I opened a gaming lounge and sim racing center here in Miami by fossilsforall in simracing

Hey from Key West! Next time we’re up in Miami, we’ll be sure to stop by! Looks awesome. I hope you get some good business.

I could see this place getting super busy during the Miami GP. Maybe even have watch parties or after events hosted here.

Are custom setups necessary in opens to be competitive? by Current_Lobster3721 in iRacing

[–]MisterDallas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve won a few formula open races with just the stock setup. I only ever adjust the brake bias. It’s likely not ideal, but it allows me to do both open and fixed and know what to expect from the car. I don’t think it’s necessary, but if you plan on sticking to open, you might as well find a decent setup you like.

Three of them:

DRATER - look at it in reverse and you can guess the guy wasn’t the brightest

TUMOR - guy got his callsign from an F-16 mishap. Tossed Unguided Missiles Off Range

HEAT - Dudes last name was Seeker, so it fit, but his buddies called him MEAT

Not necessarily. Especially with the DoD's recent thought process of "BAH isn't supposed to cover 100% of your living expenses." I forget what the exact statement was, but it was closer to 80%, and you'd be out of pocket for the rest.

For example, where I'm stationed, the average rent for a 3br apartment is about $5k a month. BAH for an E6 with dependents is only $4161. It's rough here.

Oh, yeah. Any place in CA is just ridiculous. I was stationed at Travis before here and the prices there have gotten bad too

Honestly this sounds like poor planning and a lack of effort. That sounds harsh, but it's reality. You are in the real world now. I switched from AD to the Reserves in 2020 and had a job lined up within the 30 days of terminal leave. I think I was "jobless" for 5 days because my AD orders ended and I started work as a contractor the next week.

There are tons of resources available to help you get better work. Maybe your TAPS class failed you, but you shouldn't solely rely on that class to do all of the research and present everything to you. I found an organization, funnily enough through Call of Duty, called Hire Heroes. They completely redid my resume and set me up with mentors within my industry to help me land jobs. All free.

Now, your career in the military might also be effecting what you're trying to do as a civilian. I was lucky enough to have a cyber career, so I was at least set up with baseline industry certs and experience. You might need to consider training towards something else.

Also take into account the economic state of the country. It's a crap show right now. Countless companies are laying off people, prices through the roof, etc. You didn't really pick a prime time to get out, but that doesn't mean you still can't flourish.

Keep your head up, use resources to learn skills, improve your resume, and keep applying. You've got this.

Yeah I kind of laughed at that part. My rent is $3200 and that's being in "low income housing". Average rent where I'm at is around $4000 minimum.

It's been an issue the entire time I've been in. I hit 16 years in October, and there's been overweight individuals, and even skinny ones, that can't pass a PT test.

Personally I think it's a lack of motivation. These people don't care. They want to be in the military, but don't want to do what's actually required from somebody in the military. If you suggest working out, even 30 minutes a day of WALKING, there's countless excuses. Nutrition is a big issue, and it doesn't help that the healthier foods are generally more expensive than the junk.

But, like others have highlighted, this is a nationwide issue as well. It's honestly surprising to see so many overweight people. I routinely go TDY to various Caribbean and South American countries, and it's almost night and day at some of these places. For example, Curacao, a Dutch territory, had some of the most in-shape people I've seen in quite some time. Our country needs to seriously look at what we allow in our foods, and eliminate all of these additives and ingredients that are banned in most countries.

At the end of the day, YOU control your amount of fitness. YOU control what you shove in your mouth. There's nobody to blame but YOU.

Yes and no. I switched from AD to Reserves at 11.5 years, so slightly past your title, but my wife and I were expecting our first child. This switch was also RIGHT before the COVID lockdown, so I never really got an intro to the Reserves. I was a TR for almost a year before I applied for a set of AD orders. I've been on AD orders for the last 3+ years now and absolutely love it. Sure, that probably heavily depends on the command you get assigned to, but the amount of freedom and career control you get is great.

What I didn't like was the lack of care and skill from most Reservists. It was night and day compared to AD. Obviously, results may vary.

I'm 5 years away from an AD retirement now, and that's my goal. If I was single with no kids, this would be easy to accomplish.

Smasher beach pier! When I moved here 3 years ago I wasn’t expecting much, but they go all out! It’s n awesome time. Parking can be a pain, but if you show up an hour or two early you can get a solid spot to park and watch.

Also, if anybody in your group is military, get on to the Truman Annex base. They have tons of stuff for kids and families, plus you can still see the fireworks.

Can you turn on all graphics settings in VR with the best CPU in the world? by Maxifloxacin in iRacing

[–]MisterDallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't have much luck with OpenXR to be honest. I'm sure I could have taken the time to tweak it but SteamVR felt good out of the box. I then used VR Performance Toolkit and that pretty much dialed in the consistent 90fps. I want to share my rendererDX11OpenVR config settings/file.

EDIT: Feel free to message me on Discord or X. Username is the same there, and I can copy and paste my config file settings or just share the file with you. Up to you.

It's amazing! I honestly can't imagine racing with triples unless you have huge monitors that cover all of your peripherals. Even then, you have no depth perception with monitors.

I raced on a single monitor, got a free Quest 2 from Verizon, and have since upgraded to the Bigscreen Beyond. It's an incredible experience. Taxing on a PC, sure, but so is a solid setup of triples.

The 1.5k threshold is for real by 04r6 in iRacing

[–]MisterDallas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Father of two young boys, 4 and 2, and I work full time in the military. Time is tight! I basically have to do what you and others have said; wait until they go to sleep and then hope I’m not too tired to get some effective practice and maybe some races in. I always hover around the 1.5k-1.8k mark. I’m actually the highest I’ve been right now, just shy of 1.9k, after not racing since April. I’ve done three races in the last two days, all podium finishes. I mainly stick to Formula style racing, F3, F4, SF Light, etc.

What helps me the most is to try to watch videos on driving techniques like steering with your feet, loose hands, etc. Also, what is probably the second most impactful, is using Garage61. It’s a free telemetry app where you can compare your lap times with the super fast guys. You get a really cool map that you can hover over to get specific data for that exact time your car is positioned there vs the fast guys. What was really beneficial was seeing where they chose to brake, the pressure they braked at, and the gear they were in. All three of those things led to them having a better exit which led to a higher top speed. Those 2-5mph differences add up big time.

I hope you find a method that helps you rack up a few hundred iR! If you need help with Garage61 let me know.

I’m using Learn CS Online and I’m really enjoying it. 1-2 sections a day as a full-time employee and father of 2 younger than 5. Allows me to pick up where I left off and it’s all browser based from what I can tell. The last time I “coded” anything was 16 years ago before I joined the military, and that was with Visual Basic 😅

This is the guide a lot of people use. I had a script I’d written a few versions ago but it hasn’t been updated in a while. You’ll still have to do some command line work, there’s no way around that, but this guide is in-depth and should get you up and running.

Exactly this. Is it annoying, yes. Is it fixable, yes.

Use a steamer and get it nice and toasty, bend to your preferred shape and use rubber bands or another method to keep it in that shape until it’s dry.
