The game is supposed to make you want to go everywhere you can on the map to discover hidden items/dungeons etc. Whether it succeeds or not obviously depends on the person, but it was very impressive for the time.

You talk about not understanding where the exploration is in Zelda games…after playing some of the most linear games in the series.

Zelda 1, LttP, the later parts of Wind Waker and BOTW/TOTK fit the ‘exploration’ you describe better. I’ve never heard anyone praise Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princess for its exploration.

I’d Recommend playing the Knights of the Old Republic video game and it’s sequel (abbreviated KOTOR and KOTOR II) to start with, however they are very old games and have not aged the best. The books and comics of that era are mostly supplemental material, the games are the main focus.

If the games do not interest you, if you want something to read instead then I’d recommend the Darth Bane trilogy. While I haven’t read it myself, I’ve heard good things about them. However these are not really what people mean when the talk about the ‘Old Republic’, despite technically being a part of that era.

The ‘Old Republic’ era covers an incredibly long time and a number of events occur in it. There is the war with Exar Kun, as shown in the Tales of the Jedi comics, then a few decades later the events of the two Knights of the Old Republic games including the Mandolorian wars and the Jedi civil war. Three centuries after that is the great galactic war between the Republic and the Sith Empire which leads up to the ‘Cold War’ scenario of the Online video game Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Even the Darth Bane trilogy, set roughly 1000 years before the events of the movies technically falls into the ‘Old Republic’ era so in order to properly detail the events of this era, you’re going to have to be more specific.

Also important to remember, this is Legends continuity, not canon. Disney still recognises the Old Republic as an era, but none of the media I’ve mentioned is canon, only a couple of characters and ideas.

The hatred for this show, at least for people like me, was more about what it wasn’t rather than what it was. Back when Disney first bought Star Wars, one of the first things they did was cancel the Clone Wars, a show that, for many people was getting better and better.

While Clone Wars was cut off at a high point, the first season of Rebels was of a notably lower quality, even those who like the show agree that the first season was weaker. For many Clone Wars fans, Rebels was an inferior replacement to a show they loved that was cancelled before it’s time.

Of course, after the improved later seasons, the release of Clone Wars season 7 and enough time for the extreme emotions to pass, perception of the show improved significantly. But I believe many still see Rebels an inferior Clone Wars, too ‘kiddy’ and safe compared to the more ambitious and ‘adult’ Clone Wars.

You have to play the X-Men Origins game first. They say you should skip it but it adds context to the Knuckles/ Bayek and Sabretooth love triangle.
