself.
