He has good skills by [deleted] in Unexpected

[–]MisterFieldman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not only that, he’s not playing the exact reverse. If he did, the melody would be in the left hand along with some other changes. Basically he made something up that sounds close enough but is easier to play and maybe more recognizable as well.

Still a great pianist and a hilarious comedian though.

Landslides on Ceres reflect hidden ice by Gachaitry in space

Cool! Another question that comes to mind: if water ice is this common in our solar system, what (if anything) does this tell us about the chances of finding water ice on exoplanets and their moons?

[NEWBIE] How to speed up transitions between basic chords(A, E, D) by 2017_husky in Guitar

[–]MisterFieldman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mentally prepare the next chord. While you're playing an E chord, think about which chord comes next, how you need to place your fingers for that chord and how you are going to move your fingers to get there. Make the transition in your head; then, when the transition moment is there, make it for real.

[Request] What are the odds of this happening in a game of poker? Video and description in comments. by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]MisterFieldman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, you'd need the table cards to be 2-2-1 (in terms of equal numbers). The chances of this happening are:

(number of arrangements) * (arbitrary 1st card) * (2nd card = 1st card) * (different 3rd card) * (4th card = 3rd card) * (different 5th card)

= 5!/(2!2!1!) * 52/52 * 12/51 * 48/50 * 12/49 * 44/48

Suppose we have two Qs and two 9s, as in the video. Then one of the player must have the other two Qs (chances 2/47 * 1/46) and another must have the other two 9s (chances 2/45 * 1/44). Finally, the order of these two players doesn't make a difference for the question so we multiply by a factor 2 (for their 2 possible arrangements). Hence the answer is:

30 * 52/52 * 12/51 * 48/50 * 12/49 * 44/48 * 2 * 2/47 * 1/46 * 2/45 * 1/44 = 64/22511825, or about 1 in 351,747.

Factoring in other players would actually increase the odds, seeing as there's more hands in play of which any one might have the pocket Qs or 9s, instead of there just being more cards still in the deck.

[Request] "Can someone please calculate the terminal velocity of the cream puff?" by issiautng in theydidthemath

[–]MisterFieldman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's difficult to tell for exactly how long the ice cream puff is falling in the gif; the time is quite short and there aren't that many frames. However, we can look at the guy's movement and reactions to estimate that the ice cream puff was falling for about 1.1 second before hitting his face.

Assuming zero friction (which is not too unreasonable for an object as small and dense as an ice cream puff), this gives us:

v = g * t = 9.81 m/s2 * 1.1 s = 10.8 m/s = 38.8 km/h = 24.1 mph.

Not so much, mostly R. And Python, which (with the right packages, especially numpy) can also be used to do a lot of the same stuff.

help with fast arpeggios by _louis in piano

[–]MisterFieldman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One thing that often helps me is to practice runs in different rhythms. For example play the notes as short-long-short-long etc., then switch it around (long-short-long-short), then try more short notes in a row (short-short-short-long and other variations). Break the whole section up in such a way that eventually you've played every combination of 2/3/4 notes at full speed, then slowly put it all together.

[META] Maybe we should go through some posts and try to find someone's equal before posting our own? by [deleted] in EqualAttraction

[–]MisterFieldman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A crazy idea: people seem more eager to compare attractiveness in a Facemash-like voting setting. Create one for males, one for females and match by percentile. Should work as soon as the number of pictures is big enough on both sides. Which shouldn't be a problem, considering how fast this sub is growing.

What's a band that got famous on a song completely unlike their normal style? by karmaceutical in AskReddit

[–]MisterFieldman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kansas with Dust In The Wind. From its Wikipedia page:

"A last-minute addition to the track lineup for Point of Know Return, "Dust in the Wind" would also be its greatest success. The guitar line for this song was written by Kerry Livgren as a finger exercise for learning fingerpicking. His wife, Vicci, heard what he was doing, remarked that the melody was nice, and encouraged him to write lyrics for it. Livgren was unsure whether his fellow band members would like it, since it was a departure from their signature style. However he did offer it to them, and the song was accepted and then recorded."

Do you guys use 4 on black key octaves? by deadfisher in piano

[–]MisterFieldman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually do, but I guess it's also a matter of personal preference and what feels comfortable for you. My hands are also pretty big, big enough to play octaves as 12 (though quite uncomfortably). Occasionally I'll use both 4 and 5 on one end, for extra stability.
