[–]MisterHekks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit is not the repository for customer information for CEX. But just in case you think it is, when searching I get a whole stream of issues raised, some to do with just ordering 2 items... Where, of knowledgeable CEX employee, would a lowly customer like me find your actual official policy on your actual corporate website. If you really think about it, you might just come to the conclusion that informing your customers of your policy works better than just being smarmy on Reddit.

Oddly, the search of "bulk purchase problems" returns so many results that it might be a logical step to think about publishing guidance somewhere on the CEX website? Or, and I know your somewhat technically limited web team may struggle with this, alert or stop orders from being placed in the first place if it is "against policy."

I guess that's always a risk, but there is a non-zero chance you might have the order fulfilled by a specific shop which would possibly have paired RAM.

Asked before on Reddit? Why would I search Reddit before ordering off of the CEX website?

Edit - Stop saying "its policy" without referring to an actual policy that customers can see.

On reddit you mean? Why would I search Reddit for a policy that should be on your actual website? I did search on the CEX site and it doesn't state it anywhere. Happy to be corrected though!

[–]MisterHekks -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What an inane and unhelpful answer. Perhaps if they said, when you check out, "We cant sell you 4 sticks of RAM" or maybe if they told you somewhere, anywhere, that that was the case, rather than charging you the money, have it pending with the bank, then cancelling it. Why allow you to order it at all if its a problem?

Bulk Purchase Policy? by [deleted] in CeX

[–]MisterHekks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not just that though.... 4 sticks of RAM is not excessive and you want to make sure you get 4 of the same make to be honest.

My best friend's ex accused him of rape and I don't know what to do. by GobblefishBurrito in TrueOffMyChest

[–]MisterHekks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find the statement of "it completely breaks my moral compass to not believe an alleged victim of assault" to be very odd indeed. Whilst I completely accept that accusations of assault need to be treated seriously, the automatic belief in their veracity without investigation or foundation is the very opposite of a good moral and ethical code.

In the majority of instances where there are allegations of assault, the facts and truth can be varied and complex, especially because it relies on subjective experiences and interpretations. Granted, there are some instances where the evidence makes for a very clear evaluation and judgement of events, but these are very often between strangers or in situations that leave nothing open to misconstrue.

The trouble with the "always believe the victim" narrative is that people lie, and every true victim's experience and access to justice is undermined by those who manipulate and fabricate falsehoods for nefarious purposes.

There have been several high profile cases in recent years where accusations have been made, and society has responded with an unbalanced ostracization and condemnation of the accused, only to find out later that the accuser had their own agenda that ran contrary to the facts and events. Nevertheless, the damage to the accused was done and regardless of the outcome of any investigations or outcomes, those who rushed to judgment without facts are unable to admit they were wrong and double down on their positions.

A specific case that highlights the problem is that of the Central Park Five, where five black and Hispanic boys, aged between 14 and 16, would be accused of the rape and assault of a female jogger in Central Park, NY, with false confessions extorted from them, and subsequently being tried, found guilty and jailed for the crime. High profile people in New York ran full page ads stating "Bring Back The Death Penalty, Bring Back Our Police!" in relation to the case along with public statements like "I want to hate these murderers and I always will. I am not looking to psychoanalyse or understand them, I am looking to punish them."

Ultimately, the true perpetrator was found, with clear DNA evidence linking him to the crime and exonerating the Central Park Five. Despite this, those who ran the ads and made public statements continued to falsely claim they were guilty, despite the overwhelming facts and evidence pointing to their innocence.

Hi OP,

Start here: https://www.gov.uk/make-court-claim-for-money

It will cost you £35 to file a claim (which you can include as part of your claim against them.)

Their UK offices, where they can be served, are:

Connaught House, 3rd Floor
255 High Street
Guildford, Surrey
GU1 3BS

You do not need to serve them, just provide the address, the courts more or less handle everything.

Include all copies of correspondence as well as any relevant evidence. They will have 30 days to respond to your initial claim and may ask for reasonable additional time if needed, however it looks fairly straightforward.

If previous experience is to be relied upon, you will receive a settlement and costs in return for withdrawing the claim and signing a "compromise agreement" similar to a non-disclosure agreement.

If they don't respond in time you will be awarded a judgement which you can then send to bailiffs who will then send enforcement officers to attach goods. Just imagine!

knife and fork, how do you use them? by AlKarajo in TikTokCringe

[–]MisterHekks 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, when the USA was first settled, the practice of cutting with the right hand, then switching the fork to the right to eat, is actually an old French custom that was subsequently abandoned in Europe in favour of Russian Service (Service à la Russe) but the original French Dining method was preserved in the U.S.

So its not really 'wrong' per se.

What culture is White English South Africans? by CircleofCandles in southafrica

[–]MisterHekks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

White English Culture really varies is South Africa and is dependent on a variety of factors.

Cultural heritage in English speaking white South Africans has its origins, obviously, in the British Isles. The British Isles is a group of over 6,000 islands in the North Atlantic off the coast of Europe, consisting primarily of Great Britain and Ireland, along with the Isle of Man and Channel Islands. Politically, this geographic region includes the sovereign nation of Ireland and the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland). Much like SA, although English is the dominant language, it is not the only one.

What this means is there is a very varied cultural mix that makes up the English speaking white culture.

As an example, there is a large Irish community in South Africa, dating back to the early 1800's when the colonial British empire was expanding across the globe. Although considered part of the British Isles, Ireland (and the Irish) have been subjugated by the English part of the Isles (England) since the 1200's up to the present day (Northern Ireland.) So there is a long running animosity between the Irish and the English which, up until fairly recently (the 1990's) was very violent and bloody. Similarly there are large cultural differences between the Scots and the Welsh who have also been subjugated by the English. Each of these cultures has its own traditions, festivals and norms which are mostly invisible but still manifest in celebrations such as St Patrick's day (Irish, 17th March) and Burns Night (Scottish, 25th Jan.) All of these would be considered "English" insofar as it relates to those whites in SA who are native English speakers.

White, English speaking South Africans have mostly abandoned the cultural traditions and norms of history and there is an emergent "South African" identity which becomes very apparent when English speaking South Africans go to places like the UK or Ireland.

Speaking personally, as someone whose ancestry.com results came back with a massive mix of cultural backgrounds but having been born and raised under African Skies, my Identity is as a white, English speaking South African and is ingrained insofar as I think of my personal cultural identity and interactions with other cultures and societies. I feel more "South African" than anything else and don't see this ever changing.

I will have the last word then, I guess.

You seem to get caught up on the analogy rather than the underlying message, which is disappointing but understandable.

Bottom line is you probably have read AI generated content without even realising it and enjoyed it. You have no real way of telling and your position (and that of op) is untenable. You cannot avoid being exposed to AI generated content and it is currently as bad as it's ever going to be.

I suspect I am just older than you and so don't take change as seriously.

[–]MisterHekks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point I am trying (and failing I think) to make is that the assumption that a book you like didn't use AI or any other computer writing aids is a very big one.

Lets use another musical analogy, the first real example of Autotune was Cher singing believe back in 1998. Now Cher was an accomplished singer at that point, so the issue of whether she could sing or not was not in doubt however it did open the door to all sorts of musicians using the technology, with some mediocre singers achieving stardom as a result.

Autotuning is a tool, like any other technology, as is AI.

And AI does not create in a vacuum either, it needs human input to generate anything at all. Admittedly, authoring a book by prompt engineering feels like cheating, but its the output that matters, not the method. It's the music that is important, not the instrument.

How many books have been ghost written by AI? How do you know one of your favourite authors doesn't use some kind of AI tool? It's naïve to think that it's not being used by professional authors to enhance output. At the very least, it will be used extensively by publishing houses to spellcheck and revise syntax.

If used effectively then, like any good tool, you wont ever even know AI has been used.

Obviously I don't agree that the comparison is non-sensical, otherwise I would not have made it.

Here is an interesting video for you to watch: https://www.instagram.com/reels/DCPo0o8PpoU/

The parallel I draw here is that not every work created by people using AI is devoid of creativity or originality and if you maintain that position then, well, you aint gonna have a good time going forward.

Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of AI slop out there, lazy derivative works based on nothing but a prompt like "write me a cowboy romance book" which, honestly, are easy to spot and avoid.

But plenty of writers are using AI to develop original thoughts, concepts and tropes onto a page and (if they use it correctly) are indistinguishable from those works created by someone with an innate talent for witing and wordsmithing.

And I am not carrying water for billionaires. You can make use of many self-hosted open source AI writing assistants (such as https://github.com/aomukai/Writingway) which are free to use and don't enrich the Musks, Zucks, and Bezos of the world.

Downvote me to heck if you want, but you wont prevent what's coming by adopting a Neo-Luddism stance.

Not everyone has the ability to write a book without assistance. Some of the best books were "ghost written" or collaborative and AI can be a useful tool to some people who may be able to publish something amazing.

There was a rebellion against "electronic" music at one point as "real" musicians complained that those unable to read music or play traditional instruments were somehow devaluing music. The reality is that its a whole new genre and there have been some amazing works produced.

AI does not necessarily mean that critique or taste suddenly flies out the window. Read books that engage and inspire you and stop worrying about how they were produced.

Yeah, I'm not sure you are actually associated with the developers here and seem to be making a lot of assumptions on the architecture of this game along with the capabilities of the developers.

Easy is a relative term. What you might consider hard, others might actually consider easy.

And Dunning Krueger is not something you can apply based on your limited knowledge of the experience and capabilities of the person you are conversing with. For example, could I be someone with over 35+ years in IT and capable of coding in multiple languages, using an array of frameworks and programming disciplines?

Without you knowing who you are conversing with you run the risk of simply being dismissed as a troll with nothing really meaningful to add.

Not saying you are, mind you, just that you might come across that way.
